CAUTION
nWhen starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in the driver ’s seat. Do not depress the
accelerator while starting the engine under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
nCaution when driving
Do not touch the “ENGINE START STOP” switch while driving.
Pressing and holding the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will stop the
engine, which may lead to an unexpected accident.
NOTICE
nTo prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the “ENGINE START STOP” switch in ACCESSORY or IGNI−
TION ON mode for long periods without the engine running.
nWhen starting the engine
lDo not race a cold engine.
l
If the engine becomes difficult to start or stalls frequently, have the engine
checked immediately.

nShift position uses
*1: To improve fuel consumption and reduce noises, set the shift lever in
the “D” position for normal driving.
*2: By selecting shift ranges using “S” mode, you can control engine brak−
ing forces.
nSelecting a driving mode
The following patterns can be selected to suit current driving and
operating conditions.
Power mode
For powerful acceleration and
driving in mountainous
regions.
Normal mode
Second start mode
For starting on slippery road
surfaces, such as on snow.
Press “2nd” to return to normal
mode.

When driving
n“S” mode
When the shift range is “5” or lower, holding the shift lever toward “+” sets
the shift range to “6”.
nDownshifting restrictions warning buzzer (in the “S” mode)
To help ensure safety and driving performance, downshifting operation may
sometimes be restricted. In some circumstances, downshifting may not be
possible even when the shift lever is operated. (The warning buzzer will
sound twice.)
nWhen driving with the cruise control system
The engine brake will not operate in
the “S” mode, even when downshifting
to “5” or “4”. (P. 178)
nSecond start mode automatic deactivation
Second start mode is automatically deactivated if the engine is turned off
after driving in second start mode.
n
If the shift lever cannot be shifted from “P”
P. 478
nIf the “S” indicator does not come on even after shifting the shift lever
to “S”
This may indicate a malfunction in the automatic transmission system. Have
the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately.
(In this situation, the vehicle will operate as if the shift lever is in “D”.)
nAI SHIFT
The AI−SHIFT automatically shifts the gear to the optimal position according
to the driver performance and driving conditions.
The AI−SHIFT automatically operates when the shift lever is in the “D” posi−
tion. (Shifting the shift lever to the “S” position cancels the function.)

2−4. Using other driving systems
2
When driving
Shift the four−wheel drive control switch to “L4”, then shift to
“H4” again.
When shifting the four−wheel drive control switch, push the switch
down while turning it.
The low speed four−wheel drive indicator light will flash slowly (turns
on and off every 2 seconds).
Shift the shift lever to “P”.
Shifting to the neutral position is completed with above procedure.
The unengaged “Park” warning light will turn on when the shift lever
is shifted to the “P” position.
To return to “H4” when the vehicle is in this condition, carry out the
following procedure.
nShifting from neutral position to “H4”
Stop the vehicle completely.
Make sure the vehicle is stopped in a safe place while carrying out
the following procedure.
Set the parking brake firmly.
Turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to the IGNITION ON
mode.
Do not start the engine at this time.
Depress the brake pedal firmly.
Keep the brake pedal depressed till the end of the procedure.
Shift the shift lever to “N”.
Shift the four−wheel drive control switch to “L4”, and then shift
to “H4” again.
When shifting the four−wheel drive control switch, push the switch
down while turning it.
The low speed four−wheel drive indicator light will turn off.
Shifting to “H4” is completed when the low speed four−wheel drive
indicator light turns off.
