Explanation of the traffic lane recom-
mendations

Recommended lane 6:
From this lane it is possible to carry out
the next two driving maneuvers without
changing lanes.

Possible lane 7:
From this lane it is only possible to car-
ry out the next driving maneuver with-
out changing lanes.

Lane not recommended 8:
From this lane it is not possible to carry
out the next driving maneuver without

The color depiction of the traffic lane rec-
ommendations differs depending on
whether the display is set to day or night
design.

Route guidance
Route guidance from an off-road posi-
tion to a destination
If the vehicle location is within the area
covered by the digital map, but the map it-
self does not contain any information on
the location, the vehicle is in an off-road
position. COMAND can guide you from
such a position to a destination.
At the start of route guidance you will see
the message “Off Mapped Road”, an arrow
and the distance to the destination. The ar-
row indicates the direction of the actual
destination.
The blue marking for the route on the map
starts from the nearest road known to the
system.
As soon as the vehicle is travelling again on
a road known to the system, route guid-
ance continues in the usual manner.
Route guidance from an off-map posi-
tion to a destination
If the vehicle location is outside the area
covered by the digital map, then the vehi-
cle is in an off-map position.
COMAND can guide you from such a posi-
tion to a destination.At the start of route guidance you will see
the message “Off Map”, an arrow and the
distance to the destination. The arrow indi-
cates the direction of the actual destina-
tion.
The blue marking for the route on the map
starts from the nearest road known to the
system.
As soon as the vehicle is travelling again on
a road known to the system, route guid-
ance continues in the usual manner.
Off-road during route guidance
The actual path of the road may deviate
from the data in the digital map due to road
works.
In cases like this, the system is temporarily
not able to locate the vehicle location on
the digital map; the vehicle is thus in an off-
road position.
The display then shows the message “Off
Mapped Road”, an arrow and the distance
to the destination. The arrow indicates the
direction of the actual destination.
As soon as the vehicle location is found
again, route guidance continues in the usu-
al manner.
i During an active telephone call, the naviga-
tion announcements are suppressed.
If you missed an announcement, you can
request a current announcement at any
time.
To request current announcement:

To switch off navigation announce-
ments: Press
V during the announce-

Navigation announcements
G Warning
Navigation announcements are intended to
direct you while driving without diverting
your attention from the road and driving.
Please always use this feature instead of
consulting the map display for directions.
Consulting the symbols or map display for
directions may cause you to divert your at-
tention from driving and increase your risk
of an accident.

Route guidance
i You can have other routes calculated for the
original route guidance using the “Alternative
Route” function.
In the map display with the menu sys-
tem displayed (
page 119) select
“Route”
K “Alternative Route”.
The display is split into two halves. On
the left is the map, which displays one
or more alternative routes between the
start and the destination. The current
route is highlighted in dark blue, other
alternative routes are light blue.
The right side of the display shows in-
formation on the active alternative
route, e.g. length of the segment and
the estimated time of arrival.
To select next or previous alterna-
tive route: Select “Next” or “Previous”.
The selected route is now highlighted
in dark blue.
To return to the original route guid-
ance: Select “Back”.
To start route guidance with the se-
lected alternative route guidance:
Select “Start”.
i The route browser provides an overview of
the route. You can move along the route seg-
ment by segment using the route browser and
view information and details about the route seg-
ments.
In the map display with the menu sys-
tem displayed (
page 119) select
“Route”
K “Route Browser”.
The route browser is in the display.
The top of the display shows informa-
tion on the highlighted route segment,
e. g. the road and the segment of the
road to be driven.
The highlighted route segment is iden-
tified on the map by its white color and
red edge.
To display next or previous route
segment: Select “Next” or “Previous”.
To enlarge or reduce the map
display: Select ; or :.
To close route browser: Select
“Back”.
In the map display with the menu sys-

The destination information is given in

i When calculating the estimated time of ar-
rival, COMAND uses the time set on the CO-
MAND as its basis. For this reason, the time on
COMAND must be set correctly (
page 165).
The calculation of the estimated time of arrival
does not specifically take into consideration
whether it is summer time or standard time at
the destination. It is not taken into consideration
whether or not the destination is in a different
time zone.
The distance to the destination, the estimated
time of arrival and the estimated remaining jour-
ney time 1, 5 are not displayed until the route
calculation is complete.

Setting the display design

Select “System” K “System Settings”
K “Display”.

Select “Day Mode” or “Night Mode” or
“Automatic”.
The dotRin front of the list entry indi-
cates the current selection.
i In the “Automatic” setting, COMAND evalu-
ates the automatic vehicle light sensor and auto-
matically switches over the display design.
Setting the time
i The correct time is essential for the follow-
ing system functions to operate correctly:
Route guidance on routes with time-depen-
dent traffic routing
Calculation of estimated time of arrival
Time stamps for calls received and calls di-
aled

i The increment for setting the minutes de-
pends on the situation. It is 30 minutes if the ve-
hicle is equipped with a navigation system and if
GPS signals are being received. It is one minute
if GPS reception is not available.
i If you change the time in 30 minute steps,
previously selected settings for time zone and
switching between summer time and standard
time are lost (
page 166).
Setting time/date format

Select “System” K “System Settings”
K “Time” K “Format”.
The format list appears. The dotsRin
front of the list entries indicate the cur-
rent setting.
i The abbreviations mean:
Date format: DD - Day, MM - Month,
YY/YYYY - Year
Time format: HH - Hour, MM - Minute for
24-hour and AM/PM format

To change format setting: Rotate
ymz or slide qmr.

To confirm selection: Press n.

Switching help screen on/off

Select “System” K “System Settings”
K “Voice Control”.

Select “Help Window”.
This switches the help screen on D or
off C.
i In addition to the audible instructions, the
help screen displays other information during
the individualization process and the later voice
control mode.
Individualization function
You can use the individualization function
option to adapt the Voice control system
to your own voice and therefore improve
voice recognition. This will affect the ability
of the system to recognize the voices of
other users, and for this reason it can be
switched off (
page 168).
The individualization function comprises
two parts and lasts around 5 minutes. Dur-
ing the process you will practice a few
number sequences and voice commands.
Starting new individualization process
i You can only start the individualization func-
tion when the vehicle is stationary. First switch
off all interfering units/functions, such as radio
or navigation. After starting, the system will take
you through the training by means of audible in-
structions.

Select “System” K “System Settings”
K “Voice Control” K “Start New Indi-
vidualization”.
You will be visually and audibly prompt-
ed to confirm whether you would like
additional information.

Select “Yes” or “No”.If you select “No”, the first part of the
individualization will start. You will be
prompted to confirm that you wish to
practice numbers or voice commands.
If you select “Yes”, an information
screen will appear and you will hear in-
formation about the sequence of the in-
dividualization process. The first part of
the individualization then starts auto-
matically
or

To close display: Press n.
You will be prompted to confirm
that you wish to practice numbers
or voice commands.

General information on Bluetooth®
Bluetooth® is a technology for wireless
data communication over short distances
of up to approx. 30 feet. Using Bluetooth
®
you can exchange business cards (vCards),
for example.
Switching Bluetooth® on/off

Select “System” K “System Settings”
K “Bluetooth” K “Activate Bluetooth”.
This switches Bluetooth
® on D or
off C.
Connecting Bluetooth® devices
i In order to connect Bluetooth® devices,
Bluetooth® must be activated on the COMAND
and on the particular device. In addition, a Blue-
tooth
® device must be ‘visible’ for COMAND, so
that COMAND can find it and display it. The pro-
cedure for performing this setting is given in the
manual for the Bluetooth
® device.
The following types of devices can be con-
nected to COMAND via Bluetooth®:
Mobile phone
Portable personal computer
Laptop/PDA
You can connect a maximum of 10 devices
to COMAND.
The connection process includes search-
ing for a device and then authorizing it.
Opening the Bluetooth
® device list and
searching for a device

To open the list: Select “System” K
“System Settings”
K “Bluetooth” K
“Bluetooth Device List”.

To start search: Select “Update”.
COMAND starts searching for devices
in the reception range. After a short
time, the device list appears.
i If you open the device list again, the list of
authorized devices appears.

To cancel search: Select “Cancel”.
The device list may contain the following
devices:
All (available) devices found, regardless
of whether they have been authorized
or not.
All authorized devices, regardless of
whether they have been found (are
available) or not.When first entering the device list and be-
fore running an update, the black
dotRindicates the active phone (found
and authorized).
After running an update:
Phone icons 3 indicate if a phone is found
(black) or not (grey).
The check marks 1 indicate if a phone
has been authorized (black) or not (grey).
If a phone is not in the vehicle but has been
authorized previously, the phone symbol
and the check mark are grey 2.

Tele Aid*
The Tele Aid* system
(Tele Aid – Telematic Alarm Identification
on Demand)
The Tele Aid* system consists of three
types of response:
automatic and manual emergency
Roadside Assistance
Information
Automatically
An emergency call is initiated automatical-
ly following an accident in which the emer-
gency tensioning devices (ETDs) or air
bags deploy.
Initiating an emergency call manually
The SOS button is located in the overhead
control panel.

Briefly press SOS button cover to open.

Press SOS button (for longer than
2 seconds).
The indicator lamp in the SOS button
will flash until the emergency call is
concluded.

Wait for a voice connection to the Re-
sponse Center.

Close cover after the emergency call is
concluded.
i During the emergency call message “Emer-
gency Call Activated” is displayed, operation
from COMAND is not possible.
