ENGINE STARTING
EMERGENCY START-UP
If the Lancia CODE cannot deactivate the engine
immobilising system, the
YandUwarning lights
stay on and the engine will not start.
To start the engine the emergency start-up can be
performed.
Read the whole procedure carefully before trying to
carry it out. If you make a mistake, you must turn
the ignition key back to STOP and repeat the whole
operation from beginning.
Proceed as follows:
❒Read the 5-figure electronic code given on the
CODE card;
❒Turn the ignition key to MAR;
❒Press and hold down the accelerator pedal. The
instrument panel warning light
Uwill come on
for about 8 seconds and then go out;
❒Release the accelerator pedal and get ready to
count the flashes of the
Uwarning light;
❒Count the number of flashes that corresponds to
the first figure of the code on the CODE card,
then press the accelerator pedal and keep it there
until the
Uwarning light comes on for four
seconds and then goes out; release the
accelerator pedal;
❒TheUwarning light will start flashing again:
after it has flashed the number of times that
corresponds to the second figure on the CODE
card, press the accelerator pedal to the floor and
keep it there;
❒Do the same for the remaining figures on the
CODE card;
❒Once the final figure has been entered, keep the
accelerator pedal pressed. The
Uwarning light
will light up for four seconds and then go out;
release the accelerator pedal;
❒Rapid flashing of the warning light U(for
about 4 seconds) confirms the operation has
been carried out successfully;
❒Start the engine by turning the ignition key from
MAR to AVV.
If however the warning light
Ustays on, turn the
ignition key to STOP and repeat the procedure from
step one
IMPORTANT After an emergency start-up, you
should contact a Lancia Dealership otherwise you
will have to repeat the procedure described each
time you want to start the engine.

JUMP STARTING
If the battery is flat, it is possible to start the engine using an
auxiliary battery with the same capacity or a little higher than the flat
one.
Proceed as follows:
❒Connect positive terminals (+) of the two batteries with a jump
lead;
❒With a second lead, connect the negative terminal (–) of the
auxiliary battery and to an earthing point Eon the engine or the
gearbox of the car to be started;
❒Start the engine;
❒When the engine has been started, remove the leads reversing the
order above.
If after a few attempts the engine does not start, do not insist but
contact the nearest Lancia Dealership.
IMPORTANT Do not directly connect the two negative terminals:
sparks could ignite the flammable gas from the battery. If the other
battery is fitted in a vehicle, prevent accidental contacts between the
metal parts of the two vehicles.
Under no circumstances should a battery charger be used to start the engine: it could damage the
electronic systems and in particular the ignition and injection control units.
WARNING
Do not carry out this procedure if you lack experience; if it is not done correctly it
can cause very intense electrical discharges. In addition, the fluid contained in the
battery is poisonous and corrosive. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. You are also
advised not to put naked flames or lighted cigarettes near the battery and not to
cause sparks.

IF A FUSE BLOWS
GENERAL
The fuse is a protective device for the electric system: it comes into
action (i.e. it cuts off) mainly due to a fault or improper action on the
system.
If an electric device is not working, check the efficiency of its fuse.
The conductor element A must be intact; if not, replace the fuse with
one of the same amp rating (same colour).
B: Undamaged fuse
C: Fuse with broken filament.
Remove the blown fuse using the pincer D provided in the control box
on the dashboard.
Never replace a broken fuse with anything other than a new fuse.
WARNING
WARNING
If a general fuse (MEGA-FUSE, MIDI-FUSE, MAXI-FUSE) cuts in, do not
attempt any repair and contact Lancia Dealership. Before changing a fuse, check
the ignition key has been removed and that all the other electric devices have been
turned off/disabled.
If the fuse blows again, have the car inspected at Lancia Dealership.
WARNINGNever change a fuse with another with a higher amp rating, DANGER OF FIRE.

WARNING
Do not start the engine when towing the car.
WARNING
While the car is being towed with the
engine off, remember that the brake pedal
and steering will require more effort as
you no longer have the benefit of the brake
booster and the electrical power steering.
Do not use flexible cables to tow. Avoid
jerking. Whilst towing, ensure that the
coupling to the car does not damage the
surrounding components. When towing the
car, you must comply with the specific
traffic regulations regarding the tow hitch
and how to tow on the road. TOW RING HOOKING
Proceed as follows:
❒take the tow ring B from its support;
❒tighten the ring on the rear or front threaded pin.
Before starting to tow, turn the ignition
key to MAR and then to STOP. Do not
remove the key. If the key is removed, the
steering lock engages automatically which
prevents the wheels being turned.

IMPORTANT - Battery
The charge in the battery should be checked at the
start of winter to limit the risk of electrolyte
freezing.This check should be carried out more frequently if
the car is used mainly for short trips, or if it is fitted
with accessories that permanently absorb electricity
even with the ignition key removed, especially in the
case of after market accessories. If the car is used in
hot climates or particularly harsh conditions it is
wise to check the level of the battery fluid
(electrolyte) more frequently than specified in the
“Service schedule” in this section.

MAINTENANCE
Car maintenance should be entrusted to Lancia Dealership. For routine and minor maintenance
operations you wish to carry out yourself, always make sure you have the proper equipment,
genuine Lancia spare parts and the necessary fluids; do not however carry out these operations if
you have no experience.

In fact, since these devices continue absorbing
energy even when the ignition key is off, they
gradually run down the battery.The total intake of these systems (factory and after-
market) must be less than 0.6 mA x Ah (of the
battery) as shown in the following table:

Windows
Use specific window cleaner products. Use also
clean cloths to avoid scratching the glass or
damaging the transparency.
IMPORTANT The inside of the rearscreen should be
wiped gently with a cloth in the direction of the
filaments to avoid damaging the heating device.
Front headlights
IMPORTANT Never use aromatic substances (e.g.:
petrol) or ketones (e.g.: acetone) for cleaning front
headlight plastic lens.Engine compartment
At the end of the winter the engine compartment
should be carefully washed, without directing the jet
against electronic control units. Contact a
specialised workshop to have this done.
IMPORTANT Washing should be carried out with
the engine cold and the ignition key at STOP. After
washing make sure that the various protections
(e.g.: rubber caps and various covers) have not been
damaged or removed.
Never use flammable products like oil ether or rectified petrol for cleaning car
interiors. Electrostatic discharges generated by rubbing during cleaning
operations could cause fire.
