6CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL
G030A01A-AAT Engine oil is essential to the perfor-
mance and service of the engine. It is suggested that you check the oil levelat least once a week in normal use and more often if you are on a trip or driving in severe conditions.MAINTENANCE PRECAU- TIONS
!
G020D01TG-GAT Improper or incomplete service may
result in problems. This section gives instructions only for the maintenanceitems that are easy to perform.
Several procedures should be done by
an authorized Hyundai dealer.
NOTE: Improper owner maintenance dur-
ing the warranty period may affect warranty coverage. WARNING:
o Performing maintenance work on a vehicle can be dangerous. You can be seriously injured while performing some maintenance procedures. If you lack sufficientknowledge and experience or the proper tools and equipment to do the work, have it done by anauthorized Hyundai dealer.
o Working under the hood with the engine running is dangerous. It becomes even more dangerous when you wear jewelry or looseclothing. These can become en- tangled in moving parts and re- sult in injury. Therefore, if youmust run the engine while work- ing under the hood, make certain that you remove all jewelry (espe-cially rings, bracelets, watches, and necklaces) and all neckties, scarves, and similar loose cloth-ing before getting near the en- gine or cooling fans.

Recommended Oil 1. Gasoline Engine
(1) Select engine oil of the proper
SAE viscosity number according to the atmospheric temperature. Recommended viscosity is given in the following illustration.
(2) The engine oil quality should meet the following classification.
API SJ, SL or ABOVE, ILSAC GF-3 or ABOVE NOTE:
o For good fuel economy, SAE 5W-20 (5W-30), ILSAC GF-3 en- gine oil is preferred regardless of regional option and engine variation.
o If SAE 5W-20, ILSAC GF-3 en- gine oil is not available, second-ary recommended engine oil forcorresponding temperature range can be used.

NOTE: For diesel-powered vehicle SAE 0W- 30 oil should be used only in areaswhere extremely cold temperatures of 10°C(50°F) or below are experi- enced.
(2) The engine oil quality should meet
the following API classification:Diesel Engine (2.5 TCI) : CF-4 or ABOVE Diesel Engine (2.9 CRDi) : CF-4 or ABOVE
(3) The engine oil quality should meet the following ACEA classification :

To Check the Oil Level
Before checking the oil, warm up theengine to the normal operating tem- perature and be sure your car is parked on level ground. Turn the en-gine off. NOTE: Before checking or adding the en- gine oil, remove the cover abovethe engine oil filler cap and the engine oil level dipstick with a blade screwdriver inserted in thenotch (2.5 TCI only). Wait ten minutes, then remove the dipstick, wipe it off, fully reinsert thedipstick and withdraw it again. Then note the highest level the oil has reached on the dipstick. It should bebetween the upper ("F") and lower ("L") range. G030D02HP-GAT

!WARNING:
Be very careful not to touch the
radiator hose when checking the engine oil as it may be hot enoughto burn you.
If the oil level is close to or below the "L" mark, add oil until it reaches the "F" mark. To add oil:
1. Remove the oil filler cap by turning
it counterclockwise.
2. Add oil, then check the level again.
Do not overfill.
3. Replace the cap by turning it clock-
wise.
The distance between the "F" and "L" marks is equal to about 1 liter (Gaso- line Engine/Diesel Engine (2.5 TCI))/ 1.4 liters (Diesel Engine (2.9 CRDi))of oil. HHP5003

10CHECKING AND CHANGING THE ENGINE COOLANT
!
G050A01A-AAT
WARNING:
Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. When the engine is hot, the engine coolant is underpressure and may erupt through the opening if the cap is removed. You could be seriously burned if you donot observe this precaution. Do not remove the radiator cap until the radiator is cool to touch.
G350A01A-GAT ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION Function of Engine Oil Engine oil has the primary function of lubricating and cooling the inside of the engine. Engine oil consumption
It is normal that an engine should
consume some engine oil while nor- mal driving. The cause of oil con-sumption in a normal engine are as follows;
o Engine oil is used to lubricate pis-
tons, piston rings and cylinders. A thin film of oil is left on thecylinder wall when a piston movesdownwards in the cylinder. High negative pressure generated dur- ing engine operation sucks someof the oil into the combustion cham- ber. This oil with some oil of the cylin- der wall is burned by the high tem- perature combustion gases duringthe combustion process.
o The engine oil consumption is strongly effected by the viscosityand quality of oil, engine rpm and driving condition etc. The engine oil is more consumed under severedriving conditions such as high speeds and frequent acceleration and deceleration than normal driv-ing condition.
!
! CAUTION:
Slowly pour the recommended oil using by a funnel. Do not overfillnot to damage engine.
WARNING:
Be very careful not to touch the radiator hose when adding the en- gine oil as it may be hot enough toburn you.

14WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADES
!
G080A02A-AAT The wiper blades should be carefully inspected from time to time and cleaned to remove accumulations ofroad film or other debris. To clean the wiper blades and arms, use a clean sponge or cloth with a mild soap ordetergent and water. If the wipers continue to streak or smear the glass, replace them with genuine Hyundaireplacement parts or their equivalent. CAUTION:
o Do not operate the wipers on dry glass. This can result in morerapid wear of the wiper blades and may scratch the glass.
o Keep the blade rubber out of contact with petroleum productssuch as engine oil, gasoline, etc. G080B01HR-GAT
Replacing the Wiper Blades
To replace the wiper blades, raise the
wiper to the vertical. To remove the wiper blade
1. Push down the wiper blade with the locking clip (1) pressed to detach it from the wiper arm.
