CHECKING THE BATTERY

WARNING:
Batteries can be dangerous! When working with batteries, carefully observe the following precautionsto avoid serious injuries. The fluid in the battery contains a
strong solution of sulfuric acid, which is poisonous and highly corrosive. Becareful not to spill it on yourself or the car. If you do spill battery fluid on yourself, immediately do the follow-ing: o If battery fluid is on your skin, flush
the affected areas with water for atleast 15 minutes and then seek medical assistance.
o If battery fluid is in your eyes, rinse out your eyes with water and getmedical assistance as soon as possible. While you are being drivento get medical assistance, continue to rinse your eyes by using a sponge or soft cloth saturated withwater.
o If you swallow battery fluid, drink a large quantity of water or milk fol- lowed by milk of magnesia, eat a raw egg or drink vegetable oil. Getmedical assistance as soon as possible.
While batteries are being charged(either by a battery charger or by the vehicle’s alternator), they produceexplosive gases. Always observe these warnings to prevent injuries from occurring:
o Charge batteries only in a well ven- tilated area.
o Do not permit flames, sparks or smoking in the area.
o Keep children away from the area. I090C01P-GAT Disconnection and connection Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running; doing so could damage the vehicle’s electrical com- ponents. First disconnect the nega-tive terminal and then the positive terminal. When connecting the bat- tery, first connect the positive termi-nal and then the negative terminal.
CAUTION:
o Keep the terminals clean. After the battery is connected, applyterminal protection grease. Toclean the terminals, use luke- warm water.
o Never short-circuit the battery; doing so could cause it to over- heat and be damaged.
o Do not smoke or bring an open flame near the battery; doing socould ignite the explosive gasgenerated by the battery.

o The battery electrolyte is extremelycaustic. Do not allow it to come in contact with your eyes, skin,clothing, or the painted surfaces of the vehicle. Spilled electrolyte should be flushed immediately with ample amounts of water. Irritation to eyes or skin from contact withelectrolyte requires immediate medical attention.
o If the battery is to be quick- charged, first disconnect the battery cables.
o In order to prevent a short cir- cuit, be sure to disconnect thenegative (-) terminal before do- ing anything else.
If any electrolyte gets into your eyes, flush your eyeswith clean water for at least 15 minutes and get imme- diate medical attention. Ifpossible, continue to apply water with a sponge or cloth until medical atten-tion is received.If electrolyte gets on yourskin, thoroughly wash the contacted area. If you feel a pain or a burn- ing sensation, get medical attention immediately. Wear eye protection when charging or working near a battery. Always provide ventilation when working in an en- closed space.
o When lifting a plastic-cased bat-
tery, excessive pressure on thecase may cause battery acid to leak, resulting in personal injury. Lift with a battery carrier or withyour hands on opposite corners.
o Never attempt to charge the bat-

Checking the Battery
Keep the battery clean. Any evidence
of corrosion around the battery posts or terminals should be removed using a solution of household baking sodaand warm water. After the battery ter- minals are dry, cover them with a light coating of grease.
!WARNING:
Always read the following instructions carefully when handling a battery. Keep lighted cigarettes and all other flames or sparks away from the battery. Hydrogen, which is a highly combustible gas, is always present in battery cells andmay explode if ignited.Keep batteries out of thereach of children because batteries contain highly cor- rosive SULFURIC ACID. Donot allow battery acid to contact your skin, eyes, clothing or paint finish.

G140A01A-AAT Keeping the Condenser Clean The air conditioning condenser (and engine radiator) should be checked periodically for accumulation of dirt, dead insects, leaves, etc. These caninterfere with maximum cooling effi- ciency. When removing such accu- mulations, brush or hose them awaycarefully to avoid bending the cooling fans.
G140B01A-AAT Checking the Air Conditioning Operation
1. Start the engine and let it run at a fast idle for several minutes with the air conditioning set at the maxi-mum cold setting.
2. If the air coming out of the in-dash
vents is not cold, have the air con-ditioning system inspected by your Hyundai dealer. G140C01A-AAT Lubrication To lubricate the compressor and the seals in the system, the air condition- ing should be run for at least 10 minutes each week. This is particu-larly important during cool weather when the air conditioning system is not otherwise in use.CAUTION:
Running the air conditioning sys- tem for extended periods of time with a low refrigerant level maydamage the compressor.

o The electrical ignition system
works with high voltage. Never touch these componentswith the engine running or the ignition switched on.

G140D01HP-GAT Checking the Compressor Drive Belt When the air conditioning is being used regularly, the compressor drivebelt tension should be checked at least once a month. To check the drive belt tension, press down on the belt halfway between the engine crankshaft and compressorpulleys. Pressing with your finger, you should not be able to deflect this belt anymore than 8.0 mm. If you havethe instruments to check it with a force of 98N (22 lb.), the deflection should be approx. 8.0 mm (0.315 in.).If the belt is too loose, have it ad- justed by your Hyundai dealer. NOTE: The compressor drive belt tension for diesel engine (2.5 CRDi only) isadjusted automatically.

17CHECKING THE BRAKE FLUID
I100A02P-GAT Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir. The brake fluid level must be be- tween the "MAX" and "MIN" marks on the reservoir. The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the brake pads but it does not indicate any abnormality. If the brake fluid level falls markedly in a short time, it indicates leaks from the brake system. In such a case,have your vehicle checked by an au- thorized HYUNDAI dealer. Use SAE J1703 (or DOT3 or DOT 4) or equivalent type brake fluid.
CAUTION:
Be sure to install the climate control air filter in the direction of the arrow sign. Otherwise, it may cause noise or deterioration.

On a vehicle with the brake fluid warn- ing lamp, the brake fluid level is moni-tored by a float. When the brake fluid level falls to below the "MIN" mark, the brake fluid warning lamp lights up.
WARNING:
o Use only the specified brake fluid. Also, the additives in differentbrands may result in a chemical reaction when mixed together, so avoid mixing different brands ifpossible.
o Use extreme caution in filling
the brake fluid because it is toxicand corrosive, and it can harm your eyes and damage painted surface. If the fluid gets in youreyes, flush your eyes with clean water.
CHECKING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
I120A02P-GAT (If installed) Transmission fluid in the automatic transmission should be changed at those intervals specified in the ve- hicle maintenance schedule in Sec-tion 6. NOTE: Automatic transmission fluid is a red color. As driving distance in- creases, the fluid color turns dark-ish red gradually. It is a normal condition and you should not judge the need to replace basedupon the changing color.You must replace the automatictransmission fluid in accordance with intervals specified in the ve- hicle maintenance schedule in sec-tion 6.CHECKING THE CLUTCH FLUID

3. Confirm if the fluid level is in the
“HOT” range on the level gauge. If the fluid level is lower, add thespecified fluid from the fill hole. If the fluid level is higher, drain the fluid from the drain hole.
4. If the fluid level is checked in cold condition[fluid temperature 20~30°C(68~86°F)], add the fluid to the “COLD” line and then recheck the fluid level according to the abovestep 2. Full mark

To Check the transmission Fluid Level
The automatic transaxle fluid level
should be checked regularly.
Keep the vehicle on level ground with
the parking brake applied and check the fluid level according to the follow- ing procedure.
1. Place the shift lever in N(neutral) position and confirm the engine is running at normal idle speed.
2. After the transaxle is warmed up sufficiently [fluid temperature70~80°C (158~176°F)], for example by 10 minutes usual driving, movethe shift lever through all positions then place the shift lever in N(neutral) or P(park) position. D060A01P

The cooling fan is controlled by engine coolant temperature and may sometimes operate even when theengine is not running. Use extreme caution when working near the blades of the cooling fan, so thatyou are not injured by a rotating fan blade. As the engine coolant tem- perature decreases, the fan will au-tomatically shut off. This is a nor- mal condition.
FILLING THE WASHER RESERVOIR
I130A02P-GAT The washer fluid reservoir supplies
fluid to the windshield washer sys- tem.
A good quality washer fluid should be
used to fill the washer reservoir. Thefluid level should be checked more frequently during bad weather or whenever the washer system is inmore frequent use.
!WARNING (Diesel only):
Never work on injection system with engine running or within 30 sec- onds after shutting off engine. Highpressure pump, rail, injectors and high pressure pipes are subject to high pressure even after the enginestopped. The fuel jet produced by fuel leaks may cause serious injury, if it touch the body. People usingpacemakers should not move than 30cm closer to the ECU or wiring harness within the engine roomwhile engine is running, since the high currents in the Common Rail system produce considerable mag-netic fields.
