!WARNING:
ABS (ESP) will not prevent accidents due to improper or dangerous driv- ing maneuvers. Even though vehiclecontrol is improved during emer- gency braking, always maintain a safe distance between you and ob-jects ahead. Vehicle speeds should always be reduced during extreme road conditions. The braking distance for cars equipped with an anti-lock braking system (Electronic Stability Program)may be longer than for those without it in the following road conditions. During these conditions, the ve-hicle should be driven at reduced speeds.
o Rough, gravel or snow-covered roads.
o With tire chains installed.
o On roads where the road surface
is pitted or has different surface height. The safety features of an ABS (ESP) equipped vehicle should not be testedby high speed driving or cornering. This could endanger the safety of yourself or others.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM
C120A01FC-GAT (If Installed) The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is designed to prevent wheel lock-upduring sudden braking or on hazard- ous road surfaces. The ABS control module monitors the wheel speed andcontrols the pressure applied to each brake. Thus, in emergency situations or on slick roads, ABS will increasevehicle control during braking. NOTE:
o A click sound may be heard in the engine compartment when the ve- hicle begins to move after the en- gine is started. These conditionsare normal and indicate that the anti-lock brake system (Electronic Stability Program) is functioningproperly.
o During ABS (ESP) operation, a
slight pulsation may be felt in thebrake pedal when the brakes are applied. Also, a noise may be heard in the engine compartment whilebraking. These conditions are normal and indicate that the anti- lock brake system (Electronic Sta-bility Program) is functioning prop- erly.

C310D01JM-AAT Indicators and Warning The indicators should illuminate when the ignition key is turned to ON orSTART but should go out after three seconds. If the indicators do not illuminate, or theESP or ESP-OFF indicator does not go out after 3 seconds, have the vehicle checked by an authorized dealer. Should there be any unusual conditions in the device while driving, ESP-OFFindicator illuminates as a warning. If ESP-OFF indicator illuminates, pull your car to a safe place and stop theengine. Then, start the engine again to check if the ESP-OFF indicator goes out. If the indicator remains lit even after the engine has been started, have your carchecked by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
BACK WARNING SYSTEM
C400A02P-GAT (If Installed) The back warning system assists the driver during backward movement ofthe vehicle by chiming if any object is sensed within a distance of 120 cm (47 in.) behind the vehicle. This system isa supplemental system and it is not intended to nor does it replace the need for extreme care and attention of thedriver. The sensing range and objects detectable by the back sensors are limited. Whenever backing-up, pay asmuch attention to what is behind you as you would in a vehicle without a back warning system. WARNING:
The Back Warning System is a supple-mentary function only. The opera-tion of the Back Warning System can be affected by several factors (in- cluding environmental conditions).It is the responsibility of the driver to always check the area behind the vehicle before backing up.
Sensor Operation of the back warning system Operating condition
o This system will activate when back-ing up with the ignition key ON.If the vehicle is moving at a speedover 5 km/h (3 mph), the system may not be activated correctly.
o The sensing distance while the Back
Warning System is in operation isapproximately 120 cm (47 in.).
o When more than two objects are
sensed at the same time, the closestone will be recognized first.

o Don't coast down hills with the carout of gear. This is extremely haz- ardous. Keep the car in gear at all times, use the brakes to slow down, then shift to a lower gear so thatengine braking will help you main- tain a safe speed.
o Don't "ride" the brake pedal. Rest- ing your foot on the brake pedalwhile driving can be dangerous be- cause it can result in the brakesoverheating and losing their effec- tiveness. It also increases the wear of the brake components.
o If a tire goes flat while you are driving, apply the brakes gently and
keep the car pointed straight aheadwhile you slow down. When you are moving slowly enough for it to be safe to do so, pull off the road andstop in a safe place.
o If your car is equipped with an auto-
matic transaxle, don't let your carcreep forward. To avoid creeping forward, keep your foot firmly on the
brake pedal when the car is stopped.
o Use caution when parking on a hill. Engage the parking brake and placethe gear selector lever in "P" (auto-matic transaxle) or in first or reverse gear (manual transaxle). If your caris facing downhill, turn the frontwheels into the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If your car is facing
uphill, turn the front wheels awayfrom the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If there is no curb or if it is requiredby other conditions to keep the car from rolling, block the wheels.
o Under some conditions your park- ing brake can freeze in the engagedposition. This is most likely to hap- pen when there is an accumulationof snow or ice around or near the rear brakes or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the parkingbrake may freeze, apply it only tem- porarily while you put the gear se- lector lever in "P" (automatic) or infirst or reverse gear (manual transaxle) and block the rear wheels so the car cannot roll. Then releasethe parking brake.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up-
grade with the accelerator pedal.This can cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or parking brake.DRIVING FOR ECONOMY
C140A01A-GAT You can save fuel and get more kilo- meters from your car if you follow these suggestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate. Don't make "jack- rabbit" starts or full-throttle shiftsand maintain a steady cruising speed. Don't race between stop- lights. Try to adjust your speed tothat of the other traffic so you don't have to change speeds unneces- sarily. Avoid heavy traffic wheneverpossible. Always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles so you can avoidunnecessary braking. This also re- duces brake wear.
o Drive at a moderate speed. The faster you drive, the more fuel yourcar uses. Driving at a moderate speed, especially on the highway, isone of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.

o Don't "lug" or "over-rev" the engine. Lugging is driving too slowly in too high a gear resulting in the engine bucking. If this happens, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving is racingthe engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting at the recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is oper-ated by engine power so your fueleconomy is reduced when you use it.
more frequent maintenance is re- quired (see Section 5 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your Hyundai should bekept clean and free of corrosivematerials. It is especially important that mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be al- lowed to accumulate on the under-side of the car. This extra weight can result in increased fuel con- sumption and also contribute to cor-rosion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces-
sary weight in your car. Weight re-duces fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than
necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engine and restart only when you're ready to go.
o Remember, your Hyundai does not require extended warm-up. As soonas the engine is running smoothly,you can drive away. In very cold weather, however, give your engine a slightly longer warm-up period.
o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal.
This can increase fuel consumptionand also increase wear on these components. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedalmay cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious con-sequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them
inflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect inflation, either too much or too little, results in unnec- essary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned
correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tire wearand may also result in other prob- lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain yourcar in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 5. If you drive your car in severe conditions,

13. Avoid holding the brake pedal downtoo long or too frequently. This could cause the brakes to over- heat, resulting in reduced braking efficiency.
14. When going down a hill, shift into a lower gear and use the engine brak-ing effect.When ascending a long grade, downshift the transaxle to a lower gear and reduce speed to reducechances of engine overloading and/ or overheating.
15. If you have to stop while going uphill, do not hold the vehicle inplace by pressing on the accelera- tor. This can cause the automatictransaxle to overheat. Use the park- ing brake or footbrake.
NOTE: When towing check transaxle fluid more frequently.
When being passed by a large ve-hicle, keep a constant speed andsteer straight ahead. If there is too much wind buffeting, slow down to get out of the other vehicle's airturbulence.
8. When parking your car and trailer,
especially on a hill, be sure to fol-low all the normal precautions. Turn your front wheel into the curb, set the parking brake firmly, and putthe transaxle in 1st or Reverse (manual) or Park (automatic). In addition, place wheel chocks ateach of the trailer's tires.
9. If the trailer has electric brakes,
start your vehicle and trailer mov-ing, and then apply the trailer brake controller by hand to be sure the brakes are working. This lets youcheck your electrical connection at the same time.
10. During your trip, check occasion- ally to be sure that the load issecure, and that the lights and any trailer brakes are still working.
11. Avoid jerky starts, sudden accel- eration or sudden stops.
12. Avoid sharp turns and rapid lane changes. CAUTION:
If overheating should occur whentowing, (temperature gauge readsnear red zone), taking the following action may reduce or eliminate the problem.

1. Turn off the air conditioner.
2. Reduce highway speed.
3. Select a lower gear when going uphill.
4. While in stop and go traffic, place the gear selector in park or neu- tral and idle the engine at a higherspeed.

D010B02A-AAT If Engine Doesn't Turn Over or Turns Over Slowly
1. If your car has an automatic
transaxle, be sure the gear selector lever is in "N" or "P" and the emer-gency brake is set.
2. Check the battery connections to be
sure they are clean and tight.
3. Turn on the interior light. If the light dims or goes out when you operatethe starter, the battery is discharged.
4. Check the starter connections to be sure they are securely tightened.
5. Do not push or pull the vehicle to start it. See instructions for "Jump Starting on the following pages". D010C02A-AAT If Engine Turns Over Normally but Does Not Start 1. Check fuel level. 2. With the key in the "OFF" position,
check all connectors at ignition coils and spark plugs(For Gasoline En- gine) or check all connectors atglow plug and glow plug relay(For Diesel Engine). Reconnect any that may be disconnected or loose.
3. Check fuel line in the engine room. 4. If engine still refuses to start, call a
Hyundai dealer or seek other quali- fied assistance.

1. Reduce your speed gradually, keep- ing a straight line. Move cautiously off the road to a safe place.
2. Turn on your emergency flashers.
3. Try to start the engine again. If your
vehicle will not start, contact a Hyundai dealer or seek other quali- fied assistance.

IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START
WARNING:
If the engine will not start, do not push or pull the car to start it. This could result in a collision or cause other damage. In addition, push orpull starting may cause the cata- lytic converter to be overloaded and create a fire hazard.

JUMP STARTING
WARNING:
The gas produced by the battery during the jump-start operation ishighly explosive. If these instruc- tions are not followed exactly, seri- ous personal injury and damage tothe vehicle may occur! If you are not sure how to follow this proce- dure, seek qualified assistance.Automobile batteries contain sul- furic acid. This is poisonous and highly corrosive. When jump start-ing, wear protective glasses and be careful not to get acid on yourself, your clothing or on the car. 1. If the booster battery is installed in
another vehicle, be sure the twovehicles are not touching.
2. Turn off all unnecessary lights and
accessories in both vehicles.
3. Attach the clamps of the jumper cable in the exact order shown in theillustration. That is, first, attach oneclamp of the jumper cable to the positive (+) post or cable of the discharged battery. Then attach theother end of the same cable to the positive (+) post or cable of the booster battery. Next, using theother cable, attach one clamp to the negative (-) post or cable of the booster battery. Then attach theother end of that cable to a solid metal part of the engine away from the battery. Do not connect the cableto any moving part.
4. Start the engine in the car with the
booster battery and let it run for afew minutes. This will help to as- sure that the booster battery is fully charged. During the jumping opera-tion, run the engine in this vehicle at about 2,000 rpm.

o If you should accidentally get acid on
your skin or in your eyes, immedi- ately remove any contaminated cloth- ing and flush the area with clear water for at least 15 minutes. Thenpromptly obtain medical attention. If you must be transported to an emer- gency facility, continue to apply waterto the affected area with a sponge or cloth.
o The gas produced by the battery during the jump-start operation ishighly explosive. Do not smoke or allow a spark or open flame in thevicinity.
o The battery being used to provide
the jump start must be 12-volts. Ifyou cannot determine that it is a 12- volt battery, do not attempt to use it for the jump start.
o To jump start a car with a discharged battery, follow this procedure ex-actly:

IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
D030A02TB-AAT If your temperature gauge indicates overheating, you experience a loss of power, or hear loud pinging or knock- ing, the engine is probably too hot. Ifthis happens to you, you should:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P"
(automatic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.
3. If engine coolant is running out un- der the car or steam is coming outfrom the hood, stop the engine. Donot open the hood until the engine coolant has stopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is novisible loss of engine coolant and no steam, leave the engine running and check to be sure the enginecooling fan is operating. If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.
5. Start the engine in the car with the
discharged battery using the nor- mal starting procedure. After the engine starts, leave the jumper cables connected and let the enginerun at fast idle or about 2,000 rpm for several minutes.
6. Carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order of attachment.
If you do not know why your battery became discharged (because the lights were left on, etc.), have the charging system checked by your Hyundaidealer. 4. Check to see if the water pump drive
belt is missing. If it is not missing,check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfactory, check for coolant leaking from theradiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use, it is normal for cold water to bedraining from it when you stop).

While the engine is running, keephair, hands, and clothing away from moving parts such as the fan and drive belts to prevent injury.
