Restraint System Check
Checking the Restraint Systems
Safety Belts
Now and then, make sure the safety belt reminder
light and all your belts, buckles, latch plates,
retractors, and anchorages are working properly.

for more information.
Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt
system parts. If you see anything that might keep a
safety belt system from doing its job, have it
repaired. Keep safety belts clean and dry. See
Care of Safety Belts on page 482for more
information.
Torn or frayed safety belts may not protect you in
a crash. They can rip apart under impact forces.
If a belt is torn or frayed, get a new one right away.
Airbag System
The airbag system does not need regularly
scheduled maintenance or replacement. Make
sure the airbag readiness light is working.

information.
Notice:If an airbag covering is damaged,
opened, or broken, the airbag may not work
properly. Do not open or break the airbag
coverings. If there are any opened or broken
airbag covers, have the airbag covering and/or
airbag module replaced. For the location of

Inflate? on page 83. See your dealer/retailer
for service.

Oil Pressure Light
{CAUTION:
Do not keep driving if the oil pressure is
low. If you do, your engine can become
so hot that it catches re. You or others
could be burned. Check your oil as soon as
possible and have your vehicle serviced.
Notice:Lack of proper engine oil maintenance
may damage the engine. The repairs would
not be covered by your warranty. Always follow
the maintenance schedule in this manual for
changing engine oil.
This light tells you if
there could be a
problem with your
engine oil pressure.The light comes on when you turn your key to ON
or START. It goes off once you start your engine.
That is a check to be sure the light works. If it does
not come on, be sure to have it xed so it will be
there to warn you if something goes wrong.
When the light comes on and stays on, it means
that oil is not owing through your engine properly.
You could be low on oil and you might have
some other system problem.
Security Light
This light ashes
when the security
system is activated.

3. When the chocks are in place, release the
regular brakes until the chocks absorb
the load.
4. Reapply the regular brakes. Then apply your
parking brake and shift into PARK (P).
5. Release the regular brakes.
When You Are Ready to Leave After
Parking on a Hill
1. Apply your regular brakes and hold the pedal
down while you:
start your engine,
shift into a gear, and
release the parking brake.
2. Let up on the brake pedal.
3. Drive slowly until the trailer is clear of the
chocks.
4. Stop and have someone pick up and store
the chocks.
Maintenance When Trailer Towing
Your vehicle will need service more often
when you’re pulling a trailer. SeeScheduled

Things that are especially important in trailer
operation are automatic transmission uid
(don’t overll), engine oil, axle lubricant, drive
belt, cooling system and brake system. Each of
these is covered in this manual, and the Index will
help you nd them quickly. If you’re trailering,
it’s a good idea to review this information before
you start your trip.
Check periodically to see that all hitch nuts and
bolts are tight.

What to Do with Used Oil
Used engine oil contains certain elements that can
be unhealthy for your skin and could even
cause cancer. Do not let used oil stay on your
skin for very long. Clean your skin and nails
with soap and water, or a good hand cleaner.
Wash or properly dispose of clothing or rags
containing used engine oil. See the manufacturer’s
warnings about the use and disposal of oil
products.
Used oil can be a threat to the environment. If you
change your own oil, be sure to drain all the oil
from the lter before disposal. Never dispose of
oil by putting it in the trash, pouring it on the
ground, into sewers, or into streams or bodies of
water. Instead, recycle it by taking it to a place
that collects used oil. If you have a problem
properly disposing of used oil, ask your
dealer/retailer, a service station, or a local
recycling center for help.

When to Inspect the Engine Air
Cleaner/Filter
Inspect the air cleaner/lter at the MaintenanceII
intervals and replace it at the rst oil change
after each 50,000 mile (83 000 km) interval.

oil change.

When to Check Lubricant
Refer to the Maintenance Schedule to determine
how often to check the lubricant. SeeScheduled
Maintenance on page 502.
How to Check Lubricant
To get an accurate reading, the vehicle should be
on a level surface.If the level is below the bottom of the ller plug hole,
you will need to add some lubricant. Add enough
lubricant to raise the level to the bottom of the ller
plug hole. Use care not to overtighten the plug.
What to Use
Refer to the Maintenance Schedule to determine
what kind of lubricant to use. SeeRecommended
Fluids and Lubricants on page 511.
Headlamp Aiming
Headlamp aim has been preset at the factory and
should need no further adjustment.
However, if your vehicle is damaged in an
accident, the headlamp aim may be affected.
Aim adjustment to the low-beam headlamps may
be necessary if oncoming drivers ash their
high-beam headlamps at you (for vertical aim).
If you believe your headlamps need to be
re-aimed, it is recommend that you take the vehicle
to your dealer/retailer for service.

Using the Maintenance Schedule
We want to help you keep your vehicle in
good working condition. But we do not know
exactly how you will drive it. You may drive very
short distances only a few times a week. Or
you may drive long distances all the time in very
hot, dusty weather. You may use your vehicle
in making deliveries. Or you may drive it to work,
to do errands, or in many other ways.
Because of all the different ways people use their
vehicles, maintenance needs vary. You may need
more frequent checks and replacements. So please
read the following and note how you drive. If you
have any questions on how to keep your vehicle in
good condition, see your dealer/retailer.
This schedule is for vehicles that:
carry passengers and cargo within
recommended limits. You will nd these limits
on the Tire and Loading Information label.

Performing maintenance work on a vehicle
can be dangerous. In trying to do some
jobs, you can be seriously injured. Do your
own maintenance work only if you have the
required know-how and the proper tools
and equipment for the job. If you have any
doubt, see your dealer/retailer to have a
qualied technician do the work. SeeDoing

Some maintenance services can be complex. So,
unless you are technically qualied and have
the necessary equipment, you should have your
dealer/retailer do these jobs.

When your vehicle is serviced, make sure these
are used. All parts should be replaced and all
necessary repairs done before you or anyone else
drives the vehicle. We recommend the use of
genuine parts from your dealer/retailer.Scheduled Maintenance
When the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message
comes on, it means that service is required for your
vehicle. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as
possible within the next 600 miles (1 000 km). It is
possible that, if you are driving under the best
conditions, the engine oil life system might not
indicate that vehicle service is necessary for over a
year. However, the engine oil and lter must be
changed at least once a year and at this time the
system must be reset. Your dealer/retailer has
trained service technicians who will perform this
work using genuine parts and reset the system.
If the engine oil life system is ever reset
accidentally, you must service your vehicle within
3,000 miles (5 000 km) since your last service.
Remember to reset the oil life system whenever
