INTRODUCTION
The engine has an ECM to control major systems such as fuel con-
trol, ignition control, idle air control system, etc. The ECM accepts
input signals from sensors and instantly drives actuators. It is essen-
tial that both input and output signals are proper and stable. At the
same time, it is important that there are no malfunctions such as vac-
uum leaks, fouled spark plugs, or other malfunctions with the engine.
It is much more difficult to diagnose an incident that occurs intermit-
tently rather than continuously. Most intermittent incidents are
caused by poor electric connections or improper wiring. In this case,
careful checking of suspected circuits may help prevent the replace-
ment of good parts.
A visual check only may not find the cause of the incidents. A road
test with CONSULT-II (or GST) or a circuit tester connected should
be performed. Follow the Work Flow on EC-84, "
WORK FLOW" .
Before undertaking actual checks, take a few minutes to talk with a
customer who approaches with a driveability complaint. The cus-
tomer can supply good information about such incidents, especially
intermittent ones. Find out what symptoms are present and under
what conditions they occur. A Diagnostic Worksheet like the example
on EC-88, "
Worksheet Sample" should be used.
Start your diagnosis by looking for conventional malfunctions first.
This will help troubleshoot driveability malfunctions on an electroni-
cally controlled engine vehicle.

If engine starts, go to EC-305, "Diagnostic Procedure" . If engine does not start, remove spark plugs and
check for fouling, etc.
WITH GST
1. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
2. Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
3. Disconnect mass air flow sensor harness connector. Then
restart and run engine for at least 5 seconds at idle speed.
4. Stop engine and reconnect mass air flow sensor harness con- nector.
5. Select Service $03 with GST. Make sure DTC P0102 is detected.
6. Select Service $04 with GST and erase the DTC P0102.
7. Start engine again and let it idle for at least 10 minutes.
8. Select Service $07 with GST. The 1st trip DTC P0172 or P0175 should be detected at this stage, if a malfunction exists. If so, go
to EC-305, "
Diagnostic Procedure" .
NOTE:
If 1st trip DTC is not detected during above procedure, performing the following procedure is advised.
a. Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
b. Start engine and drive the vehicle under the similar conditions to (1st trip) Freeze Frame Data for 10 min- utes. Refer to the table below.
Hold the accelerator pedal as steady as possible.
The similar conditions to (1st trip) Freeze Frame Data means the vehicle operation that the following con-
ditions should be satisfied at the same time.
9. If it is difficult to start engine at step 7, the fuel injection system has a malfunction.
10. Crank engine while depressing accelerator pedal. If engine starts, go to EC-305, "
Diagnostic Procedure" . If engine does not start, remove spark plugs and
check for fouling, etc.

9. CHECK COMPRESSION PRESSURE
Check compression pressure. Refer to EM-63, "
CHECKING COMPRESSION PRESSURE" .
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 10.
NG >> Check pistons, piston rings, valves, valve seats and cylinder head gaskets.
10. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE
1. Install all removed parts.
2. Release fuel pressure to zero. Refer to EC-80, "
FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE" .
3. Install fuel pressure gauge and check fuel pressure. Refer to EC-82, "
FUEL PRESSURE CHECK" .
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 12.
NG >> GO TO 11.
11 . DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.
Fuel pump and circuit (Refer to EC-604, "FUEL PUMP" .)
Fuel pressure regulator (Refer to EC-82, "FUEL PRESSURE CHECK" .)
Fuel lines
Fuel filter for clogging

2. Disconnect spark plug and connect a known-good spark plug.
3. Crank engine for about 3 seconds, and recheck whether spark is generated between the spark plug and the grounded metal portion.
OK or NG

NG >> Check ignition coil, power transistor and their circuits. Refer to EC-618, "
IGNITION SIGNAL" .
8. CHECK SPARK PLUG
Check the initial spark plug for fouling, etc.

10. CHECK FUEL INJECTOR
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Remove fuel injector assembly. Refer to EM-31, "
FUEL INJECTOR AND FUEL TUBE" .
Keep fuel hose and all fuel injectors connected to fuel injector gallery.
3. Disconnect all ignition coil harness connectors.
4. Reconnect all fuel injector harness connectors disconnected.
5. Turn ignition switch ON. Make sure fuel does not drip from fuel injector.
OK or NG
OK (Does not drip.)>>GO TO 11.
NG (Drips.)>>Replace the fuel injector(s) from which fuel is dripping. Spark should be generated.

8. Install the valve collet using Tool. CAUTION:
When working, take care not to damage valve lifter holes.
9. Install the valve lifters.
Install the removed parts in their original locations.
If installing new lifters, select the correct size lifter for proper valve clearance. Refer to EM-55, "Va l v e
Clearance" .
10. Install the spark plug tube if necessary, following the procedure below.
a. Remove any old liquid gasket adhering to the cylinder-head spark plug tube hole.
b. Apply liquid gasket to area within approximately 12 mm (0.47 in) from the edge of the spark plug tube press-fit side.
Use Genuine RTV Silicone Sealant or equivalent. Refer to GI-46, "
Recommended Chemical Prod-
ucts and Sealants" .
c. Press-fit the spark plug tube to the specified height “H” using
suitable tool.
CAUTION:
When press-fitting, take care not to deform the spark plug
tube.
After press-fitting, wipe off any liquid gasket protruding
onto the cylinder-head upper face.
11. Install the spark plugs.

CYLINDER HEAD DISTORTION
1. Remove any oil, scale, gasket, sealant and carbon deposits from the cylinder head surface. CAUTION:
Do not allow any debris to enter the oil or coolant passages.
2. Measure the bottom surface of the cylinder head for distortion in six directions as shown, using suitable tools.
If measurement exceeds the limit, replace the cylinder head.Tool number : KV10116200 (J-26336-A)
