9. Remove power steering oil pump with piping connected from engine. Move it aside on suspension mem-
ber. Refer to PS-37, "
HYDRAULIC LINE" .
10. Remove front engine mounting and rear engine mounting through-bolts to remove suspension member.
11. Remove starter motor. Refer to SC-23, "
STARTING SYSTEM" .
12. Separate engine and transaxle and transfer assembly. Refer to MT-19, "
TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY" .
INSTALLATION
Install in the reverse order of removal.

Do not allow engine oil to get on mounting insulator. Be careful not to damage mounting insulator.

When installation directions are specified, install parts according to the direction marks on them referring
to figure of components. Refer to EM-222, "
ENGINE ASSEMBLY" .

Make sure that each mounting insulator is seated properly, and tighten mounting bolts and nuts.
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
Inspection for Leaks
The following are procedures for checking fluids leak, lubricates leak and exhaust gases leak.

Before starting engine, check oil/fluid levels including engine coolant and engine oil. If less than required
quantity, fill to the specified level. Refer to MA-17, "
RECOMMENDED FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS" .

Before starting engine, bleed air from fuel piping. Refer to FL-18, "Air Bleeding" .

Run engine to check for unusual noise and vibration.

Warm up engine thoroughly to make sure there is no leakage of fuel, exhaust gases, or any oil/fluids
including engine oil and engine coolant.

Bleed air from lines and hoses of applicable lines, such as in cooling system.

After cooling down engine, again check oil/fluid levels including engine oil and engine coolant. Refill to the
specified level, if necessary.
Summary of the inspection items:

1. Make sure that clevis pin floats freely in bore of clutch pedal. It
should not be bound by clevis or clutch pedal.
a. If clevis pin is not free, make sure that pedal stopper bolt or
ASCD clutch switch is not applying pressure to clutch pedal
causing clevis pin to bind. To adjust, loosen lock nut and turn
pedal stopper bolt or ASCD clutch switch.
b. Tighten lock not.
c. Make sure that clevis pin floats in bore of clutch pedal. It should
not be bound by clutch pedal.
d. If clevis pin is still not free, remove clevis pin and check for
deformation or damage. Replace clevis pin if necessary. Leave
clevis pin removed for step 2.
2. Check clutch pedal stroke for free range of movement.
a. With clevis pin removed, manually move clutch pedal up and
down to determine if it moves freely.
b. If any sticking is found, replace related parts (clutch pedal
bracket, assist spring, bushing etc.). Reassemble clutch pedal
and again make sure that clevis pin floats freely in bore of clutch
pedal.
3. Check clutch hydraulic and system components (clutch master
cylinder, clutch operating cylinder, clutch withdrawal lever, clutch
release bearing, etc.) for sticking or binding.
a. If any sticking or binding is found, repair or replace related parts as necessary.
b. If hydraulic system repair was necessary, bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Refer to CL-8, "
Air Bleeding
Procedure" .
NOTE:
Do not use a vacuum assist or any other type of power bleeder on this system. Use of a vacuum assist or
power bleeder will not purge all the air from the system.

CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER

REMOVAL
1. Using one of the following methods, remove hose from nipple.

Drain clutch fluid from reservoir tank and remove hose.

Remove hose from nipple. Immediately plug hose and reservoir tank to prevent clutch fluid from drip-
ping.
CAUTION:
Keep painted surface on the body or other parts free of clutch fluid. If it spills, wipe up immediately
and wash the affected area with water.
2. Remove clutch tube using a flare nut torque wrench.
3. Remove snap pin and clevis pin on clevis in passenger compartment to separate clutch pedal.
4. Remove mounting nuts on master cylinder assembly, and then master cylinder assembly from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
1. Check position of clevis and push rod. If measurement is outside
the standard length, adjust position of clevis and push rod.
2. Connect clutch tube to master cylinder assembly and tempo-
rarily tighten flare nut.
3. Install master cylinder assembly and tighten mounting nuts to
the specified torque. Refer to CL-9, "
Components" .
4. Tighten clutch tube flare nut to the specified torque using a flare
nut torque wrench. Refer to CL-13, "
Removal and Installation" .
5. Set clevis to clutch pedal and insert clevis pin.
6. Attach snap pin to clevis pin.
7. Install hose to nipple.
8. After completing this procedure, inspect and adjust for clutch pedal and then bleed the air from the clutch
hydraulic system. Refer to CL-5, "
On-Vehicle Inspection and Adjustment" and CL-8, "Air Bleeding Proce-
dure" .

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove spring pin using a pin punch.
2. Remove nipple and seal from cylinder body.
3. Loosen push rod lock nut then remove clevis and lock nut, if
necessary.
NOTE:
Clutch pedal height is controlled with position of clevis and push
rod.
4. Remove seat from cylinder body.
5. Remove stopper ring and stopper. Remove push rod from cylin-
der body while holding it securely to prevent piston assembly
popping out.
6. Remove piston assembly and return spring.
INSPECTION AFTER DISASSEMBLY
Check for any of the conditions shown below. If any malfunction is found, replace the part concerned.

Carefully observe the following steps during clutch tube removal and installation.
CAUTION:
Keep painted surface on the body or other parts free of clutch fluid. If it spills, wipe up immediately
and wash the affected area with water.

To fix clutch hose on bracket, position clutch hose clasp on the
emboss of bracket and drive lock plate vertically from above. Be
careful not to bend or twist clutch hose. Do not scratch or dam-
age clutch hose.

Tighten clutch tube flare nut to the specified torque.

Tighten clutch hose union bolt to the specified torque.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse copper washer.

After installation, bleed the air from the clutch hydraulic system.
Refer to CL-8, "
Air Bleeding Procedure" .

Checking Fluid LevelEGS001BV

Check fluid level with engine stopped.

Make sure that fluid level is between MIN and MAX.

Fluid levels at HOT and COLD are different. Do not confuse
them.
CAUTION:

The fluid level should not exceed the MAX line. Excessive
fluid will cause fluid leakage from the cap.

Do not reuse drained power steering fluid.

Recommended fluid is Type DEXRONTM III or equivalent.

Check hydraulic connections for fluid leakage, cracks, damage,
looseness, or wear.
1. Run engine until the fluid temperature reaches 50 to 80° C (122
to 176°F) in reservoir tank, and keep engine speed idle.
2. Turn steering wheel several times from full left stop to full right
stop.
3. Hold steering wheel at each lock position for five seconds and
carefully, check for fluid leakage.
CAUTION:
Do not hold the steering wheel in a locked position for more
than 10 seconds. (There is the possibility that oil pump may
be damaged.)
4. If fluid leakage at connections is noticed, then loosen flare nut and then retighten. Do not overtighten con-
nector as this can damage O-ring, washer and connector.
5. If fluid leakage from oil pump is noticed, check oil pump. Refer to PS-27, "
POWER STEERING OIL
PUMP" .
6. Check steering gear boots for accumulation of fluid indicating from steering gear.

If air bleeding is not complete, the following symptoms can be observed.

Bubbles are created in reservoir tank.

Clicking noise can be heard from oil pump.

Excessive buzzing in the oil pump.
NOTE:
Fluid noise may occur in the steering gear or oil pump. This does not affect performance or durability of
the system.
1. Turn steering wheel several times from full left stop to full right stop with engine off.
CAUTION:
Turn steering wheel while filling reservoir tank with fluid so as not to lower fluid level below the
MIN line.
2. Start engine and hold steering wheel at each lock position for 3 seconds at idle to check for fluid leakage.
3. Repeat step 2 above several times at approximately 3 second intervals.
CAUTION:
Do not hold the steering wheel in a locked position for more than 10 seconds. (There is the possi-
bility that oil pump may be damaged.)
4. Check fluid for bubbles and while contamination.HOT : Fluid temperature 50 - 80 °C (122 - 176°F)
COLD : Fluid temperature 0 - 30°C (32 - 86°F)

6. Remove steering outer socket from steering knuckle so as not to
damage ball joint boot using the ball joint remover (suitable tool).
CAUTION:
Temporarily tighten the nut to prevent damage to threads
and to prevent the ball joint remover (suitable tool) from
suddenly coming off.
7. Remove high-pressure piping and low-pressure hose of hydrau-
lic piping, and then drain power steering fluid. Refer to PS-37,
"HYDRAULIC LINE" .
8. Remove the power steering tube bracket mounting bolts and
nuts, and then remove power steering tube bracket from steer-
ing gear assembly.
9. Tilt steering gear assembly to prevent any contact with other
parts and then remove it from right side of vehicle.
INSTALLATION
Installation in the reverse order of the removal. For tightening torque, refer to PS-16, "COMPONENT" .

When installing lower shaft to steering gear, follow the procedure listed below.
–Set rack of steering gear in the neutral position.
NOTE:
To get the neutral position of rack, turn gear sub assembly and measure the distance of inner socket, and
then measure the intermediate position of the distance.
–Align rear cover cap projection with the projection of gear sub assembly.
–Align slit part of lower shaft with the projection of rear cover cap.
And then install it onto rear cover cap of steering gear assembly.
Make sure that the slit part of lower shaft is aligned with both the
projection of rear cover cap and the marking position of gear sub
assembly.
–After installation, bleed air from the steering hydraulic system.
Refer to PS-6, "
Air Bleeding Hydraulic System" .
–Perform final tightening of nuts and bolts on each part under
unladen conditions with tyres on level ground when removing
steering gear assembly. Check wheel alignment. Refer to FSU-
6, "Wheel Alignment" .
–Adjust neutral position of steering angle sensor after checking
wheel alignment. Refer to BRC-52, "
Adjustment of Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position" .
