DTC P0128 THERMOSTAT FUNCTIONPFP:21200
On Board Diagnosis LogicABS007KR
Engine coolant temperature has not risen enough to open the thermostat even though the engine has run long
enough.
This is due to a leak in the seal or the thermostat stuck open.
DTC Confirmation ProcedureABS007KS
NOTE:
If DTC Confirmation Procedure has been previously conducted, always turn ignition switch OFF and wait at
least 10 seconds before conducting the next test.
TESTING CONDITION:
For best results, perform at ambient temperature of –10 °C (14 °F) or higher.
For best results, perform at engine coolant temperature of –10 °C (14 °F) to 60 °C (140 °F).
WITH CONSULT-II
1. Replace thermostat with new one. Refer to CO-53, "THERMOSTAT AND WATER CONTROL VALVE" .
Use only a genuine NISSAN thermostat as a replacement. If an incorrect thermostat is used, the MIL may
come on.
2. Turn ignition switch ON.
3. Select “COOLAN TEMP/S” in “DATA MONITOR” mode with CONSULT-II.
4. Check that the “COOLAN TEMP/S” is above 60 °C (140 °F).
If it is below 60 °C (140 °F), go to following step.
If it is above 60 °C (140 °F), cool down the engine to less than 60 °C (140 °F), then retry from step 1.
5. Drive vehicle for 10 consecutive minutes under the following conditions.
If 1st trip DTC is detected, go to EC-933, "
Diagnostic Procedure" .
WITH GST
1. Follow the procedure “WITH CONSULT-II” above.

Cooling Fan Relay Operation
The ECM controls cooling fan relays in the IPDM E/R through CAN communication line.
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION
Cooling Fan Motor
The cooling fan at each speed when the current flows in the cooling fan motor as follows.

If the cooling fan or another component in the cooling system malfunctions, engine coolant temperature will
rise.
When the engine coolant temperature reaches an abnormally high temperature condition, a malfunction is
indicated.
This self-diagnosis has the one trip detection logic.
CAUTION:
When a malfunction is indicated, be sure to replace the coolant. Refer to CO-37, "
Changing Engine
Coolant" . Also, replace the engine oil. Refer to LU-27, "Changing Engine Oil" .
1. Fill radiator with coolant up to specified level with a filling speed of 2 liters per minute. Be sure to use coolant with the proper mixture ratio. Refer to MA-13, "
Anti-Freeze Coolant Mixture Ratio" .
2. After refilling coolant, run engine to ensure that no water-flow noise is emitted.

7. CHECK RADIATOR CAP
Apply pressure to cap with a tester.
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 8.
NG >> Replace radiator cap.
8. CHECK COMPONENT PARTS
Check the following.
Thermostat. (Refer to CO-53, "THERMOSTAT AND WATER CONTROL VALVE" .)
Water control valve. (Refer to CO-53, "THERMOSTAT AND WATER CONTROL VALVE" .)
Engine coolant temperature sensor. (Refer to EC-919, "Component Inspection" .)
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 9.
NG >> Replace malfunctioning component.
9. CHECK MAIN 13 CAUSES
If the cause cannot be isolated, go to EC-1223, "
Main 13 Causes of Overheating" .

1. CHECK POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector E6.
3. Check voltage between IPDM E/R terminal 16 and ground with CONSULT-II or tester.
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 3.
NG >> GO TO 2.
2. DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.

PROCEDURE B
1. CHECK COOLING FAN MOTOR CIRCUIT FOR OPEN OR SHORT
1. Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector E6.
2. Disconnect cooling fan motor harness connector.
3. Check harness continuity between cooling fan motor terminal 1 and IPDM E/R terminal 11.
Refer to wiring diagram.
4. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power.
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 2.
NG >> Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power
in harness or connectors.
2. CHECK COOLING FAN MOTOR
Refer to EC-1224, "
Component Inspection" .
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 3.
NG >> Replace cooling fan motor.
3. CHECK INTERMITTENT INCIDENT
Perform EC-854, "
TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS FOR INTERMITTENT INCIDENT" .
OK or NG
OK >> Replace IPDM E/R. Refer to PG-18, "IPDM E/R (INTELLIGENT POWER DISTRIBUTION MOD-

CYLINDER HEAD

CAUTION:
Temporary fitting means the status that engine is adequately stable though the hoist is released
from hanging.
NOTE:
At the time of the start of this procedure front suspension member is removed, and cylinder head is
hanged by hoist with the engine slinger installed.
3. Release the hoist from hanging, then remove the engine slinger.
4. Remove the following parts:
Fuel tube and fuel injector assembly; Refer to EM-45, "FUEL INJECTOR AND FUEL TUBE" .
Intake manifold; Refer to EM-24, "INTAKE MANIFOLD" .
Exhaust manifold; Refer to EM-26, "EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND THREE WAY CATALYST" .
Water inlet and thermostat assembly; Refer to CO-26, "WATER INLET AND THERMOSTAT ASSEM-
BLY" .
Water outlet, water pipe and heater pipe; Refer to CO-28, "WATER OUTLET AND WATER PIPING" .
5. Remove cylinder head bolts in reverse order as shown in the fig- ure with cylinder head bolt wrench (commercial service tool) and
power tool to remove cylinder heads (right and left banks).
6. Remove cylinder head gaskets.
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
Cylinder Head Bolts Outer Diameter
Cylinder head bolts are tightened by plastic zone tightening
method. Whenever the size difference between “d1” and “d2”
exceeds the limit, replace them with new one.
If reduction of outer diameter appears in a position other than
“d2”, use it as “d2” point.
Cylinder Head Distortion
NOTE:
When performing this inspection, cylinder block distortion should be also checking. Refer to EM-143, "
CYLIN-
DER BLOCK DISTORTION" .

REMOVAL
1. Remove engine assembly from vehicle. Refer to EM-240, "ENGINE ASSEMBLY" .
2. Remove the following components and related parts:
Drive belt auto tensioner and idler pulley; Refer to EM-175, "Drive Belt Auto Tensioner and Idler Pulley"
.
Thermostat housing and hoses; Refer to CO-53, "THERMOSTAT AND WATER CONTROL VALVE" .
Ignition coil; Refer to EM-189, "IGNITION COIL" .
Rocker cover; Refer to EM-197, "ROCKER COVER" .
3. If necessary, remove intake valve timing control position sensor (right and left bank) and camshaft position sensor (PHASE) from
intake valve timing control cover and front cover.
CAUTION:
Handle carefully to avoid dropping and shocks.
Do not disassemble.
4. If necessary, remove intake valve timing control solenoid valve from intake valve timing control cover. CAUTION:
Handle components and parts carefully to avoid dropping and shocks.
Do not disassemble.
Do not allow metal powder to adhere to magnetic part at sensor tip.
Do not place sensors in a location where they are exposed to magnetism.
