The following symbols are found in this
Operator’s Manual:
* Optional equipment is identified
with an asterisk. Since standard
equipment varies between models,
the descriptions and illustrations in
this manual may differ slightly from
the actual equipment of your vehi-
cle.
This symbol points to instructions for
you to follow.
A number of these symbols appearing
in succession indicates a multiple-step
procedure.
Page This symbol tells you where to look for further information on a
topic.
This continuation symbol marks
an interrupted procedure which
will be continued on the next
page.
-> In the glossary of technical terms, this symbol is used to
indicate cross-references to
term definitions.

lamp switch.

Make sure the ignition is switched on.
All the lights in the instrument cluster
come on.
Press button 3 for the left mirror or
button 2 for the right mirror.
Push adjustment button 1 up, down,
left or right according to the setting de-
sired. For more information, see “Rear view mir-
rors” (
page 146).

Exercise care when using the passenger
side exterior rear view mirror. The mirror
surface is convex (outwardly curved surface
for a wider field of view). Objects in mirror
are closer than they appear. Check your in-
side rear view mirror or glance over your
shoulder before changing lanes. !Electrolyte drops coming into contact
with the vehicle paint finish can only be
completely removed while in their
liquid state by applying plenty of water.
iThe memory function* (
page 95) lets
you store the setting for the exterior
rear view mirrors together with the set-
tings for the steering wheel and seat
positions.
!If an exterior rear view mirror was forc-
ibly pushed forward (hit from the rear)
or forcibly pushed backward (hit from
the front), reposition it by applying firm
pressure until it snaps into place.
The mirror housing is now properly po-
sitioned and you can adjust the mirror
normally.iAt low ambient temperatures, the mir-
rors will be heated automatically.

Seats
Removing and installing rear seat head
restraints

Removing rear seat head restraints
Fold back head restraint (
page 92).
Pull head restraint to its highest posi-
tion.
Press release button 1 and pull out
head restraint.
Installing rear seat head restraints
Insert head restraint and push it down
until it engages.
Press release button 1 and adjust
head restraint to desired position.
Heated seats*
Both switches for the front seats are locat-
ed in the center console.

Make sure the ignition is switched on.
All the lights in the instrument cluster
come on.
Warning!

For your protection, drive only with properly
positioned head restraints.
Adjust head restraint so that the head re-
straint supports the back of the head at eye
level. This will reduce the potential for injury
to the head and neck in the event of an ac-
cident or similar situation.
Do not drive the vehicle without the seat
head restraints. Head restraints are intend-
ed to help reduce injuries during an acci-
dent.
Do not interchange head restraints from
front and rear seat.

Lighting
Manual headlamp mode
The low beam headlamps and parking
lamps can be switched on and off with the
exterior lamp switch.
Automatic headlamp mode
The parking lamps, low beam headlamps
and license plate lamps switch on and off
automatically depending on the brightness
of the ambient light.
Turn the exterior lamp switch to
U.
iIf you remove the SmartKey and open
the driver’s door while the parking
lamps or low beam headlamps are
switched on,
a warning sounds

iWith the daytime running lamp mode
activated and the engine running, the
low beam headlamps cannot be
switched off manually.

If the exterior lamp switch is set to U,
the headlamps may switch off unexpect-
edly when the system senses bright am-
bient light, for example light from
oncoming traffic.
the headlamps will not be automatically
switched on under foggy conditions.
To minimize risk to you and to others, acti-
vate headlamps by turning exterior lamp
switch to
B
when driving or when traffic
and / or ambient lighting conditions require
you to do so.
In low ambient lighting conditions, only
switch from position
U
to
B
with the
vehicle at a standstill. Switching from U
to
B
will briefly switch off the head-
lamps. Doing so while driving in low ambient
lighting conditions may result in an acci-
dent.
The automatic headlamp feature is only an
aid to the driver. The driver is responsible for
the operation of the vehicle's lights at all
times.

proximately five minutes, when the
SmartKey is removed or in the starter
switch position 0.
An interior lamp switched on manually
does not go out automatically.

If you leave the trunk lid open for an ex-
tended period of time, the trunk light-
ing will switch off automatically after
approximately ten minutes.

Control system
Setting night security illumination
(Exterior lamps delayed shut-off)
Use the
HEADLIGHTS DELAYED SHUT-OFF
function to set whether and for how long
you would like the exterior lamps to illumi-
nate during darkness after all doors are
closed.
When the delayed shut-off feature is acti-
vated and the exterior lamp switch is in po-
sition U, the following lamps will
remain lit after you remove the SmartKey
from the starter switch:
Parking lamps
Tail lamps
License plate lamps
Front fog lamps To activate night security illumination:
Select delayed shut-off period (see be-
low).
Turn the exterior lamp switch to posi-
tion
U .
To select delayed shut-off period:
Move the selection marker with

submenu.

The selection marker is on the current
setting.

sired lamp-on period.
You can select:

, the delayed shut-off feature is
deactivated

, 45 s

60 s
, the delayed
shut-off feature is activated
You can temporarily deactivate the de-
layed shut-off feature:
Before leaving the vehicle turn the
SmartKey in the starter switch to
position 0.
Then turn it to position 2 and back
to 0.
The delayed shut-off feature is deacti-
vated. It will reactivate as soon as you
reinsert the SmartKey in the starter
switch.
iYou can reactivate this function within
ten minutes by opening a door.
If you do not open a door after remov-
ing the SmartKey, the lamps will auto-
matically switch off after 60 seconds.
