Operating checkWith the ignition switched on (2nd notch on the key),the warning light comingon, accompanied by an
audible signal and the message"Passenger air bag disarmed"
on the multifunction display, indi-cates that the passenger air bag isdisarmed ( "OFF"position).
The warning light remains onthroughout the disarming process. Side air bags* and curtain air bags** Side air bags are incorporated into the front seat back frame, onthe door side. Curtain air bags are incorporated into the door pillars and the top ofthe passenger compartment. They are deployed independently
of each other, depending onwhich side the collision occurs.

AIR BAGS The air bag system has been desi- gned to maximise the safety of theoccupants in the event of seriouscollisions. It works in conjunctionwith the force limiting seat belts. Front air bags These are folded in the centre of the steering wheel for the driverand in the fascia for the front
passenger. They are deployed
simultaneously, except in caseswhere the passenger air bag isdisarmed. Precautions regarding the passenger air bag ➜
disarm the air bag if you ins- tall a rear facing child seat,
➜ activate the air bag for an
adult passenger.

Disarming the passenger air bag* ➜with the ignition off, insert the key into slot 1and turn the
passenger air bag switch tothe "OFF" position.
As soon as you remove the childseat, turn the air bag switch to the"ON" position, to activate the air
bag again.

AUTOMATIC GEARBOX "PORSCHE TIPTRONIC SYSTEM" The four speed automaticgearbox offers a choice between the comfort of
automatic integral regulation enhanced by a sportand snow programme,
or the pleasure of manual gear changing.
Gear selection gate ➜ Move the lever in the gate to select one of the functions. Once the function is selected, the indicator light for that function is displayed on the instrument panel screen.

To change the four gearsmanually:
➜ Push the lever to the +symbol to change up to the next gear and pull
the handle towards the -symbol to change down to the next gear.
Note: the S(sport) and
(snow) programmes do not operate when in

➜ It is essential to press thebrake pedal to exit positionP,

D or M, then gradually release
the pressure on the brakepedal; the vehicle will move
off immediately.
You can also move off from posi-tion N:
➜ Release the handbrake, withyour foot on the brake.
➜ Select function R, D or Mthen
gradually release the pressureon the brake pedal; the vehicle
will move off immediately.
When the engine is idlingwith the brakes notapplied, if function R, D
or Mis selected, the
vehicle moves without the acce-lerator being pressed. For this reason, do not
leave children unatten-
ded inside the car, withthe engine running.86

SERVICE INDICATOR Located on the instrument panel with the total distance recorder (total andtrip distances), this programmes ser-vice intervals depending on the useof the vehicle. Operation
A few moments after the ignition has been switched on, the spanner sho-wing the service symbols lights up;the display for the total distancerecorder tells you (in round figures)the distance remaining before yournext service. Example: 4 800 miles remain before
the next service is due. When the ignition is switched on and for a fewseconds, the display shows: A few seconds after switching on theignition, the total distance recorderresumes normal operation and thedisplay shows the total and trip dis-tances. The distance remaining before the next service is less than 1000miles
A few seconds after switching on the ignition, the total distance recorderresumes normal operation and the
spanner remains lit. This indicatesthat a service should be carried out
shortly.The service is overdue Each time the ignition is switched on and for a few seconds, the symboland the excess distance flash. Note:
with the engine running the
symbol flashes until the service has been carried out.
