Unlocking Pull on the handle and press the but- ton to release the handbrake.Illumination of this light,accompanied by an audiblesignal and the message"handbrake on" on the

cates that the handbrake is still on orhas not been properly released.
Operating abnormality Any operating abnormality is indica- ted by an audible signal accompa-nied by the message "Automatic
gearbox faulty" on the multi-func-
tion display and flashing of the Sportand Snow warning lights on the ins-trument panel. In this situation thegearbox operates in downgrade
mode (locked in 3rd gear). You mayfeel a substantial knock when chan-ging from Pto Rand from Nto R
(this will not cause any damage tothe gearbox). Do not exceed 60 mph (100 km/h), speed restrictions permitting.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible. When this warning lightcomes on, accompanied byan audible signal and themessage
"Braking fault" , it
indicates that there is a mal-
function of the electronic brake forcedistribution, which can cause a lossof control of the vehicle when bra-king.
Stop immediately.

HANDBRAKE Locking Pull the handbrake to immobilise your vehicle.
Warning:
when parking on a slope,

ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
The ABS system with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD)increases the stability and manoeu-vrability of your vehicle, particularlyon poor or slippery road surfaces. Note: when changing wheels (tyres
and rims), make sure that these are approved. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.

If the battery is flat and the lever is in position P, it
will be impossible tochange to another posi-tion. Normal operation of the ABS maymake itself felt by slight vibrationsof the brake pedal. In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasingthe pressure.
EMERGENCY BRAKING
ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pressure to be
reached more quickly, thus reducingthe stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which the
brake pedal is activated, the effect ofwhich is a reduction in the resistance ofthe pedal and an increase in braking
efficiency.

TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)*
AND DYNAMIC STABILITY
CONTROL (ESP)* These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS system.
The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, byacting on the brakes and the engine.It also allows the directional stabilityof the vehicle to be improved onacceleration. If there is a variation between the tra- jectory followed by the vehicle and
that required by the driver, the ESPsystem automatically acts on theengine and the brake of one or morewheels, in order to put the vehicleback on course.

The ESP system offers increased safety duringnormal driving, but shouldnot incite the driver totake risks or to drive at
high speed. The operation of the system is ensured to the extent to which therecommendations of the manufac-turer regarding the wheels (tyresand wheel rims), the braking com-ponents, the electronic compo-nents and the assembly and repairprocedures within the PEUGEOTnetwork are observed. After an impact, have the system
checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.

Front air bag malfunctionIf this warning light comes on, accompanied by a buz-zer and the message "Air
bag fault" on the multifunc-
tion display, contact a
PEUGEOT dealer to have the sys-tem checked.
AIR BAGS The air bags have been designed to maximise the safety of the occupantsin the event of serious collisions;they work in conjunction with theforce limiting seat belts. In the event of a serious collision, the electronic detectors record and ana-lyse any abrupt deceleration of thevehicle: if the triggering threshold isreached, the air bags inflate instantlyand protect the occupants of thevehicle. Immediately after the impact, the air
bags deflate rapidly, so that they donot hinder the visibility of the occu-pants nor their possible exit from thevehicle. The air bags will not be deployed in collisions which are not serious, for
which the seat belt is sufficient to
provide maximum protection. Theseriousness of the collision dependson the nature of the obstacle and thespeed of the vehicle at the momentof impact. Air bags operate only when the ignition is switched on. Note: the gas escaping from the air
bags can be a minor irritant. FRONT AIR BAGS These are folded in the centre of the steering wheel for the driver and in
the fascia for the front passenger.
They are deployed simultaneously,except in cases where the air bag isdisarmed.
Disarming the passenger air bag*
To ensure the safety of your child, it is essential to disarm the pas-senger air bag when you install arear-facing child seat on the frontpassenger seat.
With the ignition switched off, insert the key into the passengerair bag disarming slot 1, turn it to
the "OFF" position, then remove
it keeping it in this position.
The air bag warning light on the instru-ment panel is lit throughout the disar-ming process.

CHANGING A WINDSCREEN WIPER BLADE Placing the wiper blades in the maintenance position Less than one minute after swit-
ching off the ignition, activate thewindscreen wiper stalk to posi-tion the blades in the centre ofthe windscreen (maintenanceposition).
Replacing a blade Lift the arm, then unclip the blade and remove it.
Fit the new blade and fold downthe arm.
Note: the shortest blade is fitted to
the wiper arm on the right side of thevehicle.
To park the blades, switch on the ignition and operate the wind-screen wiper stalk. ECONOMY MODE FUNCTION After the engine has stopped, certain
functions (windscreen wiper, electricwindows, sunroof*, courtesy lights,audio equipment etc.) can only beused for thirty minutes, to prevent
discharging the battery.
Once the thirty minutes are over, the message
"Economy mode active"
appears on the multifunction displayand the active functions are put on
standby.
To resume use of these functions, start the engine and let it run for afew seconds.
WARNING: a flat battery will prevent
the engine from starting. LOAD REDUCTION When driving, certain functions (air conditioning*, heated rear screen,heating system for passenger com-partment of diesel vehicles, etc.)
may be switched off temporarily,depending on the level of batterycharge. Reactivation of these functions is automatic, once the battery charge is
sufficient. Note:
at the risk of discharging the
battery, the functions that have been switched off may be reactivated
manually.
