fuels in your diesel engine. The use of those can cause
engine damage.
+Do not use summer fuel at temperatures below þ7ÉC
(20ÉF). The cold temperatures will cause wax to form in the
fuel. As a result, it may prevent the engine from running
smoothly.
+Do not add gasoline or other alternate fuels to diesel fuel.
PRECAUTIONS FOR AIR CONDITIONINGNJGI0001S09Use an approved refrigerant recovery unit any time the air condi-
tioning system must be discharged. Refer to HA-84, ªHFC-134a
(R-134a) Service Procedureº for specific instructions.

JEM265G
PREPARATIVE WORKNJEM0102S01Remove the following parts.
+Engine coolant (drain)
Refer to LC-43, ªChanging Engine Coolantº.
+Air duct, air inlet pipe
+Water inlet pipe
+Catalytic converter
+Exhaust manifold cover
+Insulator
+Each wiring and piping (disconnect/move)
JEM266G
EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND TURBOCHARGERNJEM0102S02RemovalNJEM0102S0201+Loosen exhaust manifold mounting nuts in the reverse order
specified in the figure.
+Rotate the exhaust manifold and turbocharger assembly so
that the rear side (EGR tube mounting side) faces upward. And
then pull out the assembly from between the engine and the
air conditioning piping.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to deform each turbocharger piping when pull-
ing out the assembly.

Changing Engine CoolantNJLC0079WARNING:
To avoid the danger of being scalded, never change the cool-
ant when the engine is hot.
Ð DRAINING ENGINE COOLANT ÐNJLC0079S011. Set air conditioning system as follows to prevent coolant from
remaining in the system.
a. Turn ignition switch ON and set temperature controller to maxi-
mum hot position.
b. Wait 10 seconds before turning ignition switch OFF.
SMA033D
2. Remove lower radiator hose, and remove radiator filler cap to
drain coolant.
3. Remove reservoir tank, drain coolant, then clean reservoir
tank.
+Be careful not to allow coolant to contact drive belts.
4. Cover the exhaust tube heat shield to prevent from splashing
coolant.
JLC429B
YLC026
5. Remove drain plug of cylinder block and air relief plug.
6. Check drained coolant for contaminants such as rust, corro-
sion or discoloration. If contaminated flush engine cooling
system, refer to LC-45, ªFLUSHING COOLING SYSTEMº.
7. Blow the coolant around the exhaust tube heat shield.
NOTE:
An asterisk (*1) in the figure means ªNot installed on some
modelsº.
JLC298B
Ð REFILLING ENGINE COOLANT ÐNJLC0079S021. Install reservoir tank, radiator drain cock or lower radiator hose
and cylinder block drain plug.
+Apply sealant to the thread of cylinder block drain plugs.
:8-11N´m(0.8 - 1.2 kg-m, 70 - 104 in-lb)
2. Fill radiator slowly with coolant until coolant spills from the air
relief plugs, then install air relief plugs.
+Location of air relief plugs
Water inlet and rear side intake manifold water tubes
3. Disconnect heater hose at engine, pour coolant into the hose
so that it flows toward the heater core.

System DescriptionNJEC0015S02
SEF742M
The ignition timing is controlled by the ECM to maintain the best air-fuel ratio for every running condition of
the engine. The ignition timing data is stored in the ECM. This data forms the map shown above.
The ECM receives information such as the injection pulse width, crankshaft position sensor signal and cam-
shaft position sensor signal. Computing this information, ignition signals are transmitted to the power transis-
tor.
e.g., N: 1,800 rpm, Tp: 1.50 msec
AÉBTDC
During the following conditions, the ignition timing is revised by the ECM according to the other data stored
in the ECM.
+At starting
+During warm-up
+At idle
+During acceleration
The knock sensor retard system is designed only for emergencies. The basic ignition timing is programmed
within the anti-knocking zone, if recommended fuel is used under dry conditions. The retard system does not
operate under normal driving conditions.
If engine knocking occurs, the knock sensor monitors the condition. The signal is transmitted to the ECM. The
ECM retards the ignition timing to eliminate the knocking condition.

Under the following conditions, the air conditioner is turned off.
+When the accelerator pedal is fully depressed.
+When cranking the engine.
