(b) When the vehicle is involved in a frontal collision in the
hatched area (Fig. 1) and the shock is larger than the pre-
determined level, the SRS is activated automatically. A
safing sensor is designed to go on at a smaller decelera-
tion rate than the airbag sensor. As illustrated in Fig. 2,
ignition is caused when current flows to the squib, which
happens when a safing sensor and the deceleration sen-
sor go on simultaneously. When a deceleration force acts
on the sensors, 2 squibs in the driver airbag and front pas-
senger airbag ignite and generate gas. The gas discharg-
ing into the driver airbag and front passenger airbag rap-
idly increases the pressure inside the bags, breaking
open the steering wheel pad and instrument panel door.
Bag inflation then ends, and the bags deflate as the gas
is discharged through discharge holes at the bag’s rear or
side.
7. DISCONNECTION OF SIDE AND CURTAIN SHIELD
AIRBAG SENSOR CONNECTOR
(a) With holding both flank sides of the outer, slide the outer
to the direction shown by an arrow.
(b) Lock of the connectors is released, then disconnect the
connectors.
HINT:
Make sure to hold both flank sides of the outer. If holding the top
and bottom sides, it will obstruct disconnection.

Always tie down the side airbag assembly with the
airbag door facing inside.
NOTICE:
The tire will be marked by the airbag deployment, so use
the redundant tire.
(d) Check functioning of the SST.

(e) Place the tires.
(1) Place at least 2 tires under the tire to which the side
airbag assembly is tied.
(2) Place at least 2 tires over the tire to which the side
airbag assembly is tied. The top tire should have the
wheel installed.
(3) Tie the tires together with 2 wire harnesses.
CAUTION:
Make sure that the wire harnesses are tight. It is very dan-
gerous when loose wire harnesses results in the tires com-
ing free due to the shock from the airbag deploying.
HINT:
Place the SST connector and wire harness inside tires. Secure
at least 1 m (3 ft) of slack for the wire harness.
(f) Install the SST.
Connect the connector of 2 SST to the side airbag assem-
bly connector.

NOTICE:
To avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness,
do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.
(g) Deploy the airbag.

(2) Position the inflater of curtain shield airbag inside
the tire with the airbag explosion direction facing in-
side.
Tire size : Must exceed the following dimensions:
Width 185 mm (7.28 in.)
Inner diameter 360 mm (14.17 in.)
CAUTION:

Make sure the wire harness is tight. It is very danger-
ous when a loose wire harness results in the curtain
shield airbag coming free due to the shock from the
airbag exploding.

Always tie down the curtain shield airbag with the ex-
plosion facing inside.
NOTICE:
The tire will be marked by the airbag explosion, so use the
redundant tire.
(c) Check functioning of the SST.

(d) Place the tires.

(2) Place at least 2 tires over the tire to which the curtain
shield airbag is tied. The top tire should have the

REMOVAL
1. REMOVE THESE PARTS:
(a) Remove the front door opening trims.
(b) Remove the front pillar garnishes.
(c) w/ Curtain Shield Airbag:
(1) Remove the 2 bolts.
(2) Pack the airbag with protection cover.
(3) Using a screwdriver, raise the pillar garnish cover.
(4) Remove the bolt, pillar garnish cover and front pillar
garnish.
NOTICE:
Protection rang is from instrument panel to ceiling.
(d) Remove the front door scuff plates.
(e) Remove the cowl side trims.
(f) Remove the rear door opening trims.
(g) Remove the rear door scuff plates.
(h) Remove the center pillar lower covers.
(i) Remove the front seats.
2. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL
(See Pub. No.RM599E on page SR–13)
3. REMOVE LOWER FINISH PANEL
(a) Remove the 2 screws and hood lock control lever.
(b) Remove the 2 screws and lower finish panel.
4. REMOVE THESE PARTS:
(See Pub. No.RM599E on page SR–13)
(a) Remove the column cover.
(b) Remove the combination switch.
(c) Remove the steering column.
5. REMOVE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Remove the 2 screws.
(b) Using a screwdriver, remove the cluster finish panel, then
disconnect the connector.
HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
6. REMOVE COMBINATION METER

8. INSTALL NO.1 UNDER COVER
Install the No.1 under cover.
9. INSTALL NO.1 REGISTER
Install the No.1 register.

(a) Install the cluster finish panel, then connect the connec-
tor.
(b) Install the 2 screws.
12. INSTALL THESE PARTS:
(See Pub. No. RM 599E, page SR–13)
(a) Install the steering column.
(b) Install the combination switch.
(c) Install the column cover.
13. INSTALL LOWER FINISH PANEL
(a) Install the lower finish panel with the 2 screws.
(b) Install the hood lock control lever.
14. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL
(See Pub. No. RM 599E, page SR–13)
15. INSTALL THESE PARTS:
(a) Install the front seats.
Torque: 37 N·m (375 kgf·cm, 27 ft·lbf)
(b) Install the center pillar lower covers.
(c) Install the rear door scuff plates.
(d) Install the rear door opening trims.
(e) Install the cowl side trims.
(f) Install the front door scuff plates.
