Expectant mothers should always wear
their safety belts, taking care to position
the lap belt against the lower hips,
where it will not exert pressure against
the abdominal area.
Never attempt to modify the safety
belts.c
For care instructions refer to page 134.Never install a rear-facing child restraint
system in the front passenger's seat!
Never attempt to modify either the
safety belts or any child restraint sys-
tem.
Should the safety belts be damaged or
stretched in an accident, the entire belt
system - including safety belt tension-
ers - must be replaced and the anchor-
ing mounts inspected at a BMW
Retailer.
If the safety belt tensioner has been
activated, a distance of roughly 0.8 in
(20 mm) will remain between the safety
belt lock and the tensioner module.
Installing child restraintsTo install and secure child restraint sys-
tems, all rear safety belts (and the front
passenger's safety belt) are equipped
with a special locking mode.
A label with operating instructions is
attached to the belt next to the latch
plate. To lock the beltExtract the entire length of the belt from
the inertia reel mechanism. Allow the
reel to retract the belt somewhat and
engage the buckle, then tighten the belt
against the child restraint system. The
retraction mechanism is now locked.
Always observe the installation instruc-
tions provided by the manufacturer of
the child restraint system.360us125

5 Automatic windshield washer
1 Intermittent wipe The length of the interval is varied auto-
matically according to the car's actual
road speed.
The headlamp cleaning equipment
* can
also influence this interval.
dShift briefly out of 0 into 1, and back
to 0.
dThe time lapse until the switching on
(out of 0 into 1) is the desired interval
(maximum 25 seconds).
Delete the programming:
dapprox. 10 seconds after the lever is
in position 0 or
dafter switching off the engine.
2 Normal wipeThe wipers automatically revert to inter-
mittent operation when the vehicle is
stationary.5 Automatic windshield washersThe system sprays washer fluid against
the windshield and actuates the wipers
for a brief period.
(Exception: If you pull the lever briefly,
the system sprays fluid onto the wind-
shield without activating the wipers).
a
Do not use the washers when there
is a danger of the fluid freezing on the
windshield, as otherwise your vision
could be obscured. Use antifreeze (refer
to page 124).
Do not use the washers when the reser-
voir is empty, otherwise damage to the
washer pump could result.c

Pull the strap to fold down the armrest.
To open drawer
*:
Unlock and pull out the drawer by pull-
ing on the drawer handle. The drawer
locks in any position. The cup holder
can be shifted as necessary.
BMW ConvertibleVehicles without ski bag
*: Storage
compartment, accessible by removing
the filler piece and releasing the trim
(refer to page 97).
The rear backrest is divided in the cen-
ter. Each side can be folded down sep-
arately to carry long objects.
To release:
Reach into the handle recess, press
down and pull forward.
When folding back the rear backrest,
make sure that the locking device is
properly engaged to ensure proper
operation of the safety belt. The red
slide must move downward.
If the rear backrest is not locked, the
safety belt can not be pulled out.It makes possible a safe, convenient
transport of 3 to a maximum of 4 pairs
of skis (BMW Convertible, maximum of
2 pairs of skis).
The length of the ski bag in combination
with the additional space in the luggage
compartment makes it possible to trans-
port skis of up to 6.8 ft. (2.10 m) in
length. Because the ski bag contracts
as additional skis are inserted, the bag
is suitable for transporting only two
pairs of skis when both are a maximum
of 6.8 ft. (2.10 m) long.
If the ski bag is not used for longer peri-
ods, it should be stored in a dry place.
It is advisable to wipe off any water
which has collected on the waterproof
ski bag from time to time.
a
The ski bag must not hinder the
driver during driving.c
