(e) Place matchmarks on the transmission companion
flange and propeller shaft flange.
(f) Remove the 4 washers and nuts.
(g) Remove the 2 center support bearing set bolts and ad-
justing washers.
HINT:
Some vehicles are not equipped with and adjusting washer.
NOTICE:
When removing the set bolts, support the center support
bearing by hand so that the transmission and intermediate
shaft, and propeller shaft and differential, remain in a
straight line.
(h) Remove the propeller shaft from the transmission.
(i) Push the rear propeller shaft straight forward to compress
the propeller shaft and pull out the propeller shaft from the
centering pin of the differential.
NOTICE:
Press the propeller shaft straight ahead to keep the trans-
mission and intermediate shaft aligned straight.
(j) Pull the propeller shaft out toward the vehicle's rear.
NOTICE:
The intermediate shaft and propeller shaft should not be
separated.

5. INSPECT FUEL RECEIVER GAUGE OPERATION
(a) Disconnect the connector from the sender gauge assem-
bly.
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON, check that the receiver gauge
needle indicates EMPTY.
(c) Connect terminals 2 and 3 on the wire harness side con-
nector through a 3.4 W test bulb.
(d) Turn the ignition switch ON, and check that the bulb lights
up and that receiver gauge needle moves toward the full
side.
HINT:
Because of the silicon oil in the gauge, it will take a short time
for the needle to stabilize.
If operation is not as specified, inspect the receiver gauge resis-
tance.

CEIVER GAUGE OPERATION
(a) Disconnect the connector from the sender gauge.
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON, check that the receiver gauge
needle indicates COOL.
(c) Ground terminal on the wire harness side connector
through a 3 W test bulb.
(d) Turn the ignition switch ON, check that the bulb lights up
and that the receiver gauge needle moves toward the hot
side.
If operation is as specified, replace the sender gauge.
Then recheck the system.
If operation is not as specified, measure the receiver gauge re-
sistance.
11. INSPECT ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE RE-
CEIVER GAUGE RESISTANCE
Measure the resistance between terminals.
HINT:
Connect the test leads so that the current from the ohmmeter
can flow according to the chart order.
Between terminalsResistance (W)
A - BApprox. 229.7
A - CApprox. 54.0
B - CApprox. 175.7
If resistance value is not as specified, replace the engine cool-
ant temperature receiver gauge.
12. INSPECT ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SEND-
ER GAUGE RESISTANCE
Measure the resistance between terminal and gauge body.
Temperature °C (°F)Resistance (W)
50 (122.0)160 ~ 240
120 (248.0)17.1 ~ 21.2
If resistance value is not as specified, replace the engine cool-
ant temperature sender gauge.

(a) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(b) Turn the defogger switch ON.
(c) Inspect the voltage at the center of each heat wire, as
shown.
VoltageCriteria
Approx. 5VOkay (No break in wire)
Approx. 10V or 0VBroken wire
HINT:
If there is approximately 10 V, the wire is broken between the
center of the wire and the positive (+) end. If there is no voltage,
the wire is broken between the center of the wire and ground.
(d) Place the voltmeter positive (+) lead against the defogger
positive (+) terminal.
(e) Place the voltmeter negative (-) lead with the foil strip
against the heat wire at the positive (+) terminal end and
slide it toward the negative (-) terminal end.
(f) The point where the voltmeter deflects from zero to sever-
al V is the place where the heat wire is broken.
HINT:
If the heat wire is not broken, the voltmeter indicates 0 V at the
positive (+) end of the heat wire but gradually increases to about
12 V as the meter probe is moved to the other end.
5. IF NECESSARY, REPAIR DEFOGGER WIRE
(a) Clean the broken wire tips with a grease, wax and silicone
remover.
(b) Place the masking tape along both sides of the wire to be
repaired.
(c) Thoroughly mix the repair agent (DuPont paste No.
4817).

INSTALLATION
INSTALL ANTENNA ROD
(a) Insert the cable of the rod until it reaches the bottom.
HINT:
When inserting the cable, the teeth on the cable must face
toward the rear of the vehicle.
Insert the cable approx. 400 mm.
(b) Wind the cable to retract the rod by turning the ignition
switch to ºLOCKº position.
HINT:
If the ignition switch is already in ºLOCKº position, do step
1 (c) first, then turn the ignition switch to ºACCº position.
In case the cable is not wound, twist it as shown in the il-
lustration.
Even if the rod has not retracted fully, install the antenna
nut and inspect the antenna rod operation. It will finally re-
tract fully.
(c) Inspect the antenna rod operation by pushing the radio
wave band select buttons.

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. CHECK FUEL PUMP OPERATION
(a) Connect the TOYOTA hand-held tester to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON and TOYOTA hand-held tes-
ter main switch ON.
NOTICE:
Do not start the engine.
(c) Select the ACTIVE TEST mode on the TOYOTA hand-
held tester.
(d) Please refer to the TOYOTA hand-held tester operator's
manual for further details.
(e) If you have no TOYOTA hand-held tester, connect the
positive (+) and negative (-) leads from the battery to the
fuel pump connector.
(See step 8)
(f) Check that there is pressure in the fuel inlet hose from the
fuel filter.
HINT:
If there is fuel pressure, you will hear the sound of fuel flowing.
If there is no pressure, check the following parts:
Fuses
EFI No.2 relay
Fuel pump
ECM
Wiring connections
(g) Turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
(h) Disconnect the TOYOTA hand- held tester from the
DLC3.
2. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE
(a) Check the battery voltage is above 12 V.
(b) Disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the bat-
tery.
(c) Remove the union bolt and 2 gaskets, disconnect the fuel
inlet hose from the fuel filter.
CAUTION:
Put a suitable container or shop towel under the fuel
filter.
Slowly loosen the union bolt.
(d) Install the fuel inlet hose and SST (pressure gauge) to the
fuel filter with the 3 gaskets and SST (union bolt).
