While the vehicle is being driven, all ve-
hicle
occupants should have the seatback
upright, sit well back in the seat and prop-
erly wear the seat belt provided.
CAUTION
Do not drive unless the occupants
are properly seated. Do not allow
sitting on top of a folded-down
seatback, or in the luggage
compartment. Per sons not proper-
ly seated and not properly re-
strained by seatbelts can be se-
verely injured in the event of emer-
gency braking or a collision.
During driving, do not allow pas-
sengers to stand up or move
around between seats. Severe in-
juries can occur in the event of emergency braking or a collision.!
Adjust the driver's seat so that the foor
pedals, steering wheel and instrument
panel controls are within easy reach of the
driver.
CAUTION
Adjustments should not be made
while the vehicle is moving, as the
seat may unexpectedly move and
cause the driver to lose control of
the vehicle.
When adjusting the seat, be careful not to hit the seat against a passen- ger or luggage.
After adjusting the seat position, try sliding it forward and backward
to make sure it is locked in posi-tion.
After adjusting the seatback, exert
body pressure to make sure it is
locked in position.
Do not put objects under the seats
as they may interfere with the seat-
lock mechanism or unexpectedly
push up the seat position adjusting
lever; the seat may suddenly move,
causing the driver to lose control of
the vehicle.
While adjusting the seat, do not put
your hands under the seat or near
the moving parts. You may catch
and injure your hands or fingers.!

CAUTION!
The SRS airbag system is designed
only as a supplement to the prima-
ry protection of the driver side
aseat belt systems. The driver is
particularly susceptible to death orserious injury if they does not wear
their seat belt; when sudden brak-
ing or a collision occurs, they may
be thrown forward. To obtain a
maximum protection in an acci-
dent, the driver and all passengers
in the vehicle should always wear
their seat belts when driving be- cause serious injuries can result to
unrestrained occupants. For in-
structions and precautions con-
cerning the seat belt system, see
Seat beltsº in this chapter.
A baby or small child who is too
small to use a seat belt should be
properly secured in a rear seat us- ing a child restraint system.
Never use a rear-facing child re-
straint system in the front seat be- cause the force of the rapid infla-
tion of the passenger airbag can cause severe injury to the child.
Vehicles with a passenger airbag
display a caution label on the pas-
senger side instrument panel as
shown above to remind you not to install a rear-facing child restraint
system on the front seat at any time.If you must use a forward-facing
child restraint system in the front seat, the seat must be moved as far
back as possible. For instructions
concerning the installation of a
child restratint system, see Child
restraintº in this chapter.

Fan speed selector Push HIº (increase) or LOº (decrease) button to adjust fan speed.
Temperature selector
Move the lever to adjust the temperature Ðto the right to warm, to the left to cool.
Air flow selector
Press
the buttons to select the vents used
for air flow.
1. PanelÐ Air flows mainly from the in-
strument panel vents.
2. Bi-levelÐ Air flows from both the floor
vents and the instrument panel vents.
3. FloorÐ Air flows mainly from the floor
vents.
4. Floor/WindshieldÐ Air flows mainly
from the floor vents and windshield vents.
5. WindshieldÐ Air flows mainly from
the windshield vents. For details about air flow selector settings, see the illustration after A/Cº button.
Vehicles with A/Cº button indicatorÐ
Pressing the windshield button with the
fan speed selector on turns on the defrost-
er-linked
air conditioning. At this time, the
A/Cº button indicator comes on regard- less of whether or not the A/Cº button is pressed in. This is to clear up the front
view more quickly. When the A/Cº button is not pressed in,
pressing another air flow button turns offthe air conditioning.

Defrosting The outside of the windshield For best results, set controls to:
Fan speed -Any setting except OFFº
Temperature - Towards WARM
(red zone)
Air intake -FRESH (outside air)
Air flow -WINDSHIELD Air conditioning -ON
On models with air conditioning, pressing
the air flow button of this position turns onthe air conditioning. This is to clear up the
front view more quickly. Pushing another
air flow button turns off the air condition-ing. To heat the vehicle interior while de-
frosting the windshield, choose floor/
windshield air flow.
If air flow control is not satisfactory, check the instrument panel vents. The instru-
ment panel vents may be opened or
closed as shown.

The digital clock indicates the time
with the ignition key at the ACCº or
ONº position. To reset the hour, de-
press the
Hº button. To reset the min-
utes, depress the Mº button. To ad-
just the time to a full hour, depress the
:00º button.
For example, if the :00 button is de-
pressed when the time is between
1:01-1:29, the time will change to 1:00.
If the time is between 1:30-1:59, the time
will change to 2:00. When the instrument panel lights are turned on, the brightness of the time indi-
cation will be reduced.
Once the electrical power source has
been disconnected from the clock, the
time is automatically set to 1:00 (one o'clock).To operate the cigarette lighter, press it in. When it becomes heated, it au- tomatically pops out ready for use.
If the engine is not running, the key must be in the ACCº position.
Do not hold the cigarette lighter pressed in. When finished with your cigarette, thor-
oughly extinguish it in the ashtray to pre-
vent other cigarette butts from catching
fire. After using the ashtray, push it back
in completely.
To remove the ashtray, press down on the lock spring plate and pull out.
Use a Toyota genuine cigarette lighter or equivalent for replacement.
