Press and hold the appropriate button on the universal
transmitter.
The red light comes on while the signal is
being transmitted.
Note
that the effective transmission range of the
universal transmitter may differ from the hand-held
transmitter
and from one channel to another.
Erasing Channels
To erase all three programmed channels. hold down
the two outside buttons
until the red light begins to
flash. Individual channels cannot be erased, but can be
reprogrammed using the procedure for programming the transmitter explained earlier.
Training a Garage Opener with a “Rolling
Code” Feature
If you programmed the universal transmitter, but the
garage door
will not open. and if your garage door opener
was manufactured after
1995, your garage door may have
a security feature that changes the ”code” of your garage
door opener every time
it is opened or closed.
To determine if your garage door opener has this
“rolling code” feature, press the appropriate button on
the universal transmitter that was programmed.
If the
red light flashes rapidly for
one to two seconds. then
turns solid, your ,oarage door opener
has this feature.
To program a garage door opener with the rolling code
feature, do the following:

Program your hand-held transmitter to the universal
transmitter by following the steps provided under
“Programming
the Transmitter“ earlier in this section.
Remove the cover panel from the garage door opener
receiver.
It is located near the garage door opener motor.
Locate the training button on the garage door opener
receiver. The exact location and color will vary
among brands.
Press the training button on the garage door opener
receiver for one to two seconds.
Return to your vehicle and press the programmed
button on the universal transmitter until the red light
flashes rapidly (about two seconds).
Release the button. then repress it to confirm
it was
programmed to
the garage door opener receiver.
You may now use either
the universal transmitter or
the hand-held transmitter to open your garage door.

assistance, please
call 1-800-355-35 15.

code matches the secret code
you ha\;e written down.
The display will show REP to Ict you
know that you
need to repeat Steps 5 through 7 to confirm your
secret code.
Unlocking the Theft-Deterrent Feature After a
Power
Loss
Enter your secret code as follows: pause no more than
I5 seconds between steps:
1. LOC appears when the ignition is on.
2. Press MN and 000 cvill appear on the display.
3. Press MN again to lnake the last two digits agree
with your code.
4. Press HR to make the first one or two digits agree
with your code.
5. Press AM-FM after you have confirmed that the
code matches the secret code
~OLI have written down
The display will show SEC, indicating the radio is
now operable and secure.
If ~OLI enter the wrong code eight times, INOP will
appear on the display. You will have to wait an hour
with the ignition on before yo11 can try apin. When you
try asain. you will only have three chances to enter the
correct code before
lNOP appears.
If you lose or forger your code. contact your dealer.

no longer secured.
If the code entered is incorrect, SEC will appear on the
display. The radio will remain secured until
the correct
code is entered.
When battery power is removed and later applied
to a
secured radio, the radio won’t turn
on and LOC will
appear
on the display. To
unlock a secured radio,
see “Unlocking the
Theft-Deterrent Feature After
a Power Loss” earlier in
this section.
Understanding Radio Reception
FM Stereo
FM stereo will give you the best sound. But FM signals
will reach only about 10 to 40 miles (16 to 65 km). Tall
buildings or hills can interfere with
FM signals, causing
the sound to come and go.
AM
The range for most AM stations is greater than for FM,
especially at night. The longer range, however, can
cause stations to interfere with each other.
AM can pick
up noise from things like storms and power lines. Try
reducing
the treble to reduce this noise if you ever get it.
Tips About Your Audio System
Hearing damage from loud noise is almost undetectable
until it is too late. Your hearing can adapt to higher
volumes
of sound. Sound that seems normal can be loud
and harmful to your hearing. Take precautions by
adjusting the volume control on your radio to
a safe
sound level before your hearing adapts
to it.

If your vehicle doesn‘t have four-wheel drive, you
shouldn‘t drive off-road unless you‘re on a level,
solid surface.
Off-road driving can be great
fun. But it does have some
definite hazards. The greatest
of these is the terrain itself.
“Off-roading” means
you’ve left the great North
American road
system behind. Traffic lanes aren‘t
marked. Curves aren’t banked. There are
no road signs.
Surfaces can be slippery. rough, uphill
or downhill. In
short. you’ve gone right back to nature.
Off-road driving involves some new skills. And that’s
why it’s very important that you read this guide. You’ll
find many driving tips and suggestions. These will help
make your off-road driving safer and more enjoyable.
Before You Go Off-Roading
There are sutfre things to do before you go out. For
example, be sure
to have all necessary maintenance and
service work done. Check
to make sure all underbody
shields
(if so equipped) are properly attached. Be sure
you read all the information about your
four-wheel-drive vehicle
in this manual. Is there enough
fuel?
Is the spare tire fully inflated? Are the fluid levels
up where they should be? What are
the local laws that
apply to off-roading where you’ll be driving? If
you
don’t know, you should check with law enforcement
people
in the area. Will you be on someone’s private
land?
If so, be sure to get the necessary permission.
Loading Your Vehicle for Off-Road Driving
There are some important things to remember about
how
to load your vehicle.
The heaviest things should be on the load floor and
forward of your rear axle. Put heavier items as far
forward
as you can.
Be sure the load is secured properly, so driving on
the off-road terrain doesn’t toss things around.

Cargo on the load floor piled higher than
the seatbacks can be thrown forward
during a sudden
stop. You or your
passengers could
be injured. Keep cargo

the top of the seatbacks.
Unsecured cargo on the load floor can
tossed about when driving over rough terrain. You or your passengers can be
struck by flying objects. Secure the
cargo properly.
Heavy loads on the roof raise the vehicle's
center
of gravity, making it more likely to
roll over. You can be seriously or fatally

if the vehicle rolls over. Put heavy
loads inside the cargo area, not on the roof.
Keep cargo
in the cargo area as far forward
and low as possible.

Environmental Concerns
Off-road driving can provide whoIesome and satisfying
recreation. However.
it also raises environmental
concerns.
GM recognizes these concerns and urges
every off-roader
to follow these basic rules for
protectins the environment:
Always use established trails, roads and areas that
have been specially set aside
for public off-road
recreational drivihg; obey all posted regulations.
0 Avoid any driving practice that could damage the
environment
-- shrubs. flowers. trees, grasses -- or
disturb wildlife
(this includes wheel-spinning,
breaking down trees
or unnecessary driving through
streams or over
soft ground).
0 Always carry a litter bag . . . make sure all refuse is
removed from any campsite before leaving.
Take extreme care with open fires (where permitted).
camp stoves and lanterns.
0 Never park your vehicle over dry grass or other
cotnbustible materials that could catch fire

Is there actually such a condition as “highway hypnosis”?
Or is it just plain falling asleep at the wheel? Call it
highway hypnosis, lack
of awareness, or whatever.
There is something about
an easy stretch of road with
the same scenery, along with the hum of the tires on the
road, the drone
of the engine, and the rush of the wind
against the vehicle that can make
you sleepy. Don’t let it
happen
to you! If it does, your vehicle can leave the
road in less than a secund, and you could crash and
be injured.
What can
you do about highway hypnosis? First, be
aware that
it can happen.
Then here are
some tips:

Make sure your vehicle is well ventilated, with a
comfortably cool interior.
Keep your eyes moving. Scan the road ahead and
to the sides. Check your mirrors and your
instruments frequently.
If you Sct dwpy. pull off the road into a rest, service
or
parking xe;L and take a nap, get some exercise, or
both. For safety. treat drowsiness on the highway as
an
emergency.
Hill and Mountain Roads

Driving on steep hills or mountains is different from
driving
in flat or rolling terrain.
If you drive regularly in steep country, or if you’re
planning
to visit there, here are some tips that can make
your trips safer and more enjoyable. (See “Off-Road
Driving’’ in the Index for information about driving
off-road.)

Here are some tips for winter driving:
Have your vehicle in good shape for winter.
0 You may want to put winter emergency supplies in
your vehicle. Include an ice scraper,
a small
brush or broom, a supply
of windshield washer fluid, a rag, some winter outer
clothing, a small shovel,
a flashlight, a red cloth and
reflective warning triangles. And, if you will be driving
under severe conditions, include a
small bag of sand, a
piece of old carpet or a couple of burlap bags to help
provide traction. Be
sure you properly secure these
items in your vehicle.
Driving on Snow or Ice
Most of the time, those places where your tires meet the
road probably have good traction.
However, if there is snow or ice between your tires and
the road, you can have a very slippery situation.
You’ll
have a lot less traction or “grip” and will need to be
very careful.

This is the maximum load capacity that your
vehicle
can carry. Be sure to include the weight of the
occupants as part
of your load. If you added any
accessories or equipment after your vehicle
left the
factory, remember
to subtract the weight of these things
from
the payload. Your dealer can help you with this.
Add-on Equipment
When you carry removable items, you may need to put a
limit on how many people you carry inside your vehicle.
Be sure to weigh your vehicle before ~OLI buy and install
the new equipment.
