Replacing headlight wiper blades (certain models)

Pull the wiper blade in the direction indicated by the arrow in illustra\
tion to remove it. Press the new
blade into place. Check that the new blade is properly attached to the w\
iper arm.

Cleaning the outside of the wiper blades

If the windshield/tailgate is not clear after using the wiper(s) or if\
the blade chatters when running, wax
or other material may be on the blade or on the surface of the glass.
Clean the glass with a suitable cleaning agent. The glass is clean if be\
ads do not form when you rinse it
with water.
Clean the wiper blade by wiping vigorously with a cloth soaked in full s\
trength windshield washer
solvent. Then rinse the blade with water.

Shiftlock release (automatic transmission only)

The gear selector is locked in the (P)ark position. To manually releas\
e the shiftlock:
l Turn the starting (ignition) key to position I
l Press firmly on the "SHIFTLOCK OVERRIDE" button located to the right of \
the base of the gear
selector
l While holding the override button down, press the button on the front of\
the gear selector
l Move the selector from the ( P )ark position.


Fuel tank cover does not open

Faulty motor in fuel tank cover
(Sedans):
Open the cover panel on the right tail light unit and pull on the hook. \

The fuel tank cover can then be opened.
(Wagons):

Remove the right floor cover (the center storage compartment must be op\
ened first) and the cover panel
on the right lower tail light. Pull on the hook and the fuel tank cover \
can then be opened.

Car care

Car care includes not only maintaining the appearance of the car, but al\
so protecting the car exterior
from the effects of air pollution, rain, mud or road salt. The rustproof\
ing compound under the car should
be checked regularly and, if necessary, damaged areas should be repaired\
. The paintwork should also be
touched up immediately, if damaged, to prevent rust formation.

Paint touch-up

Paint damage requires immediate attention to avoid rusting. Make it a ha\
bit to check the finish regularly
- when washing the car for instance. Touch up if necessary.

Paint repairs require special equipment and skill. Contact your Volvo re\
tailer for any extensive damage.

Minor scratches can be repaired by using Volvo touch-up paint.

NOTE: When ordering touch-up paint from your Volvo retailer, use the pai\
nt code indicated on the
model plate. The plate is located on the panel above the right-side head\
lights.

Washing the car

l The car should be washed at regular intervals since dirt, dust, insects \
and tar spots adhere to the paint
and may cause damage.

NOTE: It is particularly important to wash the car frequently in the win\
tertime to prevent corrosion,
when salt has been used on the roads.

l When washing the car, do not expose it to direct sunlight. Use lukewarm \
water to soften the dirt
before you wash with a sponge, and plenty of water, to avoid scratching.\

l A detergent can be used to facilitate the softening of dirt and oil.
l A water-soluble grease solvent may be used in cases of sticky dirt. Howe\
ver, use a washplace
equipped with a drainage separator.
l Dry the car with a clean chamois and remember to clean the drain holes i\
n the doors and rocker
panels.
l The power radio antenna (sedans) must be dried after washing.
l Tar spots can be removed with kerosene or tar remover after the car has \
been washed.
l A stiff-bristle brush and lukewarm soapy water can be used to clean the \
wiper blades. Frequent
cleaning improves visibility considerably.

quired to pay for labor and

The following precautions must be observed when carrying out repairs to \
the vehicle
WARNING! The distributor ignition system operates at very high voltages.\
Special safety precautions
must be followed to prevent injury. Always turn the ignition off when:
l Connecting engine test and diagnostic equipment to the vehicle (timing \
light, tach-dwell tester,
ignition oscilloscope, etc.).
l Replacing distributor ignition components e.g. plugs, coil, etc.
l Do not touch any part of the distributor ignition system while the engin\
e is running. This may result
in unintended movements and body injury.

Battery

l Check that the battery cables are correctly connected and properly tight\
ened.
l Never disconnect the battery when the engine is running, for example whe\
n changing the battery.
l The battery should be disconnected when a boost charger is used.
l Switch off the radio before disconnecting the battery. If your radio has\
an anti-theft code and the
battery is disconnected, the radio code has to be re-entered in order fo\
r the radio to function.

Replacing spark plugs

The spark plugs should be changed every 30,000 miles (48,000 km). Howe\
ver, city driving or fast
highway driving may necessitate changing after 15,000 miles (24,000 km)\
of driving. When installing
new plugs, be sure to fit the right type and use correct torque, see "Sp\
ecifications". When changing the
plugs, check that the suppressor connectors are in good condition. Crack\
ed or damaged connectors
should be replaced. When changing the spark plugs, clean the terminals a\
nd the rubber seals.

Hoisting the car

If a garage jack is used to lift the car, the two jack attachments point\
s should be used. They are specially
reinforced to bear the weight of the car. A garage jack can also be plac\
ed under the front of the engine
