Transfer shift lever operation
(Vehicles equipped with manual

1 . Set the manual free-wheeling hubs to "LOCK" position.

Jos ajoneuvo on varustettu napalukoilla, sijaitsevat ne etupyorissa.
Asettamalla napal·ukot "FREE" asentoon valitsimen ollessa "2H" asennossa, voidaan voimansiirto etupyoriin katkaista, jolloin ajo tulee seka taloudellisemmaksi etta aanet­
tomammaksi .
Asettamalla taas navat "LOCK " asentoon valitsimen ollessa
" 4H " tai
"4L" asennossa, siirtyy voima myos etupyoriin.

NOTE Shifting from 4H to 2H does not immediately unlock the hubs.
To unlock the hubs , follow the procedure described in TO UNLOCK TH E HUBS in the section" Automatic free -wheeling hubs". (See page 145.)
Free-wheeling hubs* EI05A ·A
If the vehicle is equipped with free-wheeling hubs, they are
located on the front wheels. By setting the free wheeling hubs to the "FREE" position when the shift lever is in the "2H" position, the drive power of the front drive line for the front wheels can be discontinued, thus
resulting in more economical operation in addition to reduced
noise. By setting the free-wheeling hubs to the "LOCK" position when the shift lever is in either the "4H" position or the "4L" position, the drive power of the front drive line can be trans­mitted to the front wheels.

(2) Mikali, nelipyaravedon aikana, ajoneuvo sattuu juuttumaan ja on irrotettava edestakaisin heilutta­malia, saattavat navat vapautua lukostaan taakse­paisen liikkeen johdosta. Jos taman jalkeen viela moottoria ylikiihdytetaan tai kytkin paastetaan liian nopeasti ylas, saattavat navat jaada lukittu­matta, jolloin seurauksena on vaihteitten kirskuva aani, tama ei suinkaan ole merkki toiminta­hairiasta. & CAUTION (1) Even if automatic free-wheeling hubs are left locked during rear-wheel drive, they will be un­locked if the vehicle is reversed during starting on an uphill grade, a U-turn, etc. If this happens, the transfer shift lever cannot be moved to the "4H" position during driving; the vehicle must first be completely stopped. (2) If, during four-wheel drive operation, the vehicle becomes stuck and a back-and-forth rocking mo­tion is used to free it, the automatic free-wheeling hubs may become unlocked because of the back­ward movement. If the engine is subsequently revved up and the clutch let out suddenly, the automatic free-wheeling hubs may not lock, and a noise of grinding gears will be heard, however, this is not a malfunction. In addition, if in this condition the accelerator pedal is released slightly and then depressed again, the automatic free-wheeling hubs will lock, but when they do, the vehicle may jerk forward sud­denly. Depress the accelerator pedal gradually, and let the clutch out slowly and smoothly. (3) The automatic free-wheeling hubs may emit un­usual noises when driving at "2H" in cold weather; if this happens, drive for a while in four-wheel drive to warm up the transfer and then shift to "2H". (4) When used while turning, it may not come free in some cases. If this happens, drive straight ahead and try again. .

Ajettaessa nelipybriivedolla huonoilla teilla (Iumessa , mudassa ,
hiekalla jne.) on tarkeiiii ajaa ajoneuvoa oikein.

Correct four-wheel drive operation fl32A·,
By shifting to four-wheel drive, the both axles of the vehicle are rigidly connected with each other. This improves the traction
charac teristics . When turning sharp corners or moving forward and backward repeatedly, however, the drive line is stressed, which is felt as a braking effect. A four-wheel drive vehicle can
acce lerate more quickly and smoothly.
H owever, note that the braking distance is not shorter than that
o f a two-wheel drive vehicle.
When using four-wheel drive on rough roads (snow, mud, sand, etc .) , it is important to operate the vehicle correctly .
NOTE
After driving on rough roads, c h
eck each part of the vehicle and
wash it thoroughly with water. Refer to the "Vehicle care"
sectio n.
Driving on snowy or icy roads
Set the transfer shift lever to "4HLc" or "4H " (Super select 4WD) or "4H" (Part time 4WD) 111 accordance with the road
conditions, and then graduall y depress the accelerator pedal for
a smooth start.
NOTE (1) The use of
snow tyres and/or tyre chains is recommended.
(2) Maintain a safe distanc e between vehicles, avoid sudden
braking , and use engine braking (downshifting). (3) Avoid sudden braking, sudde n acceleration , and sharp turning; such operations could cause skidding and spinouts.

Driving on sandy or muddy roads
Set the transfer shift lever to "4LLc" (Super select 4WO) or "4L" (Part time 4WO), and then gradually depress the acceler­
ator pedal
for a smooth start. Keep the pressure on the
accelerator pedal as constant as possible, and drive at low speed.
NOTE (1) Avoid sudden braking, acceleration , and turning; such operations could resu lt in the vehic le becoming stuck. (2) If it is necessary to drive in extremely muddy conditions, the use of tyre chains is recomme nded. (3) If the vehicle becomes stuck, place stones , tree branches ,
etc. under the tyres to provide traction, or rock the vehicle back and forth to get it loose . (4) Because the extent of muddy conditions is difficult to judge and the vehicle could become bogged down very
deeply, operation should be at a low speed . If possible , get out of the vehicle and check the conditions ahead before
proceeding .
& CAUTION Driving over roads in coastal areas or roads on which anti-skid preparations have been spread can cause rust on the vehicle; wash the vehicle thoroughly as soon as
possible after such use.

Joen ylitys
Nelipyoravetoiset ajoneuvot eivat valttamatta ole vedenpitavia. Jos niiden sahkopiirit paasevat kastumaan , kay ajaminen mah ­dottomaksi, joten valttakaa jokien ylittamista mikali mahdollista. Mikali sita ei voida valttaa toimikaa se uraavasti :

Turning sharp corners < Except "4H" (Super select
4WO»
When turning a sharp corner in four-wheel drive , the same
thing that happens w hen doing so with the brake applied may occur. This is call e d tight corne r braking, and results from each of the four ty res being at a different distance from the corner.
Th e phenomenon is peculiar to four-wheel drive vehicles. If this occurs, either str aighten out the steering wheel, or change to two- w he el drive.
Crossing a stream
Four-w heel drive ve hicles are not necessarily waterproof. If the
e lectr ical c ircu it s become wet, further operation of t he vehicle will be impossib le ; therefore , avoid crossi ng streams unless absolutely necessary. If crossing a stream is unavoidable, us e
th e following procedure:
( 1 ) Cross at a place where the
water is less than 50 cm (1 .6 ft.)
deep .
(2) Set the transfe r shift lever to "4LLc" (Super select 4WD) or "4L" (Part time 4WD).
(3) Drive slowly at a sp eed of approximately 5 km/h (3 mph) to avoid sp lashing too much water,
