Walter Marr and Thomas Buick
Buick’s chief engineer, Walter L. Marr (left), and
Thomas
D. Buick, son of founder David Dunbar Buick,
drove the first Flint Buick in a successful Flint-Detroit
round trip in July 1904.
David Buick was building gasoline engines by 1899,
and Marr, his engineer, apparently built
the first auto to
be called a Buick in 1900. However, Buick traditionally
dates its beginnings to 1903. That was the year the
company was reorganized, refinanced and moved
from
Detroit to Flint. Buick has always been a product
innovator. Buick engineers developed the “valve-in-head”
engine, a light, powerful and reliable
engine which would eventually influence the entire
automotive industry.
William
C. Durant was instrumental in promoting
Buicks across the country using his Durant-Dort
Carriage Co. outlets and salespeople as the nucleus
of a
giant distribution system. He knew the Buick as a
“self-seller”. If automobiles could be this good, he
thought, maybe it was time to switch from the horse and
buggy business to automobiles.
At the 1905, New York
Auto Show, Durant took
orders for
1,000 Buicks
before
the company had
built 40. On Buick’s
’ . success, Durant created a
holding company,

called it General Motors.

This figure lights up when you turn the key to “Run” or
“Start” when your safety belt isn’t buckled, and you’ll
hear a tone, too. It’s the reminder to buckle up.
In many states and Canadian provinces, the law says to
wear safety belts. Here’s why: They work.
You never know if you’ll be in a crash. If you do have a
crash, you don’t know if it will be a bad one.
A few crashes are very mild. In them, you won’t get hurt
even if you’re not buckled up. And some crashes can be
so serious, like being hit by a train, that even buckled up
a person wouldn’t survive. But most crashes are
in
between. In many of them, people who buckle up can
survive and sometimes walk away. Without belts they
could be badly hurt
or killed. After
25 years of safety belts in vehicles, the
facts are
clear.
In most crashes buckling up does matter ... a lot!

Safety Belt Reminder Light
When the key is turned to “Run” or “Start,” a light will
come
on for about eight seconds to remind people to
fasten their safety belts. Unless the driver’s safety belt is
buckled,
a tone will also sound.

Supplemental Inflatable Restraint
System/Supplemental Restraint System (Air
Bag)
This section explains the driver’s Supplemental
Inflatable Restraint (SIR)/Supplemental Restraint
System (SRS) system, commonly referred to
as an air
bag. Here are the most important things to
know:
Even with an aSr bag, if you’re not wearing a
safety belt and you’re [in a crash, your injuries
may be much worse.
Air bags are not designed
to inflate in rollovers or in rear, side or low-speed
I frontal crashes. You need to wear your safety
belt to reduce the chance of hitting
things inside
the vehicle or being ejected from it. Always wear I
your safety belt, even with an air bag. ,I 1
I .,I.
I A CAUTION:
Air bags inflate with great force, faster than the
blink
of an eye. If you’re too close to an inflating
air
bag, it could seriously injure you. Safety belts
help keep you in position for an air bag inflation
in a crash. Always wear your safety belt, even
with an air bag, and sit as far back as you can
while
still maintaining control of your vehicle.
There is an air bag readiness light on the instrument
panel, which shows “INFL REST” or “INFLATABLE
RESTRAINT.” The system checks itself and the light
tells you
if there is a problem.

You will see this light flash for a few seconds when you
turn your ignition to
“Run” or “Start.” Then the light
should
go out, which means the system is ready.

If the air bag readiness light doesn’t come on
when you start your vehicle, or stays on, or comes on when you are driving, your air
bag
system may not work properly. Have your vehicle
serviced right away. ’

How The Air Bag System Works
Where is the air bag?
The driver’s air bag is in the middle of the steering
wheel.
When is an air bag expected to inflate?
The air bag is designed to inflate in moderate to severe
frontal or near-frontal crashes. The air bag will only
inflate if the velocity
of the impact is above the designed

Avoid wires wrapped with yellow tape, or yellow
connectors. They are probably part of the air bag
system.
But if the ignition has to be on for electrical work, or if
the steering column is to be disassembled, the air bag
system must be disconnected.
To do this:
Turn off the ignition.
Remove the SIR/SRS (air bag) fuse (see “Fuses and
Circuit Breakers” in the Index).
Disconnect the yellow connector at the base of the

Safety Belt Use During Pregnancy
Safety belts work for everyone, including pregnant
women. Like all occupants, they are more likely to be
seriously injured if they don’t wear safety belts. A
pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and
the lap portion should be worn
as low as possible
throughout the pregnancy.

The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the
mother. When
a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more
likely that the fetus won’t be
hurt in a crash. For
pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making
safety belts effective is wearing them properly.
