The front doors can be opened by
pulling the inside ha ndle even if the
lock buttons are in the lock position.
■Locking the front doors from
the outside without a key
1 Move the inside lock button to
the lock position.
2 Close the door.
The door cannot be locked if the
power switch is in ACC or ON, or
the electronic key is left inside the
vehicle. However, the key may not
be detected correctly and the door may be locked.
■Open door warning buzzer
If a door is not fully closed, a buzzer
will sound when the vehicle speed
reaches 3 mp h (5 km/h).
The open door(s) is indicated on the
multi-information display.
The door cannot be opened
from inside the vehicle when the
lock is set.

These locks can be set to prevent
children from opening the rear
doors. Push down on each rear
door switch to lock both rear doors.

Power running boards*
The power running boards
deploy when opening a door
or by using the switch
inside the vehicle.
The power running boards
stow by closing a door,
operating the switch inside
the vehicle, or by driving 3
mph (5 km/h) or higher.
WARNING
■Cautions regarding the power
running boards
Observe the following precau-
tions.
Failure to do so may cause seri-
ous injury.
●Check to make sure that all pas-
sengers and people in the vehi-
cle’s surrounding area do not
have a hand on the boards or
any part of their body in a posi-
tion where it could be caught
between the boards and the
vehicle when the power running
boards is being operated.
●Confirm that the boards have
completely deployed or stowed
before getting in or out of the
vehicle. If someone gets in or
out of the vehicle during the
power running boards opera-
tion, the boards may stop
deploying or stowing.
●Take care when pressing the
power steps switch. The boards
will deploy or stow and may hit
other people or objects.

■Jam protection function
If a board contacts an obstacle
when deploying, it will stow. If an
obstacle gets caught between a
board and the vehicle when stow-
ing, the board will deploy.
If an obstacle is de tected 3 times in
a row during power running board
operation, the boar d will stop at the
position it contacts the obstacle.
When the side door on the same
side as the board is opened and
closed, or switch is operated once
the obstacle is cl eared, the board
will attempt to stow o r deploy again.
■Automatic stowing function
The boards will be automatically
stowed, for safety, under the follow-
ing conditions:
WARNING
●Always check that the power
steps switch is turned off when
cleaning the boards, before
jacking up or placing any object
under the vehicle, or if boards
are not operating correctly.
●Do not allow children to operate
the power running boards.
Operating the power running
boards so that the boards con-
tacts someone can cause seri-
ous injury, and in some
instances, even death.
■Jam protection function
Observe the following precau-
tions.
Failure to do so m ay cause seri-
ous injury.
Do not place any body part
between the boards and vehicle.
The jam protection function may
not work depending on the shape
of the object that is caught.

■Automatic stowing function
The boards will be automatically
stowed, for safety, under the follow-
ing condition:
●Vehicle speed is approximately 3
mph (5 km/h) or higher
Back door
The back door can be
locked/unlocked and
opened/closed by the fol-
lowing procedures.
WARNING
Observe the following precau-
tions.
Failure to do so may result in
death or serious injury.
■Before driving
●Make sure that the back door is
fully closed.
If the back door is not fully
closed, it may open unexpect-
edly while driving and hit near-
by objects or luggage in the lug-
gage compartment may be
thrown out, causing an acci-
dent.
●Do not allow child ren to play in
the luggage compartment.
If a child is accidentally locked
in the luggage compartment,
they could get heat exhaustion
or other injuries.
●Do not allow a child to open or
close the back door.
Doing so may cause the back
door to operate unexpectedly,
or cause the child’s hands,
head, or neck to be caught by
the closing back door.
■Important points while driving
●Keep the back door closed
while driving.
If the back door is left open, it
may hit near-by objects or lug-
gage in the luggage compart-
ment may be thrown out,
causing an accident.

WARNING
●Never let anyone sit in the lug-
gage compartment.
In the event of sudden braking,
sudden swerving or a collision,
they are susceptible to death or
serious injury.
■Back door handles
Do not hang any object to the
back door handles.
If any object is hung, the back
door may suddenly shut, causing
parts of the body to be caught,
resulting in death or serious injury.
■Operating the back door
Observe the following precau-
tions.
Failure to do so may cause parts
of the body to be caught, resulting
in death or serious injury.
●Remove any heavy loads, such
as snow and ice, from the back
door before opening it. Failure
to do so may cause the back
door to suddenly shut again
after it is opened.
●When opening or closing the
back door, thoroughly check to
make sure the surrounding area
is safe.
●If anyone is in the vicinity, make
sure they are safe and let them
know that the back door is
about to open or close.
●Use caution when opening or
closing the back door in windy
weather as it may move
abruptly in strong wind.
●Vehicles without power back
door: The back door may sud-
denly shut if it is not opened
fully. It is more difficult to open
or close the back door on an
incline than on a level surface,
so beware of the back door
unexpectedly opening or closing
by itself. Make sure that the
back door is fully open and
secure before using the luggage
compartment.
●Vehicles with power back door:
The back door may suddenly
shut if it is not opened fully,
while on a steep incline. Make
sure that the back door is
secured before using the lug-
gage compartment.
●When closing the back door,
take extra care to prevent your
fingers, etc. from being caught.
●Vehicles without power back
door: When closing the back
door, make sure to press it
lightly on its outer surface. If the
back door handle is used to fully
close the back door, it may
result in hands or arms being
caught.

seconds after the doors are locked.

Raise the back door while
pressing up the back door
opener switch.
WARNING
●Vehicles without power back
door: Do not pull on the back
door damper stay ( P.125) to
close the back door, and do not
hang on the back door damper
stay.
Doing so may cause hands to
be caught or the back door
damper stay to break, causing
an accident.
●Vehicles with power back door:
Do not pull on the back door
spindle ( P.134) to close the
back door, and do not hang on
the back door spindle.
Doing so may cause hands to
be caught or the back door spin-
dle to break, causing an acci-
dent.
●Vehicles without power back
door: If a bicycle carrier or simi-
lar heavy objec t is attached to
the back door, it may suddenly
shut again after being opened,
causing someone’s hands,
head or neck to be caught and
injured. When installing an
accessory part to the back door,
using a genuine Toyota part is
recommended.

Before driving
■Close
Lower the back door using the
back door handle, and make
sure to push the back door
down from the outside to close
it.
Be careful not to pull the back door
sideways when closing the back
door with the handle.
■Luggage compartment light
●The luggage compartment light
turns on when the back door is
opened.
●When the power switch is turned
to OFF, the ligh t will go off auto-
matically after 20 minutes.
■If the back door opener is inop-
erative
The back door can be unlocked
from the inside.
1 Remove the cover.
To prevent damage, cover the tip of
the screwdriver with a rag. 2
Move the lever.
3 When installing, reverse the
steps listed.

NOTICE
■Back door damper stays
The back door is equipped with
damper stays that hold the back
door in place.
Observe the following precau-
tions.
Failure to do so may cause dam-
age to the back door damper stay,
resulting in malfunction.
●Do not attach any foreign
objects, such as stickers, plastic
sheets, or adhesives to the
damper stay rod.

WARNING
■Back door closer
●In the event that the back door
is left slightly open, the back
door closer will automatically
close it to the fully closed posi-
tion. It takes several seconds
before the back door closer
begins to operate. Be careful
not to catch fingers or anything
else in the back door, as this
may cause bone fractures or
other serious injuries.
●Use caution when using the
back door closer as it still oper-
ates when the power back door
system is canceled.
■Power back door
Observe the following precautions
when operating the power back
door.
Failure to do so may cause death
or serious injury.
●Check the safety of the sur-
rounding area to make sure
there are no obs tacles or any-
thing that could cause any of
your belongings to get caught.
●If anyone is in the vicinity, make
sure they are safe and let them
know that the back door is
about to open or close.
WARNING
●If the power back door system is
turned off while the back door is
operating automatically, the
automatic operation is stopped.
The back door then has to be
operated manually. Take extra
care when on an incline, as the
back door may open or close
unexpectedly.
●If the operating conditions of the
power back door are no longer
met, a buzzer may sound and
the back door may stop opening
or closing. The back door then
has to be operated manually.
Take extra care when on an
incline, as the back door may
open or close abruptly.
●On an incline, the back door
may suddenly shut after it
opens. Make sure the back door
is fully open and secure.
