WARNING
The engine compartment contains many mechanisms and fluids that may move
suddenly, become hot, or become electrically energized. To avoid death or seri-
ous injury, observe the following precautions.
⬛When working on the engine compartment
⚫Keep hands, clothing and tools away from the moving fan and engine drive
belt.
⚫Be careful not to touch the engine, radiator, exhaust manifold, etc., right
after driving as they may be hot. O il and other fluids may also be hot.
⚫Do not leave anything that may burn easily, such as paper and rags, in the
engine compartment.
⚫Do not smoke, cause sparks or expose an open flame to fuel or the battery.
Fuel and battery fumes are flammable.
⚫Be extremely cautious when working on the battery. It contains poisonous
and corrosive sulfuric acid.
⚫Take care because brake fluid can harm your hands or eyes and damage
painted surfaces. If fluid gets on your hands or in your eyes, flush the
affected area with cl ean water immediately.
If you still experience discomfort, consult a doctor.
⬛When working near the electric cooling fan or radiator grille
Be sure the engine switch is in off.
With the engine switch in “ON”, the elect ric cooling fan may automatically start
to run if the air conditioning is on and/or the coolant temperature is high.
( ➞ P. 320)
⬛Safety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent flying or falling material, fluid spray, etc. from
getting in your eyes.
NOTICE
⬛If you remove the air cleaner filter
Driving with the air cleaner filter removed may cause excessive engine wear
due to dirt in the air.
⬛If the fluid level is low or high
It is normal for the brake fluid level to go down slightly as the brake pads wear
or when the fluid level in the accumulator is high.
If the reservoir needs frequent refilling, it may indicate a serious problem.

With the engine at operating temper ature and turned off, check the oil
level on the dipstick.
⬛Checking the engine oil
a Park the vehicle on level ground. After warming up the engine and
turning it off, wait more than 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the
bottom of the engine.
b Holding a rag under the end, pull the dipstick out.

c Wipe the dipstick clean.
d Reinsert the dipstick fully.

The shape of the dipstick may dif-
fer depending on the type of
vehicle or engine.

Engine coolant
The coolant level is satisfactory if it is between the “FULL” and “LOW” lines
on the reservoir when the engine is cold.
a Reservoir cap
b “FULL” line
c “LOW” line
If the level is on or below the “LOW”
line, add coolant up to the “FULL” line.
(➞ P. 412)
⬛Coolant selection
Only use “Toyota Super Long Life Coolan t” or a similar high quality ethylene
glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, and non-borate coolant with
long-life hybrid org anic acid technology.
“Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 50% coolant and 50% deion-
ized water. (Minimum temperature: -35°C [-31°F])
For more details about engine coolant, contact your Toyota Genuine dealer.
⬛If the coolant level drops within a short time of replenishing
Visually check the radiator, hoses, engine coolant reservoir cap, drain cock and
water pump.
If you cannot find a leak, have your Toyo ta dealer test the cap and check for
leaks in the cooling system.
WARNING
⬛When the engine is hot
Do not remove the radiator cap.
The cooling system may be under pressure and may spray hot coolant if the
cap is removed, causing seri ous injuries, such as burns.
⬛When replacing the coolant
To avoid coolant spilling on the altern ator, do not remove the upper radiator
hose from engine side (remove from the radiator side). Coolant spilled on the
alternator will cause corrosion of the coil and a fire.

If your vehicle overheats
The following may indicate that your vehicle is overheating:
⚫High coolant temperat ure warning light (➞P. 379) is flashing or lit in red
⚫Vehicles with TFT color multi-information display: “Engine Coolant
Temp High” warning message ( ➞P. 387) is displayed
⚫A loss of engine power is experienced (the vehicle cannot reach
higher speeds, etc.)
⚫Steam comes out from th e engine compartment
Measures to take
⬛The high coolant temperature warn ing light is flashing or lit
a Stop the vehicle in a safe place an d turn OFF the air conditioning sys-
tem, and then stop the engine
b If you see steam:
After making sure that the steam has stopped, carefully lift the hood
If you do not see steam:
Carefully lift the hood
c After the engine has cooled
down sufficiently, inspect the
hoses and radiator core (radiat-
ing part) for any leaks
aCooling fan
b Radiator
If a large amount of coolant has leaked,
immediately contact your Toyota
dealer.
d Check that the amount of coolant
in the reservoir tank is between

When trouble arises
7
eAdd coolant if necessary
Water can be used in an emergency if
coolant is unavailable.
fStart the engine and turn the air co nditioning system on to check that
the radiator cooling fan operates and to check again for coolant leaks
from the radiator core or hoses
The fan operates when the air conditioning system is turned on immediately after a
cold start. Confirm that the fan is operat ing by checking the fan sound and air flow.
If it is difficult to check them, turn the air conditioning system ON and OFF repeat-
edly.
(The fan may not operate in freezing temperatures)
g If the fan is not operating:
Stop the engine immediately and contact your Toyota dealer
If the fan is operating:
Have the vehicle inspected at the nearest Toyota dealer
WARNING
⬛Before taking measures
Do not remove the radiator cap if the coolant is hot. The radiator cap is under
the pressure of the coolant. Therefore, steam or hot water may spurt out of it,
causing serious injury such as burns.
⬛To prevent an accident or injury when inspecting under the hood of your
vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in serious injury such as burns.
⚫If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until
the steam has subsided. The engine compartment may be very hot.
⚫Keep hands and clothing (especially a tie, a scarf or a muffler) away from the
fan and belts. Failure to do so may caus e the hands or clothing to be caught,
resulting in serious injury.
⚫Do not loosen the radiator cap an d the coolant reservoir cap while the
engine and radiator are hot. High te mperature steam or coolant could spray
out.
