If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel a
pulsing in the brake pedal. The pulsating brake
pedal can be an indication of hazardous road con-
ditions and can serve as a reminder to take extra
care while driving.
System limits = ABS is active from speeds of approx. 3 mph
(5 km/h).
= ABS may be impaired or may not function if a
malfunction has occurred and the yellow %
ABS warning lamp lights up continuously aser
the vehicle is started.
Functions of OM-road ABS
\bOM-road ABS is activated automatically when
you select the ) drive program.
OM-road ABS is specially adapted for driving oM-
road:
= The front wheels lock cyclically during braking.
= The braking distance is shortened due to the
digging-in eMect.
System limits
= OM-road ABS functions at speeds below
25 mph (40 km/h).
= If OM-road ABS intervenes, the ability to steer
may be restricted.
Function of BAS
&WARNING Risk of an accident caused by a
malfunction in BAS (Brake Assist System)
If BAS is malfunctioning, the braking distance
in an emergency braking situation is
increased.
Depress the brake pedal with full force in
emergency braking situations. ABS pre-
vents the wheels from locking.
The Brake Assist System (BAS) supports your emergency braking situation with additional brakeforce.
If you depress the brake pedal quickly, BAS is
activated:
= BAS automatically boosts the brake pressure.
=BAS can shorten the braking distance.
= ABS prevents the wheels from locking.
The brakes will function as usual once you release the brake pedal. BAS is deactivated.
Functions of ESP n

The Electronic Stability Program (ESPn
) can moni-
tor and improve driving stability and traction in
the following situations within physical limits:
= When pulling away on wet or slippery roads.
= When braking.
= In strong side winds when you are driving
faster than 50 mph (80 km/h).
If the vehicle deviates from the direction desired
by the driver, ESP n
can stabilize the vehicle by
intervening in the following ways:
= One or more wheels are braked.
= The engine output is adapted according to the
situation.

Crosswind Assist
ESP n
Crosswind Assist detects sudden gusts of
side wind and helps the driver to keep the vehicle
in the lane:
= ESP n
Crosswind Assist is active at vehicle
speeds between approx. 50 mph (80 km/h)
and 125 mph (200 km/h) when driving
straight ahead or cornering slightly.
= The vehicle is stabilized by means of individual
brake application on one side.

HOLD function

qHOLD function
The HOLD function holds the vehicle at a stand- still without requiring you to depress the brake pedal, e.g. while waiting in traPc.
The HOLD function is only an aid. The responsibil-
ity for the vehicle safely standing still remains with the driver.
System limits
The HOLD function is only intended to provide assistance when driving and is not a suPcient
means of safeguarding the vehicle against rolling
away when stationary.
= The incline must not be greater than 30%.

qActivating/deactivating the HOLD function&WARNING Risk of an accident due to the
HOLD function being active when you
leave the vehicle
If the vehicle is only braked with the HOLD
function it could, in the following situations,
roll away:
= If there is a malfunction in the system or in
the power supply.
= If the HOLD function is deactivated by
depressing the accelerator pedal or brake
pedal, e.g. by a vehicle occupant.
Always secure the vehicle against rolling away before you leave it.
Requirements
= The vehicle is stationary.
= The driver\bs door is closed or the seat belt on
the driver\bs side is fastened.
= The vehicle has been started or has been
automatically switched oM by the ECO start/
stop function.
= The electric parking brake is released.
= Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is deactiva-
ted.
= The transmission is in position [, ^ or \\.

Function of Hill Start Assist
Hill Start Assist holds the vehicle for a short time
when you pull away on a hill under the following
conditions:
= The transmission is in position [ or ^.
= The electric parking brake is released.
This gives you enough time to move your foot
from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal and
depress it before the vehicle begins to roll away.
&WARNING Risk of accident and injury due
to the vehicle rolling away
Aser a short time, Hill Start Assist no longer
holds the vehicle.
Swisly move your foot from the brake
pedal to the accelerator pedal. Do not
leave the vehicle when it is being held by
Hill Start Assist.
Start-oM assist

qFunction of the start-oM assist
The start-oM assist enables optimal vehicle accel-
eration from a standstill. For this, a suitably high-
grip road surface is required and the tires and
vehicle must also be in good condition.
Do not activate the start-oM assist on public
roads.
Be sure to observe the safety notes and informa-
tion on ESP n
( page 175).

qActivating the start-oM assist&WARNING Risk of skidding and having an
accident from wheels spinning
When you use start-oM assist, individual
wheels could spin and you could lose control
of the vehicle.
If ESP n
is deactivated, there is a risk of skid-
ding and accident!
Make sure that no persons or obstacles are in the close vicinity of your vehicle.Deactivating ESP n
( page 177).Move the steering wheel to the straight-ahead
position.Depress the brake pedal Nrmly with your les
foot and keep it depressed.Engage the [ drive position (  page 160).Select the sportiest available drive program

Take your foot oM the brake, but keep the
accelerator pedal depressed.
The vehicle pulls away at maximum accelera-
tion.Switch on ESP n
once the acceleration proce-
dure is complete. ESP n
will otherwise not be
able to stabilize the vehicle if the vehicle starts
to skid or a wheel starts to spin.
Canceling the start-oM assist
Remove your foot from the accelerator pedal.Reactivate the ESP n

ATTENTION ASSIST

q Function of ATTENTION ASSIST
ATTENTION ASSIST assists you on long, monoto-
nous journeys, e.g. on highways and trunk roads.
If ATTENTION ASSIST detects indicators of fatigue
or increasing lapses in concentration on the part
of the driver, it suggests taking a break.
ATTENTION ASSIST is only an aid. It cannot
always detect fatigue or lapses in concentration in
time. The system is not a substitute for a well-res-
ted and attentive driver. On long journeys, take
regular breaks in good time that allow for ade-
quate recuperation.
You can choose between two settings:
= Standard: normal system sensitivity.
= Sensitive: higher system sensitivity. The driver
is warned earlier and the attention level detec-
ted by ATTENTION ASSIST is adapted accord-
ingly.
If drowsiness or increasing lapses in concentra-
tion are detected, the ATTENTION ASSIST Take
a Break! warning appears in the Instrument Dis-
play. You can acknowledge the message and take
a break where necessary. If you do not take a
break and ATTENTION ASSIST continues to detect increasing lapses in concentration, you will bewarned again aser a minimum of 15 minutes.
You can have the following status information for
ATTENTION ASSIST displayed in the assistance
menu of the on-board computer:
= The length of the journey since the last break.
= The attention level determined by ATTENTION
ASSIST:
- the fuller the circle, the higher the atten-
tion level determined
- as your attention wanes, the circle in the
center of the display becomes smaller
If ATTENTION ASSIST is unable to calculate the attention level and cannot issue a warning, the
System Suspended message appears.

If a warning is given in the Instrument Display, themultimedia system oMers to search for a rest
area. You can select a rest area and start naviga-
tion to this rest area. This function can be activa-
ted and deactivated in the multimedia system.
If ATTENTION ASSIST is deactivated, the Û
symbol appears in the assistance graphic in the Instrument Display. Aser the vehicle is started,
ATTENTION ASSIST is automatically activated. The last selected sensitivity level remains stored.
System limits
ATTENTION ASSIST is active in the 37 mph
(60 km/h) to 124 mph (200 km/h) speed range.
Particularly in the following situations, ATTENTION ASSIST only functions in a restricted manner and
warnings may be delayed or not occur:
= If you have been driving for less than approx-
imately 30 minutes.
= If the road condition is poor (uneven road sur-
face or potholes).
= If there is a strong side wind.
= If you adopt a sporty driving style (high corner-
ing speeds or high rates of acceleration).= If Active Steering Assist is activated and active
(  page 191).
= If the time has been set incorrectly.
= If you change lanes and vary your speed fre-
quently in active driving situations.
The ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness or alertness assessment is reset and restarted when continu-ing the journey in the following situations:
= If you switch oM the vehicle.
= If you unfasten your seat belt and open the
driver\bs door (e.g. to change drivers or take abreak).

Select Suggest Rest Area .Activate or deactivate the function.
If ATTENTION ASSIST detects fatigue or an increasing lack of attention, it will suggest a
rest area in the vicinity.Select the suggested rest area. You will be guided to the selected rest area.
Speed control cruise control

q Function of cruise control
Cruise control regulates the speed to the value
selected by the driver.
If you accelerate to overtake, forexample, the
stored speed is not deleted. If you remove your foot from the accelerator pedal aser overtaking,
cruise control will resume speed regulation back to the stored speed.
You can store any speed above 15 mph
(20 km/h) up to the maximum design speed.
Observe the notes on driving systems and yourresponsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognizedangers (  page 172).
