Mach 1 History
The Ford Mustang has been celebratedover the past half-century with manyspecial performance versions, includingseveral unique models that have proudlycarried their own nomenclature. Therehave been HiPos, Shelbys and GTs, plusCalifornia Specials, Bosses, Cobras, SVOsand 5.0s, Cobra Jets and Bullitts – eachwith distinct design cues and equipmentenhancements targeted at specific buyers.Of them all, perhaps the best-known andmost accessible to the widest owner baseis the Mustang Mach 1, a sporty fastbackfirst introduced in 1969 that had the look,features and performance that helpeddefine the muscle car era.
In postwar America, the Jet Age influencewas all the rage -- especially in the autoindustry, where tail fins and air intakesinfluenced progressive car designs. It wasthen when the terms Mach 1 and SoundBarrier became part of public conversation,as jets and rockets were being employedin aeronautic experiments to helphumankind soar past the speed of sound.
Ford’s first use of the Mach 1 name cameon a concept vehicle – a wheel-lesssingle-seat pod tethered to an arm thatallowed it to glide on a cushion of airaround a circular track set up at the FordRotunda in the spring of 1959. Ford’sLevacar Mach 1 Concept was anair-propulsion flying car of sorts,suggesting that vehicles in the future coulduse ducted air to levitate and maneuver athigh speed while off the ground.
The Mach 1 name was resurrected in 1966for another Ford concept car that wasmeant to preview some aerodynamic andstyling advances for a futuristichigh-performance Mustang fastback. Thetwo-seat Mustang Mach 1 Concept thatwas shown at the 1967 Detroit Auto Showfeatured a slanted areo-grille, severelychopped roof, large air scoops and steeplyslanted rear glass as part of a fullhatchback -- a design feature thatwouldn’t appear in production until 1974.Ford updated the Mustang Mach 1 Conceptwith a new front-end treatment in time fortouring the auto show circuit in 1968 toherald the popular pony car’s third stylingrefresh due the following year.
By the time 1969 had rolled around, theagain restyled and upsized Ford Mustangwas facing a series of new challenges, bothin the muscle car wars taking place out inthe marketplace by an onslaught ofpowerful new competitors, and inside ofFord Motor Company, where a new, Steedfor Every Need marketing approachexpanded pony car offerings to five distinctmodels with at least 10 differentpowertrain combinations. Ford's Mustanghad galloped into its fifth model yearrefreshed with unmistakable good looks,thanks to its 2+2 fastback now called theSportsRoof, featuring upper rear-quarterscut with forward-facing scoops and adramatic tail that incorporated an upsweptrear edge.

Even though the GT equipment groupintroduced in 1965 was again available fora final year, it was overshadowed for 1969,as the hot ticket was an all-new Mach 1model – wearing the name borrowed fromthose radical recent Mustang show cars.The new Mustang Mach 1 came standardwith the 351, a desirable mix of appearanceenhancements, plus special reflectivebodyside stripes and an uplevel interior.Later, a flat-black rear decklid spoiler anda set of rear window louvers were addedas dress-up options. To many enthusiaststoday, a ’69 Mach 1 equipped with anoptional new-for-’69 428 Cobra Jet V-8 isthe first true Mustang muscle car and atop-shelf collectible.
Other than yet another front-endfreshening (including going back to justtwo headlamps and adding non-functionaloutboard air inlets) and the elimination ofthe side scoops, the biggest change to the1970 Mustang lineup was a move to theCleveland-design 351 V-8 over the Windsor351 version from the year before. The GTmodel was dropped in the face of theMach 1's popularity, but the 428CJ engineoption was again available across theboard. By 1971, Ford’s famedfirst-generation pony car had alreadyundergone its fourth major facelift, growingin every dimension to accommodate evenbigger engines. The ’71 Mustang featuredan extended nose with a body that waswider, close to a foot longer and around600 pounds heavier than the original. TheSportsRoof-only Mach 1 model was nowFord's bread-and-butter enthusiast model,especially with the optional new big-block429 Cobra Jet engine, good for 370horsepower.
There were only minor changes on tap forMustang in 1972 and ’73, most of themdealing with the options list and thecontinuing emasculation of engineofferings and horsepower in the face ofemissions and fuel economy regulations,
as well as the elimination of a convertible.The automotive performance world sooncame to a screeching halt in the wake ofan oil embargo and resulting gasshortages, forcing most Americans toabandon their muscle cars andV-8-powered rides in favor of smaller,more fuel-efficient vehicles. Ford saw themarket shift as the perfect time to returnits pony car to its roots – a compact,affordable, sporty car whose styling andimage captured the spirit and imaginationof the American public.
When the new-from-the-ground-up,second-generation Mustang II waslaunched for the 1974 model year, it wasthe first Mustang equipped with afour-cylinder engine. An all-new 2.3-literI-4 produced around 90 horses as thestandard powerplant for the downsizedMustang II - yet performance was roughlyequivalent to the previous Mustang’s biginline six. The Mustang II was available asa hardtop two-door notchback coupe or athree-door hatchback-style fastback.Buyers had a choice of either I-4 or V-6power, as well as a three-speed automaticor four-speed manual transmissions. Tokeep Mustang’s performance image goingeven in a world where consumers favoredfuel economy over horsepower, anenthusiast-focused Mustang II Mach 1model was offered as a three-doorhatchback-style fastback, replete withbucket seats.
There’s little question that the saving gracefor the Mustang II’s performancereputation came when Ford finally realizedit needed to put the 302 V-8 back onto theMustang option list for 1975-78. The V-8was available in any model, but first onlymated to a three-speed automatictransmission, as a four-speed manual wasdelayed a full year until a suitable clutchcould be tooled up. The two-barrel 302shoehorned into the Mustang II gotcatalytic converters to help meet 1976’s

The Safety Canopy deploys duringsignificant side crashes or when a certainlikelihood of a rollover event is detectedby the rollover sensor. The Safety Canopyis mounted to the roof side rail sheet metal,behind the headliner, above each row ofseats. In certain sideways crashes orrollover events, the Safety Canopy will beactivated, regardless of which seats areoccupied. The Safety Canopy is designedto inflate between the side window areaand occupants to further enhanceprotection provided in side impact crashesand rollover events.
The system consists of the following:
•Safety Canopy curtain airbags abovethe trim panels over the front and rearside windows identified by a label orwording on the headliner or roof-pillartrim.
•A flexible headliner which opens abovethe side doors to allow air curtaindeployment
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with a readinessindicator. See Crash Sensorsand Airbag Indicator (page 56).
Properly restrain children 12 years old andunder in the rear seats. The Safety Canopywill not interfere with children restrainedusing a properly installed child or boosterseat because it is designed to inflatedownward from the headliner above thedoors along the side window opening.
The design and development of the SafetyCanopy included recommended testingprocedures that were developed by agroup of automotive safety experts knownas the Side Airbag Technical WorkingGroup. These recommended testingprocedures help reduce the risk of injuriesrelated to the deployment of side airbags(including the Safety Canopy).

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNING: Vehicle modificationsinvolving braking system, aftermarketroof racks, suspension, steering system,tire construction and wheel and tire sizemay change the handling characteristicsof your vehicle and may adversely affectthe performance of the electronicstability control system. In addition,installing any stereo loudspeakers mayinterfere with and adversely affect theelectronic stability control system. Installany aftermarket stereo loudspeaker asfar as possible from the front centerconsole, the tunnel, and the front seatsin order to minimize the risk of interferingwith the electronic stability controlsensors. Reducing the effectiveness ofthe electronic stability control systemcould lead to an increased risk of loss ofvehicle control, vehicle rollover, personalinjury and death.
WARNING: Remember that evenadvanced technology cannot defy thelaws of physics. It’s always possible tolose control of a vehicle due toinappropriate driver input for theconditions. Aggressive driving on anyroad condition can cause you to losecontrol of your vehicle increasing the riskof personal injury or property damage.Activation of the electronic stabilitycontrol system is an indication that atleast some of the tires have exceededtheir ability to grip the road; this couldreduce the operator’s ability to controlthe vehicle potentially resulting in a lossof vehicle control, vehicle rollover,personal injury and death. If yourelectronic stability control systemactivates, SLOW DOWN.
The system automatically turns on eachtime you switch the ignition on.
If a fault occurs in either the stabilitycontrol or the traction control system, youmay experience the following conditions:
•The stability and traction control lightilluminates steadily.
•The stability control and tractioncontrol systems do not enhance yourvehicle's ability to maintain traction ofthe wheels.
If a driving condition activates either thestability control or the traction controlsystem you may experience the followingconditions:
•The stability and traction control lightflashes.
•Your vehicle slows down.
•Reduced engine power.
•A vibration in the brake pedal.
•The brake pedal is stiffer than usual.
•If the driving condition is severe andyour foot is not on the brake, the brakepedal may move as the system applieshigher brake force.
The stability control system has severalfeatures built into it to help you maintaincontrol of your vehicle:
Electronic Stability Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto prevent skids or lateral slides byapplying brakes to one or more of thewheels individually and, if necessary,reducing engine power.
Traction Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto maintain traction of the wheels bydetecting and controlling wheel spin. SeeUsing Traction Control (page 174).

Suppose your vehicle has a1400-pound (635-kilogram) cargoand luggage capacity. You andone of your friends decide to pickup cement from the local homeimprovement store to finish thatpatio you have been planning forthe past two years. Measuring theinside of the vehicle with the rearseat folded down, you have roomfor twelve 100-pound(45-kilogram) bags of cement. Doyou have enough load capacity totransport the cement to yourhome? If you and your friend eachweigh 220 pounds (99 kilograms),the calculation would be: 1400 -(2 x 220) - (12 x 100) = 1400 - 440- 1200 = - 240 pounds. No, you donot have enough cargo capacityto carry that much weight. Inmetric units, the calculation wouldbe: 635 kilograms - (2 x 99kilograms) - (12 x 45 kilograms) =635 - 198 - 540 = -103 kilograms.You need to reduce the loadweight by at least 240 pounds(104 kilograms). If you removethree 100-pound (45-kilogram)cement bags, then the loadcalculation would be:1400 - (2 x220) - (9 x 100) = 1400 - 440 -900 = 60 pounds. Now you havethe load capacity to transport thecement and your friend home. Inmetric units, the calculation wouldbe: 635 kilograms - (2 x 99kilograms) - (9 x 45 kilograms) =635 - 198 - 405 = 32 kilograms.
The above calculations alsoassume that the loads arepositioned in your vehicle in amanner that does not overloadthe front or the rear gross axleweight rating specified for yourvehicle on the Safety ComplianceCertification label.
Special Loading Instructions -for all vehicles
WARNING: When loadingthe roof racks, we recommendyou evenly distribute the load,as well as maintain a low centerof gravity. Loaded vehicles, withhigher centers of gravity, mayhandle differently than unloadedvehicles. Take extra precautions,such as slower speeds andincreased stopping distance,when driving a heavily loadedvehicle.

•Follow the recommended maintenanceschedule and carry out therecommended checks.
•Plan your journey and check the trafficbefore you set off. It is more efficientto combine errands into a single tripwhenever possible.
•Avoid idling the engine in cold weatheror for extended periods. Start theengine only when you are ready to setoff.
•Do not carry unnecessary weight in yourvehicle as extra weight wastes fuel.
•Do not add unnecessary accessoriesto the exterior of your vehicle, forexample running boards. If you use aroof rack, remember to fold it down orremove it when not in use.
•Do not shift into neutral when you arebraking or when your vehicle is slowingdown.
•Shut all windows when driving at highspeeds.
•Switch off all electric systems whennot in use, for example air conditioning.Make sure that you unplug anyaccessories from the auxiliary powerpoints when not in use.
DRIVING THROUGH SHALLOW
WATER
WARNING: Do not attempt tocross a deep or flowing body of water.Failure to follow this instruction couldresult in the loss of control of yourvehicle, personal injury or death.
Note:Driving through standing water cancause vehicle damage.
Note:Engine damage can occur if waterenters the air filter.
Before driving through standing water,check the depth. Never drive through waterthat is higher than the bottom of the frontrocker area of your vehicle.
When driving through standing water, drivevery slowly and do not stop your vehicle.Your brake performance and traction couldbe limited. After driving through water andas soon as it is safe to do so:
•Lightly press the brake pedal to dry thebrakes and to check that they work.
•Turn the steering wheel to check thatthe steering power assist works.
Check the function of the following:
•Horn
•Exterior lights
FLOOR MATS

WAXING
Regular waxing is necessary to protect yourcar's paint from the elements. Werecommend that you wash and wax thepainted surface once or twice a year.
When washing and waxing, park yourvehicle in a shaded area out of directsunlight. Always wash your vehicle beforeapplying wax.
•Use a quality wax that does not containabrasives.
•Follow the manufacturer’s instructionsto apply and remove the wax.
•Apply a small amount of wax in aback-and-forth motion, not in circles.
•Do not allow wax to come in contactwith any non-body (low-gloss black)colored trim. The wax will discolor orstain the parts over time.
•Roof racks.
•Bumpers.
•Grained door handles.
•Side moldings.
•Mirror housings.
•Windshield cowl area.
•Do not apply wax to glass areas.
•After waxing, your car's paint shouldfeel smooth, and be free of streaks andsmudges.
CLEANING THE ENGINE -
MACH 1
Note:Do not allow water or cleaningsolutions to contact the exposed air filterelement. Cover the air filter assembly andavoid spraying water at it.
CLEANING THE ENGINE
Engines are more efficient when they areclean because grease and dirt buildup keepthe engine warmer than normal.
When washing:
•Take care when using a power washerto clean the engine. The high-pressurefluid could penetrate the sealed partsand cause damage.
•Do not spray a hot engine with coldwater to avoid cracking the engineblock or other engine components.
•Spray Motorcraft Engine Shampoo andDegreaser on all parts that requirecleaning and pressure rinse clean. InCanada, use Motorcraft EngineShampoo.
Note:If your vehicle has an engine coverremove the cover before application ofMotorcraft Engine Shampoo and Degreaser.Immediately rinse away any over spray.
•Never wash or rinse the engine while itis hot or running; water in the runningengine may cause internal damage.
•Never wash or rinse any ignition coil,spark plug wire or spark plug well, orthe area in and around these locations.
•Cover the battery, power distributionbox, and air filter assembly to preventwater damage when cleaning theengine.
Note:Do not allow water or cleaningsolutions to contact the exposed air filterelement. Cover the air filter assembly andavoid spraying water at it.
