tighter emissions standards, and saw anincrease to 139 horsepower – nearly equalto the ’73’s standard V-8 power level. TheMach 1’s optional Competition Suspensionpackage offered stiffer springs, adjustableshock absorbers and fatter front and rearstabilizer bars to improve handling, andkept it a popular enthusiast choice over allfive years of Mustang II's production. Bythe dawn of the third-generation Mustang, the Mach name would not return again tothe Mustang line until some 25 years later.
After the 1979-93 Fox Body Mustang yearshad come and gone with the reintroductionof a GT model, new sheet metal on arevamped SN-95 platform helped torekindle consumer interest in afourth-generation Ford Mustang.Enthusiasts lavished their attention uponthe 1993-1999 Mustang Cobraperformance model developed by the FordSpecial Vehicle Team skunkworks group, while Ford engineers looked to specialtymodels to fill the mid-market slot betweenthe standard Mustang GT and theupmarket Cobra.
After the success of the 2001 Bullitt, anew-for-2003 Mach 1 was launched tooffer fans some design cues from its '69namesake, including a blackout hood, black front air-dam extension and reardecklid spoiler – even bodyside scoops. Tomatch its aggressive look and hardwareupgrades, the '03 Mach 1 was powered bya 305-horsepower, 4.6L DOHC modularV-8. Unlike the SVT Cobra, the Mach 1offered an automatic transmission optionin lieu of the manual, and consequentlydrew a new group of enthusiast buyers intothe Ford fold. The strong customerresponse prompted another year of Mach1 production for 2004, the Mustang's finalyear on the fourth-gen platform.
Thanks to a popular mix of appearance, features and power, the 1969-73 Mach 1'sproved to be everyman's muscle car, andhave earned a respected place in Mustangperformance lore. Beyond those classicyears, the Mach 1 carried over for all fiveyears of the often overlooked 1974-78'sbefore a hiatus that ended with themodern and muscular 2003-04's. Mach1’s return to the Mustang lineup for 2021will add a new chapter on modern-daymuscle for this beloved model, and willcement its rightful place near the very topof Mustang performance history.

Event Data
This vehicle is equipped with an event datarecorder. The main purpose of an eventdata recorder is to record, in certain crashor near crash-like situations, such as anairbag deployment or hitting a roadobstacle; this data assist in understandinghow a vehicle’s systems performed. Theevent data recorder is designed to recorddata related to vehicle dynamics andsafety systems for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The event data recorder in this vehicle isdesigned to record such data as:
•How various systems in your vehiclewere operating.
•Whether or not the driver andpassenger seatbelts werebuckled/fastened.
•How far (if at all) the driver wasdepressing the accelerator and/or thebrake pedal.
•How fast the vehicle was traveling.
•Where the driver was positioning thesteering wheel.
This data can help provide a betterunderstanding of the circumstances inwhich crashes and injuries occur.
Note:Event data recorder data is recordedby your vehicle only if a non-trivial crashsituation occurs; no data is recorded by theevent data recorder under normal drivingconditions and no personal data orinformation (e.g., name, gender, age, andcrash location) is recorded. However, otherparties, such as law enforcement, couldcombine the event data recorder data withthe type of personally identifying dataroutinely acquired during a crashinvestigation.

The Personal Safety System provides animproved overall level of frontal crashprotection to front seat occupants and isdesigned to help further reduce the risk ofairbag-related injuries. The system is ableto analyze different occupant conditionsand crash severity before activating theappropriate safety devices to help betterprotect a range of occupants in a varietyof frontal crash situations.
The Vehicle Personal Safety Systemconsists of:
•Driver and passenger dual-stage airbagsupplemental restraints.
•Front seat outermost seatbelts withpretensioners, energy managementretractors and seatbelt usage sensors.
•Driver seat position sensor.
•Passenger seat position sensor.
•Front passenger sensing system.
•Passenger airbag off and on indicators.
•Front crash severity sensors.
•Restraints control module with impactand safing sensors.
•Restraint system warning lamp andtone.
•The electrical wiring for the airbags, crash sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, front seatbelt usage sensors, driverseat position sensor, front passengersensing system and indicators.
How Does the Personal SafetySystem Work?
The Personal Safety System can adapt thedeployment strategy of the safety devicesaccording to crash severity and occupantconditions. A collection of crash andoccupant sensors provides information tothe restraints control module. During acrash, the restraints control module maydeploy the seatbelt pretensioners, one orboth stages of the dual-stage airbagsbased on crash severity and occupantconditions.

After all occupants have adjusted theirseats and put on seatbelts, it is veryimportant that they continue to sitproperly. A properly seated occupant sitsupright, leaning against the seat backrest, and centered on the seat cushion, withtheir feet comfortably extended on thefloor. Sitting improperly can increase thechance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, liesdown, turns sideways, sits forward, leansforward or sideways, or puts one or bothfeet up, the chance of injury during a crashgreatly increases.
If you think that the status of the passengerairbag off indicator lamp is incorrect, checkfor the following:
•Objects lodged underneath the seat.
•Objects between the seat cushion andthe center console.
•Objects hanging off the seat backrest.
•Objects stowed in the seat backrestmap pocket.
•Objects placed on the occupant's lap.
•Cargo interference with the seat.
•Other passengers pushing or pulling onthe seat.
•Rear passenger feet and knees restingor pushing on the seat.
The conditions listed above may cause theweight of a properly seated occupant tobe incorrectly interpreted by the frontpassenger sensing system. The person inthe front passenger seat may appearheavier or lighter due to the conditionsdescribed in the list above.
Make sure the front passengersensing system is operatingproperly. See Crash Sensorsand Airbag Indicator (page 56).
If the airbag readiness light is lit, do thefollowing:
The driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for objects lodged underneath thefront passenger seat, or cargo interferingwith the seat.
If there are lodged objects, or cargo isinterfering with the seat, take the followingsteps to remove the obstruction:
•Pull the vehicle over.
•Switch the vehicle off.
•Driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for any objects lodgedunderneath the front passenger seator cargo interfering with the seat.
•Remove the obstruction(s) (if found).
•Restart the vehicle.

WARNING: To reduce risk of injury,do not obstruct or place objects in thedeployment path of the airbag.
WARNING: Close the glove boxdoor when your vehicle is moving. Failureto follow this instruction could reducethe effectiveness of the passenger kneeairbag and increase the risk of injury in acrash.
A driver knee airbag is located under orwithin the instrument panel. A passengerknee airbag is located within or under theglove box door. During a crash, therestraints control module may activate thedriver and passenger knee airbags basedon crash severity and occupant conditions.Under certain crash and occupantconditions, the driver and passenger kneeairbag may deploy but the driver frontairbag may not activate. As with front andside airbags, it is important to be properlyseated and restrained to reduce the risk ofdeath or serious injury.
Make sure the knee airbags areoperating properly. See CrashSensors and Airbag Indicator(page 56).
