The Personal Safety System provides animproved overall level of frontal crashprotection to front seat occupants and isdesigned to help further reduce the risk ofairbag-related injuries. The system is ableto analyze different occupant conditionsand crash severity before activating theappropriate safety devices to help betterprotect a range of occupants in a varietyof frontal crash situations.
The Vehicle Personal Safety Systemconsists of:
•Driver and passenger dual-stage airbagsupplemental restraints.
•Front seat outermost seatbelts withpretensioners, energy managementretractors and seatbelt usage sensors.
•Driver seat position sensor.
•Passenger seat position sensor.
•Front passenger sensing system.
•Passenger airbag off and on indicators.
•Front crash severity sensors.
•Restraints control module with impactand safing sensors.
•Restraint system warning lamp andtone.
•The electrical wiring for the airbags, crash sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, front seatbelt usage sensors, driverseat position sensor, front passengersensing system and indicators.
How Does the Personal SafetySystem Work?
The Personal Safety System can adapt thedeployment strategy of the safety devicesaccording to crash severity and occupantconditions. A collection of crash andoccupant sensors provides information tothe restraints control module. During acrash, the restraints control module maydeploy the seatbelt pretensioners, one orboth stages of the dual-stage airbagsbased on crash severity and occupantconditions.

The front passenger sensing system usespassenger airbag status indicators thatilluminate indicating that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is either on or off.
Note:The indicators briefly illuminate whenyou first switch the ignition on to confirmthey are functional.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to disable the front passengerfrontal airbag under these conditions:
•The front passenger seat isunoccupied.
•The system determines an infant ispresent in a child restraint.
•A passenger takes their weight off ofthe seat for a period of time.
•If there is a problem with the airbagsystem or the passenger sensingsystem.
Even with this technology, parents arestrongly encouraged to always properlyrestrain children in the rear seat.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem disables the front passengerfrontal airbag, the passenger airbagstatus off indicator illuminates andstays lit to remind you that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is disabled.
•If you have installed the child restraintand the passenger airbag status onindicator illuminates, switch the vehicleoff, remove the child restraint from thevehicle and reinstall the restraintfollowing the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to enable the front passengerfrontal airbag anytime the system sensesthat a person of adult size is sittingproperly in the front passenger seat.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem enables the front passengerfrontal airbag, the passenger airbagstatus on indicator illuminates.
If a person of adult size is sitting in the frontpassenger seat, but the passenger airbagis disabled, it is possible that the person isnot sitting properly in the seat. If thishappens:
•Switch the vehicle off and ask theperson to place the seat backrest in anupright position.
•Have the person sit upright in the seat, centered on the seat cushion, with theperson's legs comfortably extended.
•Restart the vehicle and have the personremain in this position for about twominutes. This allows the system todetect that person and enables thepassenger frontal airbag.
•If the passenger airbag status offindicator remains illuminated evenafter this, advise the person to ride inthe rear seat.
