Driving
Turns EV drive mode on/off
When EV drive mode is turned on, the
EV drive mode indicator will come on.
Pressing the switch when in EV drive
mode will return the vehicle to normal
driving (using the gasoline engine and
electric motor [traction motor]).
■Situations in which EV drive mode cannot be turned on
It may not be possible to turn EV drive
mode on in the following situations. If it cannot be turned on, a buzzer will sound and a message will be shown on the
multi-information display.
NOTICE
■To prevent 12-volt battery dis- charge
Do not stop the hybrid system when the shift lever is in a position other than P. If the hybrid system is stopped
in another shift lever position, the power switch will not be turned off and remained to ON. If the vehicle is left in
ON, battery discharge may occur.
EV drive mode
In EV drive mode, electric
power is supplied by the
hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery), and only the electric
motor (traction motor) is used
to drive the vehicle.
This mode allows you to drive
in residential areas early in the
morning and late at night, or in
indoor parking lots, etc., with-
out concern for noises and gas
emissions.

4-2. Driving procedures
●The temperature of the hybrid system
is high. The vehicle has been left in the sun, driven on a hill, driven at high speeds,
etc.
●The temperature of the hybrid system
is low. The vehicle has been left in tempera-tures lower than about 0°C (32°F) for
a long period of time, etc.
●The gasoline engine is warming up.
●The hybrid battery (traction battery) is low.
The remaining battery level indicated in the energy monitor display is low. ( P.120)
●Vehicle speed is high.
●The accelerator pedal is depressed firmly or the vehicle is on a hill, etc.
●The windshield defogger is in use.
■Switching to EV drive mode when the gasoline engine is cold
If the hybrid system is started while the
gasoline engine is cold, the gasoline engine will start automatically after a short period of time in order to warm up.
In this case, you will become unable to switch to EV drive mode.
After the hybrid system has started and
the “READY” indicator has illuminated, press the EV drive mode switch before the gasoline engine starts to switch to
EV drive mode.
■Automatic cancelation of EV drive mode
When driving in EV drive mode, the gas-
oline engine may start automatically and the vehicle may be driven by the gaso-line engine and electric motor (traction
motor) in the following situations. When EV drive mode is canceled, a buzzer will sound, the EV drive mode indicator will
flash, and a message will be displayed on the multi-information display.
●The hybrid battery (traction battery) becomes low.The remaining battery level indicated
in the energy monitor display is low.
( P.120)
●Vehicle speed is high.
●The accelerator pedal is depressed firmly or the vehicle is on a hill, etc.
■Possible driving distance when driving in EV drive mode
EV drive mode’s possible driving dis- tance ranges from a few hundred meters to approximately 1 km (0.6 mile).
However, depending on vehicle condi- tions, there are situations when EV drive mode cannot be used.
(The distance that is possible depends on the hybrid battery [traction battery] level and driving conditions.)
■Fuel economy
The hybrid system is designed to achieve the best possible fuel economy during normal driving (using the gaso-
line engine and electric motor [traction motor]). Driving in EV drive mode more than necessary may lower fuel econ-
omy.
■If “EV Mode Unavailable” is shown on the multi-information display
The EV drive mode is not available. The
reason the EV drive mode is not avail- able (the vehicle is idling, battery charge is low, vehicle speed is higher than the
EV drive mode operating speed range or accelerator pedal is depressed too much) may be displayed. Use the EV
drive mode when it becomes available.
■If “EV Mode Deactivated” is shown on the multi-information display
The EV drive mode has been automati-
cally canceled. The reason the EV drive mode is not available (the battery charge is low, vehicle speed is higher
than the EV drive mode operating speed range or accelerator pedal is depressed too much) may be displayed. Drive the
vehicle for a while before attempting to turn on the EV drive mode again.

ON and the brake pedal
depressed*, shift the shift lever
while pushing the shift release but-
ton on the shift knob.
: Shift the shift lever while push-
ing the shift release button on the
shift knob.
: Shift the shift lever normally.
When shifting the shift lever between P
and D, make sure that the vehicle is
completely stopped.
*: For the vehicle be able to be shifted
from P, the brake pedal must be
depressed before the shift release
button is pushed. If the shift release
button is pushed first, the shift lock
will not be released.
■Shift lock system
The shift lock system is a system to pre- vent accidental operation of the shift lever in starting.
The shift lever can be shifted from P only when the power switch is in ON and the brake pedal is being depressed.
■If the shift lever cannot be shifted
from P
First, check whether the brake pedal is being depressed.
If the shift lever cannot be shifted with your foot on the brake pedal, there may be a problem with the shift lock system.
Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately. The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to ensure that the
shift lever can be shifted. Releasing the shift lock:
1 Set the parking brake.
2 Turn the power switch off.
WARNING
■When driving on slippery road surfaces
Do not accelerate or shift gears sud- denly. Sudden changes in engine braking
may cause the vehicle to spin or skid, resulting in an accident.
NOTICE
■Hybrid battery (traction battery) charge
If the shift lever is in N, the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery) will not be charged even when the engine is run-ning. Therefore, if the vehicle is left
with the shift lever in N for a long period of time, the hybrid battery (traction battery) will discharge, and
this may result in the vehicle not being able to start.

the headlight switch in the or
position. (LED type headlights only: Illu-
minate brighter than the front position
lights.) Daytime running lights are not
designed for use at night.
■Headlight control sensor
The sensor may not function properly if an object is placed on the sensor, or
anything that blocks the sensor is affixed to the windshield.Doing so interferes with the sensor
detecting the level of ambient light and may cause the automatic headlight sys-tem to malfunction.
■Automatic light off system
●When the light switch is in or
: The headlights and front fog
lights (if equipped) turn off automati-
cally if the power switch is turned to
ACC or OFF.
●When the light switch is in : The

matically if the power switch is turned
to ACC or OFF.
To turn the lights on again, turn the
power switch to ON, or turn the light
switch or once and then back
to or .
■Light reminder buzzer
A buzzer sounds when the power switch
is turned to OFF or ACC and the driver’s door is opened while the lights are
turned on.
■When unlock the doors (welcome
lamp) (vehicles with LED type headlights)
When the doors are unlocked using the
entry function or wireless remote con- trol, the front position lights turn on auto-matically.
When the light switch is in the AUTO position and the surrounding area is dark, this function will operate.
■12-volt battery-saving function
In order to prevent the 12-volt battery of
the vehicle from discharging, if the light
switch is in the or position
when the power switch is turned off the
12-volt battery saving function will oper-
ate and automatically turn off all the
lights after approximately 20 minutes.
When the power switch is turned to ON,
the 12-volt battery-saving function will
be disabled.
When any of the following are per-
formed, the 12-volt battery-saving func-
tion is canceled once and then
reactivated. All the lights will turn off
automatically 20 minutes after the 12-
volt battery-saving function has been
reactivated:
●When the headlight switch is operated
●When a door is opened or closed

enable the system again ( P.266), or turn the power switch off and then back to ON. Additionally, if the object
becomes no longer in the traveling direction of the vehicle or if the traveling direction of the vehicle changes (such
as changing from moving forward to backing up, or from backing up to mov-ing forward), the system will be re-
enabled automatically.
■If “PKSB Unavailable” is displayed on the multi-information display and the PKSB OFF indicator is on
If the vehicle is stopped due to operation of the Parking Support Brake, the Park-ing Support Brake will be disabled and
the PKSB OFF indicator will illuminate.
●A sensor may be covered with water
drops, ice, snow, dirt, etc. Remove the water drops, ice, snow, dirt, etc., from the sensor to return the system to nor-
mal. Also, due to ice forming on a sensor at low temperatures, a warning message
may be displayed or the sensor may not be able to detect an object. Once the ice melts, the system will return to
normal.
●If this message is displayed, a sensor
on the front or rear bumper may be dirty. Clean the sensors and their sur-rounding area on the bumpers.
●If this message continues to be dis-played even after cleaning the sensor,
or is displayed even though the sen- sor is clean, have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■If a 12-volt battery terminal has
been disconnected and recon- nected
The system needs to be initialized. To
initialize the system, drive the vehicle straight ahead for 5 seconds or more at a speed of approximately 35 km/h (22
mph) or more.

4-6. Driving tips
4-6.Driving tips
When using Eco drive mode, the
torque corresponding to the accel-
erator pedal depression amount
can be generated more smoothly
than it is in normal conditions. In
addition, the operation of the air
conditioning system (heating/cool-
ing) will be minimized, improving
the fuel economy. ( P. 2 7 5 )
The Eco-friendly driving is possible
by keeping the indicate of Hybrid
System Indicator within Eco area.
( P.95, 100)
Shift the shift lever to D when
stopped at a traffic light, or driving
in heavy traffic etc. Shift the shift
lever to P when parking. When
using the N, there is no positive
effect on fuel consumption. In the
N, the gasoline engine operates but
electricity cannot be generated.
Also, when using the air condition-
ing system, etc., the hybrid battery
(traction battery) power is con-
sumed.
Drive your vehicle smoothly.
Avoid abrupt acceleration and
deceleration. Gradual accelera-
tion and deceleration will make
more effective use of the electric
motor (traction motor) without
having to use gasoline engine
power.
Avoid repeated acceleration.
Repeated acceleration con-
sumes hybrid battery (traction
battery) power, resulting in poor
fuel consumption. Battery power
can be restored by driving with
the accelerator pedal slightly
released.
Make sure to operate the brakes
gently and in a timely manner. A
greater amount of electrical energy
can be regenerated when slowing
down.
Repeated acceleration and decel-
eration, as well as long waits at traf-
fic lights, will lead to bad fuel
economy. Check traffic reports
before leaving and avoid delays as
much as possible. When driving in

WARNING
■Driving with snow tires
Observe the following precautions to
reduce the risk of accidents. Failure to do so may result in a loss of vehicle control and cause death or
serious injury.
●Use tires of the size specified.
●Maintain the recommended level of air pressure.
●Do not drive at speeds in excess of the speed limit or the speed limit specified for the snow tires being
used.
●Use snow tires on all, not just some
wheels.
■Driving with tire chains
Observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of accidents.Failure to do so may result in the vehi-
cle being unable to be driven safely, and may cause death or serious injury.
●Do not drive in excess of the speed limit specified for the tire chains
being used, or 50 km/h (30 mph), whichever is lower.
●Avoid driving on bumpy road sur-faces or over potholes.
●Avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt steering, sudden braking and shift-ing operations that cause sudden
engine braking.
●Slow down sufficiently before enter-
ing a curve to ensure that vehicle control is maintained.
●Do not use LTA (Lane Tracing Assist) system. (if equipped)
NOTICE
■Repairing or replacing snow tires
Request repairs or replacement of snow tires from any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer,
or any reliable repairer or legitimate tire retailers. This is because the removal and
attachment of snow tires affects the operation of the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters.
