4-1. Before driving
Driving
WA R N I N G
●During normal driving, do not turn
off the engine. Turning the engine
off while driving will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but
the power assist to these systems
will be lost. This will make it more difficult to steer and brake, so you
should pull over and stop the vehi-
cle as soon as it is safe to do so.
However, in the event of an emer- gency, such as if it becomes impos-
sible to stop the vehicle in the
normal way: P. 3 2 6
●Use engine braking (downshift) to
maintain a safe speed when driving down a steep hill.
Using the brakes continuously may
cause the brakes to overheat and lose effectiveness. (P.143, 147)
●Do not adjust the positions of the steering wheel, the seat, or the
inside or outside rear view mirrors
while driving. Doing so may result in a loss of
vehicle control.
●Always check that all passengers’
arms, heads or other parts of their
body are not outside the vehicle.
■When driving on slippery road
surfaces
●Sudden braking, acceleration and
steering may cause tire slippage
and reduce your ability to control the vehicle.
●Sudden acceleration, engine brak-ing due to shifting, or changes in
engine speed could cause the vehi-
cle to skid.
●After driving through a puddle, lightly depress the brake pedal to
make sure that the brakes are func-
tioning properly. Wet brake pads may prevent the brakes from func-
tioning properly. If the brakes on
only one side are wet and not func- tioning properly, steering control
may be affected.
■When shifting the shift lever
●Vehicles with an automatic trans-
mission: Do not let the vehicle roll backward while the sh ift lever is in a
driving position, or roll forward while
the shift lever is in R. Doing so may cause the engine to
stall or lead to poor brake and
steering performance, resulting in an accident or damage to the vehi-
cle.
●Vehicles with an automatic trans-
mission: Do not shi ft the shift lever
to P while the vehicle is moving. Doing so can damage the transmis-
sion and may result in a loss of
vehicle control.
●Do not shift the shift lever to a driv-
ing position while the vehicle is moving backward.
Doing so can damage the transmis-
sion and may result in a loss of vehicle control.
●Do not shift the shift lever to R while the vehicle is moving forward.
Doing so can damage the transmis-
sion and may result in a loss of vehicle control.
●Moving the shift lever to N while the vehicle is moving will disengage the
engine from the transmission.
Engine braking is not available
when N is selected.

NOTICE
■If you get a flat tire while driving
A flat or damaged tire may cause the
following situations. Hold the steering wheel firmly and gradually depress
the brake pedal to slow down the
vehicle.
●It may be difficult to control your
vehicle.
●The vehicle will make abnormal
sounds or vibrations.
●The vehicle will lean abnormally.
Information on what to do in case of a flat tire (P.345)
■When encountering flooded roads
Do not drive on a road that has
flooded after heavy rain etc. Doing so may cause the following serious dam-
age to the vehicle:
●Engine stalling
●Short in electrical components
●Engine damage caused by water
immersion
In the event that you drive on a
flooded road and the vehicle is flooded, be sure to have any author-
ized Toyota retailer or Toyota author-
ized repairer, or any reliable repairer check the following:
●Brake function
●Changes in quantity and quality of
oil and fluid used for the engine, transmission, differential, etc.
●Lubricant condition for the propel-ler shaft, bearings and suspension
joints (where possible), and the
function of all joints, bearings, etc.
Cargo and luggage
Take notice of the following
information about storage pre-
cautions, cargo capacity and
load:

■Things that must not be carried
in the trunk
The following things may cause a fire if loaded in the trunk:
●Receptacles containing gasoline
●Aerosol cans
■Storage precautions
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
●Stow cargo and luggage in the trunk whenever possible.
●To prevent cargo and luggage from sliding forward during braking, do
not stack anything in the enlarged
trunk. Keep cargo and luggage low, as close to the floor as possible.
●When you fold down the rear seats, long items should not be placed
directly behind the front seats.
●Never allow anyone to ride in the
enlarged trunk. It is not designed for
passengers. They should ride in their seats with their seat belts
properly fastened. Otherwise, they
are much more likely to suffer death or serious bodily injury, in the event
of sudden braking, sudden swerv-
ing or an accident.

3 Firmly depress the brake pedal
(automatic transmission) or
clutch pedal (manual transmis-
sion).

If it is not displayed, the engine cannot
be started.
4 Press the engine switch shortly
and firmly.
When operating the engine switch, one
short, firm press is enough. It is not necessary to press and hold the switch.
The engine will crank until it starts or for
up to 10 seconds, whichever is less.
Continue depressing the brake pedal
(automatic transmission) or clutch
pedal (manual transmission) until the engine is completely started.
The engine can be started from any
engine switch mode.
■If the engine does not start
●The engine immobilizer system may
not have been deactivated. ( P. 7 9 )
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer.
●If a message related to start-up is
shown on the multi-information dis-
play, read the message and follow the instructions.
■If the battery is discharged
The engine cannot be started using the
smart entry & start system. Refer to P.359to restart the engine.

■Steering lock function
●After turning the engine switch off and opening and closing the doors, the
steering wheel will be locked due to
the steering lock function. Operating
the engine switch again automatically cancels the steering lock.
●When the steering lock cannot be released, “Locked. Push Ignition
Switch While Turning Steering Wheel”
will be displayed on the multi-informa- tion display.

●To prevent the steering lock motor from overheating, operation of the
motor may be suspended if the engine
is turned on and off repeatedly in a short period of time. In this case,
refrain from operating the engine
switch. After about 10 seconds, the steering lock motor will resume func-
tioning.
■When “Keyless Access System
Disabled Check Owner's Manual” is displayed on the multi-information
display
The system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer immediately.
■Electronic key battery

■Operation of the engine switch
●If the switch is not pressed shortly and
firmly, the engine switch mode may
not change or the engine may not start.
●If attempting to restart the engine immediately after turning the engine
switch off, the engine may not start in
some cases. After turning the engine switch off, please wait more than 10
seconds before restarting the engine.
■If the smart entry & start system
has been disabled
If the smart entry & start system has been disabled, refer to P.357.
■Immediately after reconnecting the
battery terminals due to replacing the battery and so forth
The engine may not start. If this occurs,
turn the engine switch to ON, and start the engine after waiting at least 10 sec-
onds. Idling may be unstable immedi-
ately after the engine starts, however, this is not a malfunction.
WA R N I N G
■When starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in
the driver’s seat. Do not depress the accelerator pedal while starting the
engine under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
■Caution while driving
If engine failure occurs while the vehi-
cle is moving, do not lock or open the
doors until the vehicle reaches a safe and complete stop. Activation of the
steering lock in this circumstance may
lead to an accident, resulting in death or serious injury.
NOTICE
■When starting the engine
●Do not race a cold engine.
●If the engine becomes difficult to
start or stalls frequently, have your vehicle checked by authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualifiedand equipped profes- sional immediately.
●Vehicles with an automatic trans-mission: Do not shi ft the shift lever
while the starter is operating.

■Conditions to turn the high beams on/off automatically
●When all of the following conditions are met, the high beams will be turned
on automatically (after approximately
1 second): • The vehicle speed is approximately 60
km/h (37 mph) or more.
• The area ahead of the vehicle is dark. • There are no vehicles ahead with
headlights or tail lights turned on.
• There are few streetlights on the road ahead.
●If any of the following conditions is met, the high beams will turn off auto-
matically:
• The vehicle speed is below approxi- mately 50 km/h (31 mph).
• The area ahead of the vehicle is not
dark. • Vehicles ahead have their headlights
or tail lights turned on.
• There are many streetlights on the road ahead.
■Stereo camera detection informa-
tion
●If EyeSight is malfunctioning or tem-
porarily disabled, the high beam assist
will not operate, and the low beam
headlights will turn on.
●The high beams may not be automati-
cally turned off in the following situa- tions:
• When a vehicle suddenly appears
from around a curve • When the vehicle is cut in front of by
another vehicle
• When vehicles ahead cannot be
detected due to repeated curves, road
dividers or roadside trees • When vehicles ahead appear in a far-
away lane on a wide road
• When the lights of vehicles ahead are not on
●The high beams may be turned off if a vehicle ahead that is using fog lights
without its headlights turned on is
detected.
●House lights, street lights, traffic sig-
nals, and illuminated billboards or signs and other reflective objects may
cause the high beams to change to
the low beams, or the low beams to remain on.
●The following factors may affect the amount of time taken for the high
beams to turn on or off:
• The brightness of the headlights, fog lights, and tail lights of vehicles ahead
• The movement and direction of vehi-
cles ahead • When a vehicle ahead only has oper-
ational lights on one side
• When a vehicle ahead is a two-wheeled vehicle
• The condition of the road (gradient,
curve, condition of the road surface, etc.)
• The number of passengers and
amount of luggage in the vehicle • When there is a lag in response due
to the limitations of the detection
range of the stereo camera
●The high beams may turn on or off
unexpectedly.
●Bicycles or similar vehicles may not
be detected.
●In the following si tuations the system
may not be able to correctly detect the
surrounding brightness level. This may cause the low beams to remain
on or the high beams to flash or daz-
zle pedestrians or vehicles ahead. In such a case, it is necessary to manu-
ally switch between the high and low
beams. • When driving in inclement weather
(heavy rain, snow, fog, sandstorms,

NOTICE
In the following situations, turn off
Pre-Collision Braking System. Other- wise Pre-Collision Braking System
may activate unexpectedly.
●The vehicle is being towed.
●The vehicle is being loaded onto a
carrier.
●A chassis dynamometer, free-roll-
ers or similar equipment is being used.
●A mechanic lifts up the vehicle, starts the engine and spins the
wheels freely.
●Passing hanging banners, flags or
branches
●Thick/tall vegetation is touching the
vehicle.
●Driving on a race track
●In a drive-through car wash
Pre-Collision Braking System may
activate in the following situations. Therefore concentrate on safe driv-
ing.
●Passing through an automatic gate
(opening and shutting)
●Driving close to the vehicle in front
●Driving in a location where the grade of the road changes rapidly
●Visibility is poor due to sand, smoke
or water vapor blowing in the wind,
or the front vision is obscured due to water splashes, snow, dirt or dust
stir up generated by the vehicle in
front or oncoming traffic.
●Passing through clouds of steam or
smoke, etc.
●In adverse weather, such as heavy
snow or snowstorms

■Automatic cancellation by the
system
When the Adaptive Cruise Control
system brings your vehicle to a
complete stop, 3 intermittent beeps,
1 short beep a nd 1 long beep will
sound, and the Adaptive Cruise
Control system will release control
of your vehicle.
In the following cases, a notification
will sound 1 short beep and 1 long
beep and Adaptive Cruise Control
is automatically canceled.

 The grade of the road is very
steep.
 TRC or VSC is activated.
 The vehicle speed has exceeded
approximately 200 km/h (125

 The shift lever is moved to a
position other than D or M.
• Adaptive Cruise Control can be
resumed after the shift lever is
returned to the D or M position.
 Either the driver's door or the
front passenger's door is
opened.
 The driver’s seatbelt is unfas-
tened.
 The EyeSight system has a mal-

 The EyeSight system has
stopped temporarily. ( :white)

NOTICE
When the vehicle has stopped, the
automatic braking function will be gradually released and the vehicle will
start creeping. Make sure to stop the
vehicle completely by depressing the brake pedal after the vehicle has
stopped.

 The driving wheels spin on a
slippery road.
 The GPF system warning light is
illuminated or flashing.
●If EyeSight is malfunctioning, (yel-
low) is displayed on the meter display,
and the Pre-Collision Braking System OFF indicator and Lane Departure
Warning OFF indicator illuminate. If
this occurs, stop the vehicle in a safe location and then turn off the engine
and restart it. If the indicators remain
illuminated after restarting the engine, Adaptive Cruise Control cannot be
used. This will not interfere with ordi-
nary driving. However, contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer and have the system inspected. ( P.222)
●If the EyeSight operation has tempo-
rarily stopped, the Pre-Collision Brak- ing System OFF indicator and Lane
Departure Warning OFF indicator illu-
minate, and (white) is displayed
on the meter display. ( P.223)
●When the operation of Adaptive
Cruise Control has been automatically canceled, perform the Adaptive
Cruise Control setting operation again
after the condition that caused the cancellation has been corrected. If the
Adaptive Cruise Control function can-
not be activated even after the condi- tion has been corrected, EyeSight
may be malfunctioning. This will not
interfere with ordinary driving. How-
ever, contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer,
or any reliable repairer and have the
system inspected.
●When the low fuel level warning light
is illuminated, Adaptive Cruse Control may not be used.
The previously set vehicle speed is
stored in memory. To restore that
vehicle speed, push the cruise con-
trol switch to the “+ RES” side.

position, Adaptive Cruise Control will be automatically canceled. Do not
