For safety and security
WA R N I N G
●Do not place any objects over or
near the SRS airbag cover or
between you and the SRS airbag. If the SRS airbag deploys, those
objects could interfere with its
proper operation and could be pro- pelled inside the vehicle and cause
injury.
■If the SRS airbag deploys
●When the SRS airbag deploys,
some smoke will be released. This
smoke could cause breathing prob- lems for people with a history of
asthma or other breathing trouble. If
you or your passengers have breathing problems after SRS
airbag deploys, get fresh air
promptly.
●A deploying SRS airbag releases
hot gas. Occupants could get burned if they come into direct con-
tact with the hot gas.
■General Precautions regarding
SRS Airbag System for Accesso-
ries and Any Objects
●Do not put any objects (including
straps or cords) over the steering
wheel pad, column cover, or dash- board.
• These objects could be entangled
with the steering wheel, preventing the SRS frontal airbag, etc. from
operating properly.
• If the SRS frontal airbag deploys, these objects could be propelled
inside the vehicle, causing injury.
●Do not put any objects under the driver’s side of the instrument
panel. If the SRS knee airbag
deploys, those objects could inter- fere with its proper operation and
could be propelled inside the vehi-
cle and cause injury.
●Do not attach accessories to the
windshield, or fit an extra-wide mir- ror over the inside rear view mirror.
If the SRS airbag deploys, those
objects could become projectiles that could seriously injure vehicle
occupants.

Do not adjust the steering wheel while driving.
Doing so may cause the driver to mis-
handle the vehicle and cause an acci- dent, resulting in death or serious
injury.
■After adjusting the steering wheel
Make sure that the steering wheel is
securely locked.
Otherwise, the steering wheel may
move suddenly, possibly causing an
accident, and resulting in death or serious injury. Also, the horn may not
sound if the steering wheel is not
securely locked.

on the rear window defogger to turn on
the outside rear view mirror defoggers. ( P.266)

●During normal driving, do not turn
off the engine. Turning the engine
off while driving will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but
the power assist to these systems
will be lost. This will make it more difficult to steer and brake, so you
should pull over and stop the vehi-
cle as soon as it is safe to do so.
However, in the event of an emer- gency, such as if it becomes impos-
sible to stop the vehicle in the
normal way: P. 3 2 6
●Use engine braking (downshift) to
maintain a safe speed when driving down a steep hill.
Using the brakes continuously may
cause the brakes to overheat and lose effectiveness. (P.143, 147)
●Do not adjust the positions of the steering wheel, the seat, or the
inside or outside rear view mirrors
while driving. Doing so may result in a loss of
vehicle control.
●Always check that all passengers’
arms, heads or other parts of their
body are not outside the vehicle.
■When driving on slippery road
surfaces
●Sudden braking, acceleration and
steering may cause tire slippage
and reduce your ability to control the vehicle.
●Sudden acceleration, engine brak-ing due to shifting, or changes in
engine speed could cause the vehi-
cle to skid.
●After driving through a puddle, lightly depress the brake pedal to
make sure that the brakes are func-
tioning properly. Wet brake pads may prevent the brakes from func-
tioning properly. If the brakes on
only one side are wet and not func- tioning properly, steering control
may be affected.
■When shifting the shift lever
●Vehicles with an automatic trans-
mission: Do not let the vehicle roll backward while the sh ift lever is in a
driving position, or roll forward while
the shift lever is in R. Doing so may cause the engine to
stall or lead to poor brake and
steering performance, resulting in an accident or damage to the vehi-
cle.
●Vehicles with an automatic trans-
mission: Do not shi ft the shift lever
to P while the vehicle is moving. Doing so can damage the transmis-
sion and may result in a loss of
vehicle control.
●Do not shift the shift lever to a driv-
ing position while the vehicle is moving backward.
Doing so can damage the transmis-
sion and may result in a loss of vehicle control.
●Do not shift the shift lever to R while the vehicle is moving forward.
Doing so can damage the transmis-
sion and may result in a loss of vehicle control.
●Moving the shift lever to N while the vehicle is moving will disengage the
engine from the transmission.
Engine braking is not available
when N is selected.

damaged or dirty, or are not aimed
properly • When the vehicle is listing or titling
due to a flat tire, a trailer being towed,
etc. • Immediately after the engine is started
• When the headlights are changed
between the high beams and low
beams repeatedly in an abnormal manner
• When the driver believes that the high
beams may be flashing or dazzling pedestrians or other drivers
• When the vehicle is used in an area in
which vehicles travel on the opposite side of the road of the country for
which the vehicle was designed, for
example using a vehicle designed for
right-hand traffic in a left-hand traffic area, or vice versa
■Switching to the low beams
Turn the headlight switch to
position.
The high beam assist indicator will turn
off.
To turn the high beam assist on again,
turn the headlight switch to posi-
tion.
■Switching to the high beams
Push the lever forward.
The high beam assist indicator will turn
off and the high beam indicator will illu-
minate.
To turn the high beam assist on again,
push the lever forward again.
