During starting assistance: s tart the engine of
the donor vehicle and run at idle speed. 
Connect the negative pole of the donor bat-
t
ery and earth point 3 of your own vehicle by
using the jump lead/charging cable. Begin
with the donor battery Nrst.
During starting assistance: s
tart the engine of
your own vehicle. 
During the charging process: s
tart the charg-
ing process. 
During starting assistance: le
t the engines run
for several minutes. 
During starting assistance: bef
ore disconnect-
ing the jump lead, switch on an electrical con-
sumer on your own vehicle, e.g. the rear win-
dow heater or lighting.
When the starting assistance/charging process is
com
plete: 
First, remove the jump lead/charging cable
fr
om earth point 3 and the negative pole of
the donor battery, then from positive clamp
2 and the positive pole of the donor battery. Begin each time with the contacts on your
o
wn vehicle Nrst. 
Aser r
emoving the jump lead/charging cable,
close cover 1 of positive clamp 2.
Plug-in hybrid: if y
our vehicle has been started
with starting assistance, it may not be possible to
use the electric drive for approximately 30
minutes.
Further information can be obtained at a qualiNed
specialist workshop. Replacing the 12 V battery

Observe the notes on the 12 V battery
( pag
e 354).
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the
12 V batt
ery replaced at a qualiNed specialist
workshop, e.g. at a Mercedes-Benz Service
Centre. Observe the following notes if you want to replace
t

he battery yourself:
= Always replace a faulty battery with a battery
which meets the speciNc vehicle require-
ments.
The vehicle is equipped with a Oeece battery.
Full vehicle functionality is only guaranteed
with a Oeece battery. For safety reasons,
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only
use batteries which have been tested and
approved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz.
= Use detachable parts such as vent hoses,
elbow Nttings or terminal covers from the bat-
tery which is to be replaced.
= Make sure that the vent hose is always con-
nected to the original opening on the side of
the battery.
Fit any existing or supplied cell caps.
Otherwise, gases or battery acid could
escape.
= Make sure that detachable parts are recon-
nected in the same way. 358

Tow-starting or towing away
Overview of permissible towing methods (not
plug-in h

ehicle in the case of a breakdown, rather than
towing it away.
For towing, use a tow rope or tow bar with both
axles on the ground. Do not use tow bar systems. &

Safety-related functions are limited or no lon-

When your vehicle is towed away, signiNcantly
more eMort may be required to steer and
brake than is normally required.

Towing eye storage location
The towing hook is in the load compartment
under t
he load compartment Ooor.Fitting and removing the towing eye

Press the mark on cover 1 in
wards and
remove. 
Screw in the towing eye clockwise as far as it
will go and tight

Vehicles with a trailer hitch: v
ehicles with a trailer
hitch do not have a rear bracket for the towing
eye. Fasten the tow bar to the trailer hitch. 
Make sure that cover 1 eng

bumper when you remove the towing eye.

age, the electric line could be overloaded.

rating. Blown fuses must be replaced with fuses of the

ating, which you can recognise by the col-
our and the label. The fuse ratings and further
information to be observed can be found in the
fuse assignment diagram.

e or malfunctions caused by
moisture Moisture may cause damage to the electrical
sy
stem or cause it to malfunction. 
When the fuse box is open, make sure
t

hat no moisture can enter the fuse box. 
When closing the fuse box, make sure
t

hat the seal of the lid is positioned cor-
rectly on the fuse box. If the newly inserted fuse also blows, have the
cause tr
aced and rectiNed at a qualiNed specialist
workshop.
Ensure the following before replacing a fuse:
= The vehicle is secured against rolling away.
= All electrical consumers are switched oM.
= The vehicle is switched oM.
The electrical fuses are located in various fuse
boxes: = Fuse box in the engine compartment on the
les-hand side of the vehicle, when viewed in
