When driving with a loaded roof luggage rack or
trailer as well as with a fully laden or fully occu-
pied vehicle, the vehicle's driving and steering
characteristics change.
You should bear the following in mind:
= Do not exceed the permissible roof load and
towing capacity. Also observe the technical
data in the printed Owner's Manual.
= Evenly distribute the roof load, and place
heavy objects at the bottom. Also comply with
the notes on loading the vehicle
( page 119).
= Drive attentively, and avoid suddenly pulling
away, braking and steering as well as rapid
cornering.
Notes on driving on salt-treated roads
The braking eMect is limited on salt-treated roads. 166

Therefore, observe the following notes:
= due t
o salt build-up on the brake disks and
brakepads, the braking distance can increase
considerably or result in braking only on one
side
= maintain a much greater safe distance to the
vehicle in front
To remove salt build-up:
= brake occasionally while paying attention to
the traPc conditions
= carefully depress the brake pedal at the end of
the journey and when starting the next jour-
ney
Notes on aquaplaning
Aquaplaning can take place once a certain
amount of water has accumulated on the road
surface.
Observe the following notes during heavy precipi-
tation or in conditions in which aquaplaning may
occur:
= reduce speed
= avoid tyre ruts =
a void sudden steering movements
= brake carefully

Notes on driving through water on the road sur-
f
ace
Water which has entered into the vehicle can
damage the engine, electrics and transmission.
Water can also enter the air intake of the engine
and cause engine damage.
Observe the following if you must drive through
water:
= The water, when calm, may only reach the
lower edge of the vehicle body.
= Drive at a maximum speed of 10 km/h; water
can otherwise enter the vehicle interior or
engine compartment.
= Vehicles travelling in front, or oncoming vehi-
cles, can create waves which may exceed the
maximum permissible depth of the water.
The braking eMect of the brakes is reduced aser
fording. Brake carefully while paying attention to the
tr
aPc conditions until braking power has been
fully restored. ECO start/stop function
ECO start/stop function
% The ECO start/stop function is not available
in all dr

engine. Observe the status display on the
instrument display concerning this.
If all vehicle conditions for an automatic engine
s
top are met, the engine will be switched oM auto-
matically:
= Vehicles with manual transmission: you brake
the vehicle, shis into neutral i when travel-
ling at a low speed and then release the clutch
pedal.
= Vehicles with automatic transmission: you
brake the vehicle to a standstill in transmis-
sion position h or i.
= You activate the HOLD function or engage
transmission position j. Driving and parking

If the system detects an intelligent stop inhibi-

or, e.g. a stop sign, the engine will not stop.
If you activate the HOLD function or engage
the park position j, the engine can be
switched oM in spite of an intelligent stop
inhibitor.

the HOLD function is switched on.
The engine will restart automatically in the follow-
ing cases:
= V

ehicles with manual transmission: you
depress the clutch pedal.
= Vehicles with automatic transmission: you
engage transmission position h or k.
= You depress the accelerator pedal.
= The vehicle requires an automatic engine
start.
Status display on the instrument display: = The è symbol (green) appears when the
vehicle is at a standstill: the engine was
switched oM by the ECO start/stop function. =
The ç symbol (y

ellow) appears when the
vehicle is at a standstill: not all vehicle condi-
tions for an engine stop have been met.
= Neither the è symbol nor the ç symbol
appears when the vehicle is at a standstill: an
intelligent stop inhibitor, e.g. a stop sign, has
been detected
= The s symbol appears: the ECO start/stop
function is deactivated or there is a malfunc-
tion.
If the engine was switched oM by the ECO start/
stop function and you leave the vehicle, a warning
tone will sound and the engine will not be restar-
ted. In addition, a display message reading Vehi-
cle is operational Switch off ignition before exit-
ing will appear on the instrument display. If you do
not switch oM the vehicle, it will automatically be
switched oM aser three minutes. Switching the ECO start/stop function on/oM

ECO display function
The ECO display summarises your driving charac-
t
eristics from the start of the journey to its com-
pletion and assists you in achieving the most eco-
nomical driving style.
You can inOuence consumption by doing the fol-
lowing:
= driving with particular care.
= Vehicles with automatic transmission: driving
in drive program .
= Vehicles with manual transmission: driving in
drive program A.
= following the gearshis recommendations. The lettering in the segment will light up brightly,

he outer edge will light up and the segment will
Nll up when the following driving style is adopted:
= 1 Steady speed
= 2 Gentle deceleration and rolling
= 3 Moderate acceleration
The lettering in the segment will be grey, the outer
edge will be dark and the segment will empty
when the following driving style is adopted:
= 1 Fluctuations in speed
= 2 Heavy braking
= 3 Sporty acceleration
The ECO display will show you when you have
driven economically:
= The three segments will Nll up completely at
the same time
= The edges around all three segments will light
up
The additional range achieved as a result of your
driving style in comparison with a driver with a
very sporty driving style will be shown in the centre of display

not indicate a Nxed reduction in consumption. Regenerative brake system (plug-in hybrid)
Function of the regenerative brake system
Depending on t
he selected recuperation level, the
electric motor is operated as an alternator when
in overrun mode and during braking in order to
charge the high-voltage battery while driving. As
soon as you take your foot oM the accelerator
pedal when the vehicle is in motion and in trans-
mission position h, recuperation in overrun
mode is initiated.
The higher the recuperation, the more sharply the
vehicle is braked when coasting and the more
electrical energy is fed into the high-voltage bat-
tery.
The deceleration in overrun mode may not be suf-
ficient depending on the driving conditions.
Decelerating to a standstill is not possible. Also
brake with the service brake if necessary. Always
adapt your speed to the driving conditions and
keep a suPcient distance. Driving and parking

The recuperative brake system has the following
c
haracteristics:
= supports braking with electronically controlled
brake force boosting
= converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into
electric energy
% If you brake hard, the mechanical brake is
also used. This means t
hat the maximum
recuperative energy cannot be recovered. The
more you drive and brake in an anticipatory
manner, the more ePciently energy can be
recuperated.
System limits
The br
aking eMect of the electric motor during
recuperation in overrun mode may be reduced or
may not be available at all in the following situa-
tions:
= when the high-voltage battery charge level
increases
= if the high-voltage battery is not yet at a nor-
mal operating temperature In these cases, the desired deceleration is set by
t

he brake control system.
Manually setting recuperative deceleration

ECO Assist analyses data for the vehicle's expec-
ted route. This allows the system to optimally adjust the driving style for the route ahead, save
fuel and r

= Speed limit
= Downhill and uphill gradients

The segments of distance display 2 show the
distance to the event ahead as follows:
= A few segments light up: the event ahead is

Man y segments light up: the event ahead is
further away.
If ECO Assist is active, the "Foot oM the accelera-
tor" symbol 3 will appear on the instrument dis-
play and on the head-up display beside the trans-
mission position display.
When the vehicle nears an event, ECO Assist will
calculate the optimal speed for minimal energy
consumption based on the distance, speed and
gradient. The "Foot oM the accelerator" symbol 3
will appear on the instrument display.
If you take your foot oM the accelerator pedal in
good time, the remaining segments on the display
will successively turn green until the event shown
is reached. The drivetrain will be set for minimal
energy consumption. The vehicle will recuperate
autonomously and thus charge the battery.
% You can also manually increase or reduce the

ecuperation in drive program Î. However,
ECO Assist is available only in the hX
setting (  page 170).
If there is no response to the "Foot oM t
he accel-
erator" prompt 3, the segments will remain
white. The event will be shown for a short time
aser it
has been passed.
If t

he event involves a vehicle in front, the symbol
will be shown in green as soon as there is a
response to "Foot oM the accelerator" prompt 3.
If the system does not intervene during the event
ahead, nothing will be displayed. The system will
be passive.
System limits
ECO Assist can function even more precisely if
the route is adhered to when route guidance is
active. The basic function is also available without
active route guidance. Not all information and
traPc situations can be foreseen. The quality
depends on the map data.
ECO Assist is only an aid. The driver is responsible
for keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in
front, for vehicle speed and for braking in good
time. The driver must be ready to brake at all
times, irrespective of whether the system inter-
venes. The system may be impaired or may not function
in t he following situations:
= If visibility is poor, e.g. due to insuPcient illu-
mination of the road, highly variable shade
conditions, rain, snow, fog or heavy spray.
= If there is glare, e.g. from oncoming traPc,
direct sunlight or reOections.
= If there is dirt on the windscreen in the area of
the multifunction camera or the camera is
misted up, damaged or obscured.
= If road signs are hard to detect, e.g. due to
dirt, snow or insuPcient lighting, or because
they are obscured.
= If the information on the navigation system's
digital map is incorrect, insuPcient or out of
date.
= If signs are ambiguous, e.g. road signs in road-
works or in adjacent lanes. 172

The following function is country-dependent

vailable only in conjunction with an inte-
grated navigation system.
The route-based operating-mode strategy is active
onl
y in drive programs A and . When
route guidance is active, data on the planned
route is analysed. This function can be activated
and deactivated in the multimedia system
(  page 295).
If the function is active, data on the further course
of the route is evaluated. This includes e.g. road
type, speed limitations and altitude data.
The hybrid system then adapts the operating
strategy to the further course of the route:
= Use of electrical energy and the combustion
engine are adapted.
= State of charge of the high-voltage battery is
controlled accordingly.
= Electrical energy is reserved especially for
electric mode, e.g. urban route sections. =
The v
ehicle automatically selects the operat-
ing mode.
When the route-based operating-mode strategy is
activated, the energy Oow display shows the sta-
tus of the function as !
