Permitted towing methods

If the vehicle to be tow-started or towed away
is hea
vier than the permissible gross mass of
your vehicle, the following situations can
occur:
= the towing eye may become detached.
= the vehicle/trailer combination may
swerve or overturn. 
Before tow-starting or towing away,

heck if the vehicle to be tow-started or
towed away exceeds the permissible
gross mass. If a vehicle must be tow-started or towed away, its
per

missible gross mass must not exceed the per-
missible gross mass of the towing vehicle. 
Information on the permissible gross mass of

Safety-related functions are limited or no lon-

er available in the following situations:
= the vehicle is switched oM.
= the brake system or power steering system
is malfunctioning.
= the energy supply or the on-board electri-
cal system is malfunctioning.
When your vehicle is towed away, signiNcantly
more eMort may be required to steer and
brake than is normally required. 
Use a tow bar.

Depending on the vehicle equipment, the towing
eye may be located at a diMerent position in the

Screw in the towing eye clockwise as far as it
will go and tight

Vehicles with a trailer hitch: v
ehicles with a trailer
hitch do not have a rear bracket for the towing
eye. Fasten the tow bar to the trailer hitch.

If necessary, allow the engine and exhaust

Switch on the ignition. 
Engage second gear. 
Release the electric parking brake. 
Tow-start the vehicle while the clutch pedal is
full
y depressed. 
Slowly release the clutch pedal.

o neutral if the engine
starts. 
Stop the vehicle in accordance with the tr

conditions. 
Remove the tow bar. 
Remove the towing eye. 
Have the vehicle checked at a q

If you manipulate or bridge a faulty fuse or if

ou replace it with a fuse with a higher amper-
age, the electric line could be overloaded.

rating. Blown fuses must be replaced with fuses of the

ating, which you can recognise by the col-
our and the label. The fuse ratings and further
information to be observed can be found in the
fuse assignment diagram.

e or malfunctions caused by
moisture Moisture may cause damage to the electrical
sy
stem or cause it to malfunction. 
When the fuse box is open, make sure
t

hat no moisture can enter the fuse box. 
When closing the fuse box, make sure
t

hat the seal of the lid is positioned cor-
rectly on the fuse box. If the newly inserted fuse also blows, have the
cause tr
aced and rectiNed at a qualiNed specialist
workshop.
Ensure the following before replacing a fuse:
= The vehicle is secured against rolling away.
= All electrical consumers are switched oM.
= The vehicle is switched oM.
The electrical fuses are located in various fuse
boxes: = Fuse box in the engine compartment on the
les-hand side of the vehicle, when viewed in
the direction of travel (  page 371) =

If the windscreen wipers start moving when

he bonnet is open, you could be trapped by
the wiper linkage.

and vehicle before opening the engine

Open the bonnet. 
Remove any existing moisture from the fuse
bo
x using a dry cloth. 
Loosen screws 1.
Press clamps 2 and lis t
he fuse box lid up
and out. The fuse assignment diagram is in a recess on the
side of t

he fuse box.
Closing 
Check whether the seal is positioned correctly
in t
he lid. 
Place the lid on the fuse box. 
Make sure that clamps 2 eng
age. 
Tighten screws 1. 
Close the bonnet. Opening and closing the fuse box in the front
