2-3. Door and Locks
2
Before Driving
Door Locks
When the ignition is switched to ACC or ON, the vehicle lock-out pre-
vention feature prevent s you from locking yourself out of the vehicle.
All doors and the liftgate will automatically unlock if they are locked
using the power door locks with any door or the liftgate open.
The vehicle lock-out prevention feature does not operate while the
ignition is switched off.
When all doors and the liftgate are locked using the power door lock
with any door or the liftgate/tr unk lid open, the closed doors and the
liftgate are locked. After that, when all doors and the liftgat e/trunk lid
are closed, all doors and the liftgate are locked. However, if the key is
inside the vehicle, all doors and the liftgate are automaticall y
unlocked.
With the advanced ke yless function:
The beep sound is heard for about 10 seconds to notify the driver that
the key has been le ft in the vehicle.
Without the advanced keyless function:
The horn sound is heard twice to notify the driver that the key has
been left in the vehicle.
■ Door unlock (control) system with collision detection
This system automatically unlocks the doors and the liftgate in the event the
vehicle is involved in an accident to allow passengers to get o ut of the vehicle
immediately and prevent being trapped inside. While the ignitio n is switched
ON and in the event the vehicle receives an impact strong enoug h to inflate
the air bags, all the doors and the liftgate are automatically unlocked after
about 6 seconds have elapsed from the time of the accident.
The doors and the liftgate may not unlock depending on how an i mpact is
applied, the force of the impact, and other conditions of the a ccident.
If door-related systems or the battery is malfunctioning, the doors and the lift-
gate will not unlock.

2-9. Driving Tips
Saving Fuel and Protection of the Environment
How you operate your Toyota determines how far it will travel o n a
tank of fuel. Use these suggesti ons to help save fuel and reduce CO2.
• Avoid long warm-ups. Once the engine runs smoothly, begin driv -
ing.
• Avoid fast starts.
• Drive at lower speeds.
• Anticipate when to apply the br akes (avoid sudden braking).
• Follow the maintenance schedule and have your Toyota dealer pe r-
form inspections and servicing.
• Use the air conditioner only when necessary.
• Slow down on rough roads.
• Keep the tires properly inflated.
• Do not carry unnecessary weight.
• Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal while driving.
• Keep the wheels in correct alignment.
• Keep windows clos ed at high speeds.
• Slow down when driving in crosswinds and headwinds.
WARNING
■ Never stop the engine when going down a hill
Stopping the engine when going down a hill is dangerous. This c auses the
loss of power steering and power brake control, and may cause d amage to
the drivetrain. Any loss of steering or braking control could c ause an acci-
dent.

3-12. Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Because this system detects slight changes in tire conditions, the timing
of the warning may be faster o r slower in the following cases:
●The size, manufacturer, or the type of tires is different from the specifica-
tion.
●The size, manufacturer, or the type of a tire is different from the others,
or the level of tire wear is excessively differe nt between them.
●A run-flat tire, studless tire, s now tire, or tire chains are used.
●An emergency tire is used (The t ire pressure monitoring system warning
light may flash and then continue illuminating).
●A tire is repaired using the e mergency flat tire repair kit.
●The tire pressure is excessively higher than the specified pres sure, or
the tire pressure is suddenly lowered for some reason such as a tire
burst during driving.
●The vehicle speed is lower than about 9.3 mph (15 km/h) (includ ing
when the vehicle is stopped), or the drive period is shorter than 5 min-
utes.
●The vehicle is driven on an extremely rough road or a slippery, icy road.
●Hard steering and rapid acceleration/deceleration are repeated such as
during aggressive driving on a winding road.
●Load on the vehicle is applied to a tire such as by loading hea vy luggage
to one side o f the vehicle.
●System initialization has not bee n implemented with the specified tire
pressure.
