2-3. Door and Locks
WARNING
■Always take all children and p ets with you or leave a responsib le per-
son with them
Leaving a child or a pet unattended in a parked vehicle is dang erous. In hot
weather, temperatures inside a vehicle can become high enough t o cause
brain damage or even death.
■ Do not leave the key in your vehi cle with children and keep them in a
place where your children will not find or play with them
Leaving children in a vehicle with the key is dangerous. This c ould result in
someone being badly injured or even killed.
■ Keep all doors locked when driving
Unlocked doors in a moving vehicle are dangerous. Passengers ca n fall out
if a door is accidentally opened and can more easily be thrown out in an
accident.
■ Always close all the windows, lo ck the doors and the liftgate and take
the key with you when leaving your vehicle unattended
Leaving your vehicle unlocked is dangerous as children could lock them-
selves in a hot vehicle, which could result in death. Also, a v ehicle left
unlocked becomes an easy target for thieves and intruders.
■ After closing the door s and the liftgate/trunk lid, always veri fy that they
are securely closed
Doors and the liftgate/trunk lid not securely closed are danger ous, if the
vehicle is driven with a door and the liftgate/trunk lid not se curely closed, the
door and the liftgate/trunk lid could open unexpectedly resulti ng in an acci-
dent.
■ Always confirm the safety around the vehicle before opening a d oor
and the liftgate/trunk lid
Suddenly opening a door and the liftgate/trunk lid is dangerous .
A passing vehicle or a pedestrian could be hit and cause an accident.
■ When opening or closing a door and the trunk lid
Always confirm the conditions around the vehicle before opening /closing
the doors and the liftgate/trunk lid and use caution during str ong winds or
when parked on an incline. Not being aware of the conditions around the
vehicle is dangerous because fingers could get caught in the do or and the
liftgate/trunk lid or a passing pedestrian could be hit, result ing in an unex-
pected accident or injury.

Walk-away auto lock function:
A beep sound is heard when all doors and the liftgate are close d while the
advanced key is being carried. All doors and the liftgate are l ocked auto-
matically after about three seconds when the advanced key is ou t of the
operational range. Also, the hazard warning lights flash once. (Even if the
driver is in the operational range, all doors and the liftgate are locked auto-
matically after about 30 seconds.) If you are out of the operat ional range
before the doors and the liftgate/trunk lid are completely clos ed or another
key is left in the vehicle, the function will not work. Always make sure that
all doors and the liftgate/trunk lid are closed and locked befo re leaving the
vehicle. The function does not close the power windows.
● Auto re-lock function:
After unlocking with the request switch, all doors and the liftgate will auto-
matically lock if any of the following operations are not performed within
about 60 seconds. If your vehicle has a theft deterrent system, the hazard
warning lights will flash for confirmation.
The time required for the doors to lock automatically can be ch anged. Refer
to Customizable Features on P. 555.

Engine Exhaust (Carbon monoxide)
WARNING
■Do not drive your vehicle if you smell exhaust gas inside the v ehicle
Engine exhaust gas is dangerous. This gas contains carbon monox ide
(CO), which is colorless, odorless, and poisonous. When inhaled , it can
cause loss of consciousness and death. If you smell exhaust gas inside the
vehicle, keep all windows fully open and contact your Toyota de aler immedi-
ately.
■ Do not run the engine when inside an enclosed area
Running the engine inside an enclosed area, such as a garage, i s danger-
ous. Exhaust gas, which contains poisonous carbon monoxide, cou ld easily
enter the cabin. Loss of consciousness or even death could occu r.
■ Open the windows or adjust the heating or cooling system to draw
fresh air when idling the engine:
Exhaust gas is dangerous. When the vehicle is stopped with the windows
closed and the engine running for a long time even in an open a rea,
exhaust gas, which contains poisonous carbon monoxide, could en ter the
cabin. Loss of consciousness or even death could occur.
■ Clear snow from underneath and around your vehicle, particularl y the
tail pipe, before starting the engine:
Running the engine when a vehicle is stopped in deep snow is da ngerous.
The exhaust pipe could be blocked by the snow, allowing exhaust gas to
enter the cabin. Because exhaust gas contains poisonous carbon monox-
ide, it could cause loss of consciousness or even death to occu pants in the
cabin.

■Folding mirror
Fold the outside mirror rear-
ward until it is flush with the
vehicle.
■Rearview mirror adjustment
Before driving, adjust the rear-
view mirror to center on the
scene through the rear window.
WARNING
■Be sure to look over your shoulder before changing lanes
Changing lanes without taking into account the actual distance of the vehi-
cle in the convex mirror is dangerous. You could have a serious accident.
What you see in the convex mirror is closer than it appears.
■ Always return the outside mirrors to the driving position before you
start driving
Driving with the outside mirrors folded in is dangerous. Your r ear view will
be restricted, and you could have an accident.

2-7. Windows
Power W indows
The windows can be opened/closed by operating the power window
switches.
When driving with only one of the rear windows open, your ears might experi-
ence a resonating sound. However, this does not indicate a prob lem. The
sound can be reduced by slightly opening a front window or by changing the
size of the rear window opening.
WARNING
■ Make sure the opening is clear before closing a window
Closing a power window is dangerous. A person’s hands, head, or even
neck could be caught by the window and result in serious injury or even
death. This warning applies especially to children.
■ Never allow children to play with power window switches
Power window switches that are not locked with the power window lock
switch would allow children to operate power windows unintentionally,
which could result in serious injury if a child’s hands, head o r neck becomes
caught by the window.
■ Make sure nothing blocks the window just before it reaches the fully
closed position or while holding up the power window switch
Blocking the power window just before it reaches the fully clos ed position or
while holding up the power window switch is dangerous.
In this case, the jam-safe function cannot prevent the window f rom closing
all the way. If fingers are caught, serious injuries could occu r.
