wheel drive may not give sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steep slopes. You should try to avoid driving onsteep slopes. Also, you must exercise caution when driving on sand and mud and when driving through water because sufficie
nt traction may not be
available in certain circumstances.Please avoid driving the vehicle through areas where the tires may get stuck in deep sand or mud.
When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” (Electronically controlled 4WD) or“GRAVEL” (S-AWC) position at low speed, a slight difference in
steering may be experi-
enced similar to feeling as if the brakes wereapplied. This is called tight corner braking and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe-nomenon is typical of 4-wheel drive vehicles. If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” (Electronically con-trolled 4WD) or “SNOW” (S-AWC) in accor- dance with the road conditions, and then gradually depress the ac
celerator pedal for a
smooth start.

If the brake auto hold switch is pressed while all of the following conditions are met, the system will change to the standby state and the indicator light (A) on the switch comeson.  The ignition switch or
the operation mode
in ON. The driver’s seat belt is fastened.  The driver’s door is closed.
When the vehicle is
stopped by depressing
the brake pedal with the selector lever in any position other than “P” (PARK) or “R”(REVERSE), the brake auto hold activates and the vehicle will be
held stationary.
The brake auto hold indicator light in theinstrument cluster will come on while the system activates.
How to use brake auto hold

NOTE
 When the brake auto hold system cannot be used, a buzzer will sound and the following warning will appear on the information screen in the multi information display.

 If keeping pressing the brake auto hold switch after setting

ON (Stand by) even if
the brake auto hold switch is pressed. To set the brake auto hold to
ON, restart the engine
and press the brake auto hold switch again.

Depress the acceleration
pedal with the selec-
tor lever in any position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). The brakes are released, and the brake autohold indicator light in
the instrument cluster
will go off.
CAUTION Release the brake pedal only after the brake auto hold indicator li
ght has illuminated.

In the following situations, the brake auto hold system may not
operate temporarily.

belt is unfastened.

loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is not designed to keep the vehicle stopped in
place on uphill slopes
for more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do not rely on using the hill start assist to
maintain a stopped position
as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal. Doing so could cause an accident. Do not turn the igniti
on switch to the “OFF”,
“LOCK” or “ACC” po
sition while the hill
start assist is operating. The hill start assist could stop operating,
which could result in
an accident.

The anti-lock braking
system helps prevent
the wheels from locking up when braking.This helps maintain vehicle drivability and steering wheel handling.  When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distance when: • Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces.
CAUTION If the warning is displayed, the hill start assist will not
operate. Start off carefully.
Park your vehicle in a
safe place and stop the
engine.Restart the engine and check whether the indicator/display goes out
, in which case the
hill start assist is again working normally. If they remain displayed or reappear fre- quently, it is not necessa
ry to stop the vehicle

Brake assist system

braking force greater
than its capacity. Make

 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely removeyour foot from the brake pedal.  The brake assist syst

operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal.  You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenl

 Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted situati
ons where brakes are
applied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadworkplates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface.  When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique
sound. It may also
feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, simply hold the brake pedal down firmly. Do not pump thebrake, which will result in reduced braking performance.

During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicl

vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This f
unction will make the
steering wheel gradually harder to turn. Inthis event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system has cooled down, the steering effort will returnto normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with
the headlights on, the
headlights may become
dim. This behavior
is not abnormal. The headlights will return to their original brightne

The ASC is automatically activated when theignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi-tion. You can deactivate
the system by press-
ing down the ASC OFF switch for 3 seconds or longer. When the ASC is deactivated, the indica- tor will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the ASC OFF switch; the indicator is turned off.
