Selecting ignition mode
The vehicle's ignition can be put in variousmodes (levels) to make different functions availa-ble.
Selecting an ignition mode
Start knob in the tunnel console.
Ignition mode 0 – Unlock the vehicle andkeep the remote key in the passenger com-partment.
NOTE
To set level I or II without engine start – donot depress the brake pedal (or clutch pedalfor vehicles with manual transmission) whenselecting this ignition mode.
Ignition mode I – Turn the start knob clock-wise and release it. The control will automati-cally return to the original position.
Ignition mode II – Turn the start knobclockwise and hold it there forapprox. 5 seconds. Release the knob, whichwill automatically return to its original posi-tion.
Back to ignition mode 0 – To return toignition mode 0 from modes I and II, turn thestart knob clockwise and release it. The con-trol will automatically return to the originalposition.

Brake functions
The vehicle's brakes are used to reduce speedor prevent the vehicle from rolling.
In addition to the wheel brakes and parkingbrakes, the vehicle is also equipped with a num-ber of automatic brake assist functions. Thesesystems help the driver by e.g. keeping the vehi-cle stationary when the brake pedal is notdepressed (e.g. at a traffic light or intersection) orwhen starting up a hill.
Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, thefollowing brake assist functions may be included:
Auto-hold brake function at a standstill (AutoHold)
Hill Start Assist (Hill Start Assist)
Braking assist after a collision

To avoid short circuits or other damage, the fol-lowing steps are recommended when jump star-ting the battery:
1.Put the ignition in mode 0.
2.Make sure the auxiliary battery (the batteryused to jump start the discharged battery)has a voltage of 12 volts.
3. If the auxiliary battery is in another vehicle,turn off that vehicle's engine and make surethat the vehicles are not touching each other.
4. Clamp the red jumper cable onto the auxiliarybattery's positive (+) terminal (1).
CAUTION
Connect the jump cable carefully to preventshort circuits with other components in theengine compartment.
5. Fold back the cover over your vehicle's posi-tive (+) jump start terminal (2).
6.Clamp the other end of the red jumper cableto your vehicle's positive (+) jump start termi-nal (2).
7. Clamp the black jumper cable onto the auxili-ary battery's negative (-) terminal (3).
8. Clamp the other end of the black jumpercable to your vehicle's negative (-) groundpoint (4).
9. Make sure the jumper cables are securelyattached to help prevent sparks while jumpstarting.
10. Start the engine of the assisting vehicle andlet it run for a few minutes at a higher idlingspeed than normal, about 1500 rpm.
11. Start your vehicle's engine. If the enginedoes not start, allow an additional 10minutes of charging time and then try to startthe engine again.
NOTE
When the engine is started under normalconditions, the vehicle's electrical drive motoris prioritized – the gasoline engine remainsoff. This means that after the start knob hasbeen turned clockwise, the electric motor has"started" and the vehicle is ready to be driven.Start of the electric motor is indicated by theindicator lights on the instrument panel goingout and its preselected theme illuminating.
CAUTION
Do not touch the connections between thecable and the vehicle during the start attempt.Risk of sparking.
12. Remove the jumper cables in the reverseorder ‒ first the black cables and then thered cables.
Make sure that none of the clamps of theblack jumper cables come into contact witheither vehicle's positive (+) jump start termi-nals or either of the red jumper cable's con-nected clamps.

WARNING
Batteries generate hydrogen gas, whichis flammable and explosive.
Do not connect the jumper cable to anypart of the fuel system or to any movingparts. Avoid touching hot manifolds.
Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do notallow battery fluid to contact eyes, skin,fabrics or painted surfaces.

1.Turn on the vehicle's hazard warning flashersif a wheel change must be performed in anarea with traffic.
2. Apply the parking brake and put the gearselector in P, or first gear if the vehicle has amanual transmission.
For vehicles with Leveling Control*: If thevehicle is equipped with pneumatic suspen-sion, this must be switched off before thevehicle is lifted with the jack*.
3.Take out the jack*, lug wrench* and tool forremoving the plastic covers, which arestowed in the foam block.
Tool for removing the plastic covers on the wheel bolts.
4. Place chocks in front of and behind thewheels that are still on the ground. For exam-ple, use heavy wooden blocks or largestones.
5.Using the lug wrench, screw the towing eyeinto place as far as possible according to theinstructions.
CAUTION
The towing eyelet must be screwed into thelug wrench* as far as possible.
6. Remove the plastic covers from the wheelbolts using the designated tool.
7.With the vehicle still on the ground, use thelug wrench/towing eye to loosen the wheelbolts ½-1 turn by pressing downward (coun-terclockwise).
8. When hoisting the vehicle, it is important thatthe jack or garage lift arms are positioned onthe designated points under the vehicle. Thetriangle markings on the plastic cover indi-cate where the jack attachment points/liftingpoints are located. There are two jack attach-ment points on each side of the vehicle.There is a groove for the jack at each attach-ment point.
9. Position the jack under the attachment pointbeing used, ensuring that the surface is firm,flat and not slippery.

To lock the glove compartment:
Insert the key into the lock on the glove com-partment.
Turn the key 90 degrees clockwise.
Remove the key from the lock.
–To unlock, perform the above steps inreverse.
Using the glove box as a cooled area *
The glove compartment can be used to cool e.g.drinks or food. Cooling is possible when the cli-mate system is active (i.e. when the ignition is inmode II or when the engine is running).

–Activate or deactivate cooling by moving thecontrol as far as possible toward the passen-ger compartment/glove compartment.

Sun visors
In the ceiling in front of the driver's and frontpassenger's seats, there are sun visors that canbe lowered and angled to the side as necessary.

Automatic car washes
The vehicle should be washed as soon as itbecomes dirty. This makes the vehicle easier toclean because dirt does not attach as strongly. Italso reduces the risk of scratches and keeps thevehicle looking new.
An automatic car wash is a fast and easy way tokeep your vehicle clean, but it does not reach allareas of the vehicle. For best results, Volvo rec-ommends hand washing your vehicle or supple-menting automatic car washes with a hand wash.
NOTE
Volvo recommends not washing the vehicle inan automatic car wash during the first fewmonths; the paintwork on new vehicles takessome time to fully harden.
CAUTION
Before driving the vehicle into a car wash,deactivate the Automatic Braking when Sta-tionary and Automatic Parking Brake Applica-tion functions. If the functions are not deacti-vated, the brake system will seize when thevehicle is stationary and the vehicle will not beable to roll.
CAUTION
For automatic car washes in which the vehicleis pulled forward on rolling wheels:
1.Before washing the vehicle, make surethat the automatic rain sensor is deacti-vated. If it is not deactivated and inadver-tently starts, the wiper arms could bedamaged.
2. To help prevent damage from the auto-matic car wash machinery, make surethat the door mirrors are folded in, anten-nas retracted or removed, and any auxili-ary lights secured.
3. Drive into the automatic car wash.
4. Turn off the "Automatic Braking when
Stationary" function using the buttonin the tunnel console.
5.Turn off the "Automatic Parking BrakeApplication" function in the center dis-play's Top view.
6. Turn off the engine by turning the startknob in the tunnel console clockwise.Hold the knob in position for at least2 seconds.
The vehicle is now ready for the automatic carwash.
CAUTION
The system will automatically change to Pmode if the above steps are not followed. In Pmode, the wheels are locked, which theyshould not be when the vehicle is beingwashed in a car wash.
