Take out the towing eyelet. (P. 479, 494)
Remove the eyelet cover using
a flathead screwdriver.
To prevent damage, cover the tip of
the screwdriver with a rag.
Insert the towing eyelet into the
hole and tighten partially by
hand.
Tighten down the towing eyelet
securely using a wheel nut
wrench or hard metal bar.
Securely attach cables or chains to the towing eyelet.
Take care not to damage the vehicle body.
Enter the vehicle being towed and start the hybrid system.
If the hybrid system does not start, turn the power switch to ON mode.
Shift the shift position to N and release the parking brake.

When trouble arises
■While towing
If the hybrid system is off, the power assist for the brakes and steering will not
function, making steering and braking more difficult.
■ Wheel nut wrench
Wheel nut wrench is installed in luggage compartment. ( P. 479, 494)
WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
■ When towing the vehicle
■ While towing
● When towing using cables or chains, avoid sudden starts, etc. which place
excessive stress on the towing eyelets, cables or chains. The towing eye-
lets, cables or chains may become damaged, broken debris may hit peo-
ple and cause serious damage.
● Do not turn the power switch off.
This may lead to an accident as the front wheels will be locked by the
parking lock.
■ Installing towing eyelets to the vehicle
● The towing eyelets are only for the vehicle equipped with them. Do not use
the towing eyelets for another vehicle, and do not use the towing eyelets
for this vehicle on another vehicle.
● Make sure that towing eyelets are installed securely.
If not securely installed, towing eyelets may come loose during towing.
Be sure to transport the vehicle with the
front wheels raised or with all four wheels
raised off the ground. If the vehicle is
towed with the front wheels contacting
the ground, the drivetrain and related
parts may be damaged or electricity gen-
erated by the operation of the motor may
cause a fire to occur depending on the
nature of the damage or malfunction.

If a warning light turns on or a warning
buzzer sounds
Calmly perform the following actions if any of the warning lights
comes on or flashes. If a light comes on or flashes, but then
goes off, this does not necessarily indicate a malfunction in the
system. However, if this continues to occur, have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.

Brake system warning light and warning buzzer (red

Indicates that:
• The brake fluid level is low; or
• The brake system is malfunctioning
 Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and con-
tact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer. Continuing to
drive the vehicle may be dangerous.
This light also comes on when the parking brake is not
released. If the light turns off after the parking brake is fully
released, the system is operating normally.
Brake system warning light (yellow indicator)
Indicates a malfunction in:
• The regenerative braking system; or
• The electronically controlled brake system
 Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately.
Charging system warning light
Indicates a malfunction in the vehicle’s charging system
 Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and con-
tact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

Brake Override System/Drive-Start Control
Brake Override System
When the warning light illuminates:
Indicates that the accelerator and brake pedals are being
depressed simultaneously, and the Brake Override Sys-
tem is operating
 Release the accelerator pedal and depress the brake
pedal.
When the warning light flashes:
Indicates a malfunction in the Brake Override System
 Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately.
Drive-Start Control
When the warning light illuminates:
Indicates that the shift position was changed and Drive-
Start Control was operated while depressing the accelera-
tor pedal
 Momentarily release the accelerator pedal.
When the warning light flashes:
Indicates a malfunction in the Drive-Start Control system
 Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately.

Parking lock system warning light (warning buzzer)
Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system
• In this situation, there is a possibility that the parking
lock mechanism will not work. When parking, park the
vehicle on a flat surface and apply the parking brake
securely.
• The power switch may not be turned off. If this happens,
applying the parking brake will enable the switch to be
turned off.
 Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately.

Parking lock system warning message (warning buzzer)
Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system when
the vehicle is stopped
• In this situation, there is a possibility that the parking
lock mechanism will not work. When parking, park the
vehicle on a flat surface and apply the parking brake
securely.
• The power switch may not be turned off. If this happens,
applying the parking brake will enable the switch to be
turned off.
 Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately.

Hybrid battery indicator light
The hybrid battery (traction battery) will soon need to be
inspected or replaced
Have the hybrid battery (traction battery) inspected by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or
any reliable repairer immediately.*2
 Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately.

LED headlight warning light
Indicates a malfunction in the LED headlights
The LED headlights will not normally illuminate when
there is a malfunction, however they may be able to illu-
minate depending on the nature of the problem.
 Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately.

P position request indicator light (warning buzzer)
The amount of charge remaining in the hybrid battery
(traction battery) has fallen because the shift position has
been left in N for a long time
 Because recharging is not possible when the shift
position is in N, shift the shift position to P when
parking the vehicle for a long time.
• The driver’s door has been opened while the shift posi-
tion is in N, D or B
• An attempt has been made to start the hybrid system
while the shift position is in anything other than P
 Shift the shift position to P.

When trouble arises
*1: Brake system warning buzzer:
When there is a possible problem that could affect braking performance,
the warning light will come on and a warning buzzer will sound.
Parking brake engaged warning buzzer:
A buzzer will sound if the vehicle is driven at a speed of approximately
5 km/h (3 mph) or more.
*2: If you continue to use the vehicle in this state, the light starts blinking with
buzzer sounds, and you will soon become unable to start the hybrid sys-
tem.
*3: Open door warning buzzer:
The open door warning buzzer sounds to alert one or more of the doors is
not fully closed (with the vehicle having reached a speed of 5 km/h
[3 mph]).
*4: Seat belt buzzer:
The seat belt buzzer sounds to alert the driver, front passenger and rear
passengers that his or her seat belt is not fastened. The buzzer sounds for
30 seconds after the vehicle reaches a speed of 20 km/h (12 mph). Then, if
the seat belt is still unfastened, the buzzer will sound in a different tone for
90 more seconds.
Carrying out the corresponding action turns the warning light off.

The filter may be clogged, the air intake vent may be
blocked or there may be a gap in the duct.
 Have maintenance performed on the hybrid battery

rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or
any reliable repairer.

Indicates that the hybrid battery (traction battery)
power has dropped because a certain period of
time has elapsed after shifting the shift position to
N
A buzzer also sounds.
 Restart the hybrid system when starting
the vehicle.
Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system
In this situation, there is a possibility that the
parking lock mechanism will not work. When
parking, park the vehicle on a flat surface and
apply the parking brake securely. Also, it may
not be possible to turn the power switch off. If
this happens, applying the parking brake will
enable the switch to be turned off. A buzzer
also sounds.
 Have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Indicates a malfunction in the hybrid system
A buzzer also sounds.
 Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place
and contact any authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer.
Indicates that the hybrid battery (traction battery)
is low
A buzzer also sounds.
 When stopping the vehicle, shift the shift
position to P. The battery cannot be
charged with the shift position in N.
Indicates that the shift position was changed and
Drive-Start Control was operated while depress-
ing the accelerator pedal
A buzzer also sounds.
 Momentarily release the accelerator pedal.

Insufficient 12-volt battery charge
The parking lock mechanism may not function.
The hybrid system may not be able to start.
The power switch may not be able to be turned
off. In this case, the power switch may be
turned off by applying the parking brake.
After charging the 12-volt battery, the message
may continue to be displayed until the shift
position is changed from P.
A buzzer also sounds.
 When parking, choose a level location and
apply the parking brake securely.
 Maintain the hybrid system operation state
for approximately 15 minutes or more to
recharge the 12-volt battery.
 The hybrid system will not start: Start the
hybrid system by following the “If the
12-volt battery is discharged” procedure
( P. 513).
 If the message does not disappear: The
12-volt battery may be deteriorating.
The 12-volt battery may be discharged if
this continues. Have the 12-volt battery
inspected at any author ized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer.
Shift control system malfunction
A buzzer also sounds.
 Have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
• The hybrid system may not be able to start.
• The parking lock mechanism may not func-
tion. When parking, choose a level location
and apply the parking brake securely.
• The power switch may not be able to be
turned off. In this case, the power switch
may be turned off by applying the parking
brake.
