WARNING
■When adjusting the seat position
● Take care when adjusting the seat position to ensure that other passen-
gers are not injured by the moving seat.
● Do not put your hands under the seat or near the moving parts to avoid
injury.
Fingers or hands may become jammed in the seat mechanism.
■ Seat adjustment
● To reduce the risk of sliding under the lap belt during a collision, do not
recline the seat more than necessary.
If the seat is too reclined, the lap belt may slide past the hips and apply
restraint forces directly to the abdomen, or your neck may contact the
shoulder belt, increasing the risk of death or serious injury in the event of
an accident.
Adjustments should not be made while driving as the seat may unexpect-
edly move and cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
● Manual seats: After adjusting the seat, make sure that the seat is locked in
position.
● When returning the seats to their upright positions, be careful not to catch
the seat belts.
■ Flattening the seats
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
● Do not flatten the seats while driving.
● In a flat place, apply the parking brake firmly and shift the shift position to
P.
● Do not flatten the seats if they are occupied.
● Be careful not to get feet or hands caught in the moving parts or joints of
the seats while flattening.
● Do not allow children to flatten the seats.
● Do not drive with passengers sitting on the flattened seatback or in the lug-
gage compartment.
● Do not drive with luggage or passengers on the flattened seats.
● Do not allow children to enter the luggage compartment.
● After flattening, gently rock the seats to ensure they are firmly in place.
● Make sure that the seat belts are not caught in the gaps between the
seats.

Park the vehicle in a safe place.
Apply the parking brake firmly and shift the shift position to P. (P. 234)
Adjust the position of the front seat and the angle of the seatback.

Depending on the position of the front seat, if the seatback is folded back-
ward, it may interfere with the operation of the second seat.
Uncouple and stow the second center seat belt. (P. 4 0 )
Lower the head restraint of the second seat. (P. 199)
Pull the lever (either or )
and tilt the seatback forward.
Press the seat-folding button.
The seats will be folded forward.

■When operating the seats
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
● Do not fold the seatbacks down while driving.
● Stop the vehicle on level ground, apply the parking brake firmly and shift
the shift position to P.
● Do not allow anyone to sit on a folded seatback.
● Do not operate the seat if it is occupied.
● Be careful not to get feet or hands caught in the moving parts or joints of
the seats during operation.
● Do not allow children to operate the seat.
● After operation, rock the seat gently to ensure that it is firmly in place.
■ Reclining adjustment
● To reduce the risk of sliding under the lap belt during a collision, do not
recline the seat more than necessary.
If the seat is too reclined, the lap belt may slide past the hips and apply
restraint forces directly to the abdomen, or your neck may contact the
shoulder belt, increasing the risk of death or serious injury in the event of
an accident.
Adjustments should not be made while driving as the seat may unexpect-
edly move and cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
● After adjusting the seat, make sure that the seat is locked in position.
■ After returning the seatback to the upright position
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
● Make sure that the seatback is securely locked in position by lightly push-
ing it back and forth.
● Check that the seat belts are not twisted or caught in the seatback.
● Re-couple the second center seat belt if it has been uncoupled. (P. 39)
● When using the seat belts, ensure that the seat belts are not in the seat
belt hangers. ( P. 193, 197)
■ After tilting the second seatback forward when getting in or out of the
vehicle etc.
Slide the seat backward and raise the seatback, and check that the seat is
securely locked.
If the seat is not locked, the seat may unexpectedly move and cause death
or serious injury.

Seatback angle adjustment lever
Park the vehicle in a safe place.
Apply the parking brake firmly and shift the shift position to P. (P. 234)
Adjust the position of the second seats and the angle of the seat-

With the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift position to D.

Check that the shift position indicator shows D.
Release the parking brake. (P. 240)
Gradually release the brake pedal and gently depress the accelera-
tor pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
With the shift position in D, depress the brake pedal.
If necessary, set the parking brake.
If the vehicle is to be stopped for an extended period of time, shift the shift
position to P. (P. 234)
Stop the vehicle completely.

Check that the shift position indicator shows P.
Press the power switch to stop the hybrid system.
Slowly release the brake pedal.

Firmly set the parking brake with the brake pedal depressed, and
then shift the shift position to D.
Release the brake pedal and gently depress the accelerator pedal.
Release the parking brake.
■When starting off on a uphill
The hill-start assist control will activate. (P. 319)
■For fuel-efficient driving
Keep in mind that hybrid vehicles are similar to conventional vehicles, and it
is necessary to refrain from activities such as sudden acceleration. (P. 324)
■Driving in the rain
●Drive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the win-
dows may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
●Drive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be espe-
cially slippery.
●Refrain from high speeds when driving on an expressway in the rain,
because there may be a layer of water between the tires and the road sur-
face, preventing the steering and brakes from operating properly.
■Restraining the hybrid system output (Brake Override System)
●When the accelerator and brake pedals are depressed at the same time, the
hybrid system output may be restrained.
●Vehicles without multi-information display: A warning light comes on while
the system is operating. (P. 447)
●Vehicles with multi-information display: A warning message is displayed on
the multi-information display while the system is operating. (P. 464)
■Restraining sudden start (Drive-Start Control)
When the following unusual operation is performed, the hybrid system output
may be restrained.
●When the shift position is shifted from R to D/B, D/B to R, N to R, P to D/B, P
to R with the accelerator pedal depressed, a warning light comes on (vehi-
cles without multi-information display) or a warning message appears on the
multi-information display (vehicles with multi-information display).

●When the accelerator pedal is depressed too much while the vehicle is in
reverse.

To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recom-
mended:
●For the first 300 km (200 miles):
Avoid sudden stops.
●For the first 1600 km (1000 miles):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
■Drum-in-disc type parking brake system
Your vehicle has a drum-in-disc type parking brake system. This type of brake
system needs bedding-down of the brake shoes periodically or whenever the
parking brake shoes and/or drum are replaced. Have any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer perform the bed-
ding down operation.
■Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability
of the correct fuel. (P. 528)
