XReach into the gap, pull hood catch han-dleDup and lift hoodC.
If you lift the hood by approximately 15 in(40 cm), the hood is opened and held openautomatically by the gas-filled strut.
Closing the hood
XLower the hood and let it fall from a heightof approximately 8 in (20 cm).
XCheck that the hood has engaged properly.If the hood can be raised slightly, it is notproperly engaged. Open it again and close itwith a little more force.
Engine oil
Notes on the oil level
Depending on your driving style, the vehicleconsumes up to 0.9 US qt(0.8 liters) of oil per600 miles (1,000 km). The oil consumptionmay be higher than this when the vehicle isnew or if you frequently drive at high enginespeeds.
Depending on the engine, the oil dipstick maybe in a different location.
When checking the oil level:
Rpark the vehicle on a level surface
Rthe engine should be switched off forapproximately five minutes if the engine isat normal operating temperature
Rif the engine is not at normal operating tem-perature, e.g. if the engine was only startedbriefly, wait about 30 minutes before carry-ing out the measurement

hot. Working in the engine compartment

Only touch the following components descri-
bed.
If work is being carried out on public roads,pay attention to the road and traffic conditionsand secure the area as appropriate.

GWARNING
If engine oil comes into contact with hot
components in the engine compartment, it
may ignite. There is a risk of fire and injury.
Make sure that engine oil is not spilled next
to the filler neck. Let the engine cool down
and thoroughly clean the engine oil off the
components before starting the engine.
HEnvironmental note
When adding oil, take care not to spill any. If
oil enters the soil or waterways, it is harmful
to the environment.
!Use only engine oils and oil filters that areapproved for vehicles with a service system.A list of the engine oils and oil filters thathave been tested and approved in accord-ance with Mercedes-Benz Specifications forService Products is available at any author-ized Mercedes-Benz Center.
The following cause engine failure or dam-age to the exhaust system:
RUse of engine oils and oil filters that havenot been expressly approved for the ser-vice system
RReplacement of engine oil and oil filterafter the replacement interval specifiedby the service system has expired
RUse of engine oil additives
!Do not add too much oil. If the oil level isabove the "max" mark on the dipstick, toomuch oil has been added. This can lead todamage to the engine or the catalytic con-verter. Have excess oil siphoned off.
Example: engine oil cap
XTurn capCcounter-clockwise and removeit.
XAdd engine oil.If the oil level is at or below the MIN markon the oil dipstick, add 1.1 US qt (1.0 liter)of engine oil.
XReplace capCon the filler neck and turnclockwise.Ensure that the cap locks into placesecurely.
XCheck the oil level again with the oil dipstick(Ypage 266).

Where possible, let the engine cool down
and touch only the components described in
the following.
GWARNING
Opening the hood when the engine is over-
heated or when there is a fire in the engine
compartment could expose you to hot gases
or other service products. There is a risk of
injury.
Let an overheated engine cool down before
opening the hood. If there is a fire in the
engine compartment, keep the hood closed
and contact the fire department.
GWARNING
The engine compartment contains moving
components. Certain components, such as
the radiator fan, may continue to run or start
again suddenly when the ignition is off.
There is a risk of injury.

Make sure that windshield washer concen-
trate is not spilled in the vicinity of the filler
neck.

If the washer fluid level drops below the rec-ommended minimum fluid level of 1 US qt(1 liter), a message appears in the multifunc-tion display prompting you to add washer fluid(Ypage 231).

Maximum loaded vehicle weight
The maximum weight is the sum of:
Rthe curb weight of the vehicle
Rthe weight of the accessories
Rthe load limit
Rthe weight of the factory installed optionalequipment
Kilopascal (kPa)
Metric unit for tire pressure. 6.9 kPa corre-sponds to 1 psi. Another unit for tire pressureis bar. 100 kilopascals (kPa) are the equivalentof 1 bar.
Load index
In addition to the load-bearing index, the loadindex may also be imprinted on the sidewall ofthe tire. This specifies the load-bearing capa-city more precisely.
Curb weight
The weight of a vehicle with standard equip-ment including the maximum capacity of fuel,oil and coolant. It also includes the air-condi-tioning system and optional equipment if theseare installed in the vehicle, but does notinclude passengers or luggage.
Maximum load rating
The maximum load rating is the maximum per-missible weight in kilograms or lbs for which atire is approved.
Maximum permissible tire pressure
Maximum permissible tire pressure for onetire.
Maximum load on one tire
Maximum load on one tire. This is calculatedby dividing the maximum axle load of one axleby two.
PSI (pounds per square inch)
A standard unit of measure for tire pressure.
Aspect ratio
Relationship between tire height and tire widthin percent.
Tire pressure
This is pressure inside the tire applying an out-ward force to each square inch of the tire'ssurface. The tire pressure is specified in
pounds per square inch (psi), in kilopascal(kPa) or in bar. The tire pressure should onlybe corrected when the tires are cold.
Cold tire pressure
The tires are cold:
Rif the vehicle has been parked with the tiresout of direct sunlight for at least three hoursand
Rif the vehicle has not been driven furtherthan 1 mile (1.6 km)
Tread
The part of the tire that comes into contactwith the road.
Bead
The tire bead ensures that the tire sitssecurely on the wheel. There are several steelwires in the bead to prevent the tire from com-ing loose from the wheel rim.
Sidewall
The part of the tire between the tread and thebead.
Weight of optional extras
The combined weight of those optional extrasthat weigh more than the replaced standardparts and more than 2.3 kg (5 lbs). Theseoptional extras, such as high-performancebrakes, level control, a roof rack or a high-per-formance battery, are not included in the curbweight and the weight of the accessories.
TIN (Tire Identification Number)
This is a unique identifier which can be usedby a tire manufacturer to identify tires, forexample for a product recall, and thus identifythe purchasers. The TIN is made up of themanufacturer's identity code, tire size, tiretype code and the manufacturing date.
Load bearing index
The load bearing index (also load index) is acode that contains the maximum load bearingcapacity of a tire.
Traction
Traction is the result of friction between thetires and the road surface.

The coolant is a mixture of water and anti-freeze/corrosion inhibitor. It is responsible forthe following:
Ranti-corrosion protection
Rantifreeze protection
Rraising the boiling point
If the coolant has antifreeze protection downto -35 ‡ (-37 †), the boiling point of the cool-ant during operation is approximately 266 ‡(130 †).
The antifreeze/corrosion inhibitor concentra-tion in the engine cooling system should:
Rbe at least 50%. This will protect the enginecooling system against freezing down toapproximately -35 ‡ (-37 †).
Rnot exceed 55% (antifreeze protection downto -49 ‡ [-45 †]). Otherwise, heat will notbe dissipated as effectively.
If the vehicle has lost coolant, add equalamounts of water and antifreeze/corrosioninhibitor.
Mercedes-Benz recommends an antifreeze/corrosion inhibitor concentrate in accordancewith MB Specifications for Service Products310.1.
iWhen the vehicle is first delivered, it is fil-led with a coolant mixture that ensures ade-quate antifreeze and anti-corrosion protec-tion.
iThe coolant is checked with every mainte-nance interval at a qualified specialist work-shop.

Windshield washer system
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Windshield washer concentrate is highly
flammable. If windshield washer concentrate
gets onto hot components of the engine or
the exhaust system, it can ignite. There is a
risk of fire and injury.
Make sure that windshield washer concen-
trate is not spilled in the vicinity of the filler
neck.
!Only use washer fluid which is suitable forlamp lenses, e.g. MB SummerFit or MB Win-terFit. Unsuitable washer fluid may damagethe lamp lenses of the headlamps.
!Only MB SummerFit and MB WinterFitwasher fluid should be mixed together. Thespray nozzles may otherwise becomeblocked.
Do not use distilled or de-ionized water. Other-wise, the level sensor may give a false reading.
When handling washer fluid, observe theimportant safety notes on service products(Ypage 321).
At temperatures above freezing:
XFill the washer fluid reservoir with a mixtureof water and windshield washer fluid, e.g.MB SummerFit.
XAdd 1 part MB SummerFit to 100 partswater.
At temperatures below freezing:
XFill the washer fluid reservoir with a mixtureof water and washer fluid, e.g. MB WinterFit.
For the correct mixing ratio refer to theinformation on the antifreeze reservoir.
iAdd windshield washer fluid, e.g. MB Sum-merFit or MB WinterFit, to the washer fluidall year round.
