XTurn the mechanical key counter-clockwiseas far as it will go to positionG.The door is unlocked.

Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with theSmartKey or KEYLESS-GO, use the mechanicalkey.
XOpen the driver's door.
XClose the front-passenger door, the reardoors and the tailgate.
XPress the locking button on the driver’s door(Ypage 75).
XCheck whether the locking knobs on thefront-passenger door and the rear doors arestill visible. Press down the locking knobs byhand, if necessary.
XClose the driver's door.
XTake the mechanical key out of the Smart-Key (Ypage 71).
XInsert the mechanical key into the lock ofthe driver's door as far as it will go.
XTurn the mechanical key clockwise as far asit will go to positionG.
XTurn the mechanical key back and removeit.
XMake sure that the doors and the tailgateare locked.
XInsert mechanical key into the SmartKey(Ypage 72).
iIf you lock the vehicle as described above,the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-theft alarm system is not armed.

GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
during automatic closing of the tailgate.
Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process.
There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of
the closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey.
Rpull or press the remote operating switch
on the driver's door.
Rpress the close button or STOP button on
the tailgate.
Rpull the handle on the tailgate.
GDANGER
Combustion engines emit poisonous
exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide.
Exhaust gases can enter the vehicle interior
if the tailgate is open while the engine is
running, especially if the vehicle is in
motion. There is a risk of poisoning.
Always switch off the engine before opening
the tailgate. Never drive with the tailgate
open.

It is possible to make use of the residual heatof the engine to continue heating the vehiclefor approximately 30 minutes after the enginehas been switched off. The heating timedepends on the set interior temperature.
iThe blower will run at a low speed regard-less of the airflow setting.
iIf you activate the residual heat function athigh temperatures, only the ventilation willbe activated. The blower runs at mediumspeed.
iYou cannot use the ventilation to cool thevehicle interior to a temperature lower thanthe outside temperature.
Activating/deactivating
XTurn the SmartKey to positionZin the igni-tion lock or remove it (Ypage 125).
XPress theKbutton.The indicator lamp in theKbutton lightsup or goes out.
The indicator lamp in the button indicatesthat the respective function is activated.
iResidual heat is deactivated automatically:
Rafter approximately 30 minutes
Rwhen the ignition is switched on
Rif the battery voltage drops
Air vents
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Very hot or very cold air can flow from the
air vents. This could result in burns or frost-
bite in the immediate vicinity of the air
vents. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that all vehicle occupants always
maintain a sufficient distance to the air out-
lets. If necessary, redirect the airflow to
another area of the vehicle interior.
In order to ensure the direct flow of fresh airthrough the air vents into the vehicle interior,please observe the following notes:
Rkeep the air inlet between the windshieldand the hood free of blockages, such as ice,snow or leaves.
Rnever cover the air vents or air intake grillesin the vehicle interior.
iFor optimal climate control in the vehicle,open the air vents completely and set theadjusters to the central position.

If you operate information systems and com-
munication equipment integrated in the
vehicle when driving, you may be distracted
from the traffic situation. You could also
lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of
an accident.
Only operate this equipment when the traffic
situation permits. If you are not sure that
this is possible, park the vehicle paying
attention to traffic conditions and operate
the equipment when the vehicle is station-
ary.
You must observe the legal requirements forthe country in which you are currently drivingwhen operating the on-board computer.
GWARNING
If the instrument cluster has failed or mal-
functioned, you may not recognize function
restrictions in systems relevant to safety.
The operating safety of your vehicle may be
impaired. There is a risk of an accident.
Drive on carefully. Have the vehicle checked
at a qualified specialist workshop immedi-
ately.
The on-board computer only shows messagesor warnings from certain systems in the multi-function display. You should therefore makesure your vehicle is operating safely at alltimes.
If the operating safety of your vehicle isimpaired, pull over as soon as it is safe to doso. Contact a qualified specialist workshop.

Displays and operation
Instrument cluster lighting
The light sensor in the instrument cluster auto-matically controls the brightness of the multi-function display. In daylight, the displays in theinstrument cluster are not illuminated.
The lighting in the instrument cluster, in thedisplays and the controls in the vehicle interiorcan be adjusted using the brightness controlknob.
The brightness control knob is located on thebottom left of the instrument cluster(Ypage 32).
XTurn the brightness control knob clockwiseor counter-clockwise.If the light switch is set to theX,`orXposition, the brightness is dependentupon the brightness of the ambient light.
Speedometer with segments
The speedometer is only divided into seg-ments in vehicles with Active Distance AssistDISTRONIC.
The segments in the speedometer indicatewhich speed range is available.
RActive Distance Assist DISTRONIC activated(Ypage 158):
One or two segments in the set speed rangelight up.
RActive Distance Assist DISTRONIC detects avehicle in front moving more slowly than thestored speed:
The segments between the speed of thevehicle in front and the stored speed lightup.
Tachometer
!Do not drive in the overrevving range, asthis could damage the engine.
The red band in the tachometer indicates theengine's overrevving range.
The engine is limited within a range to protectthe engine when the red band is reached.
Outside temperature display
You should pay special attention to road con-ditions when temperatures are around freezingpoint.
Bear in mind that the outside temperature dis-play indicates the temperature measured anddoes not record the road temperature.

Example: engine oil cap
XTurn capCcounter-clockwise and removeit.
XAdd engine oil.If the oil level is at or below the MIN markon the oil dipstick, add 1.1 US qt (1.0 liter)of engine oil.
XReplace capCon the filler neck and turnclockwise.Ensure that the cap locks into placesecurely.
XCheck the oil level again with the oil dipstick(Ypage 274).

products
Checking coolant level
GWARNING
The cooling system is pressurized, particu-
larly when the motor is warm. If you open
the cap, you could be scalded if hot coolant
sprays out. There is a risk of injury.
Let the engine cool down before you open
the cap. Wear protective gloves and protec-
tive eyewear when opening. Open the cap
slowly to release pressure.
!The coolant level must only be checkedand corrected when the engine has cooleddown (coolant temperature under 104 ‡(40 †). Checking the coolant level when thecoolant temperature is over 104 ‡ (40 †)can lead to damage to the engine or theengine cooling system.
XPark the vehicle on a level surface.
Only check the coolant level when the vehi-cle is on a level surface and the engine hascooled down.
XTurn the SmartKey to positionHin the igni-tion lock (Ypage 125).
XCheck the coolant temperature display inthe instrument cluster.The coolant temperature must be below104 ‡ (40 †).
XTurn the SmartKey to positionZ(Ypage 125) in the ignition lock .
XSlowly turn capCcounter-clockwise and torelieve excess pressure.
XTurn capCfurther counter-clockwise andremove it.If the coolant is at the level of marker bar

For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-mends that you only use batteries which havebeen tested and approved for your vehicle byMercedes-Benz. These batteries provideincreased impact protection to prevent vehicleoccupants from suffering acid burns shouldthe battery be damaged in the event of anaccident.
In order for the battery to achieve the maxi-mum possible service life, it must always besufficiently charged.
Like other batteries, the vehicle battery maydischarge over time if you do not use the vehi-cle. In this case, have the battery disconnec-ted at a qualified specialist workshop. You canalso charge the battery with a charger recom-mended by Mercedes-Benz. Contact a quali-fied specialist workshop for further informa-tion.
Have the battery condition of charge checkedmore frequently if you use the vehicle mainlyfor short trips or if you leave it standing idlefor a lengthy period. Consult a qualified spe-cialist workshop if you wish to leave your vehi-cle parked for a long period of time.
Only replace a battery with a battery that hasbeen recommended by Mercedes-Benz.
Remove the SmartKey if you park the vehicleand do not require any electrical consumers.The vehicle will then use very little energy,thus conserving battery power.
If the power supply has been interrupted, e.g.if you reconnect the battery, you will have to:
Rset the clock using the multimedia system(see the Digital Operator's Manual)
Rreset the function for folding the exteriormirrors in/out automatically, by folding themirrors out once (Ypage 99)
Charging the battery
GWARNING
During charging and jump-starting, explosive
gases can escape from the battery. There is
a risk of an explosion.
Particularly avoid fire, open flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Ensure there is suffi-
cient ventilation while charging and jump-
starting. Do not lean over a battery.
GWARNING
Battery acid is caustic. There is a risk of
injury.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Do
not inhale any battery gases. Do not lean
over the battery. Keep children away from
batteries. Wash away battery acid immedi-
ately with plenty of clean water and seek
medical attention.
GWARNING
A discharged battery can freeze at tempera-
tures below freezing point. When jump-start-
ing the vehicle or charging the battery,
gases can escape from the battery. There is
a risk of an explosion.
Allow the frozen battery to thaw out before
charging it or jump-starting.
!Only use battery chargers with a maximumcharging voltage of 14.8 V.
!Only charge the battery using the jump-starting connection point.
The jump-starting connection point is in theengine compartment (Ypage 295).
XOpen the hood.
XConnect the battery charger to the positiveterminal and ground point in the same orderas when connecting the donor battery in thejump-starting procedure (Ypage 295).
If the indicator/warning lamps do not light upin the instrument cluster at low temperatures,it is very likely that the discharged battery hasfrozen. In this case you may neither jump-startthe vehicle nor charge the battery. The servicelife of a thawed-out battery may be shorter.The starting characteristics can be impaired,

The battery must be connected and charged.Otherwise, you:
Rcannot turn the SmartKey to positionHinthe ignition lock.
Rcannot release the electric parking brake.
Rcannot shift the transmission to position\\.
The function of the electric parking brake andthe parking lock is dependent on the on-boardvoltage.
If the on-board voltage is low or if there is asystem malfunction:
Rthe electric parking brake may not beapplied in certain circumstances, or
Rit may no longer be possible to shift thetransmission to position]
Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. theradio.
Deactivate the automatic locking featurebefore the vehicle is towed (Ypage 199). Youcould otherwise be locked out when pushingor towing the vehicle.
Installing/removing the towing eye

The brackets for the screw-in towing eye arelocated in the bumpers. They are at the rearand at the front, under coversC.
XRemove the towing eye from the stowagespace.
The towing eye is located with the vehicletool kit under the cargo compartment floor(Ypage 287).
Vehicles with the TIREFIT kit: the towing eyeis beneath the tire inflation compressor(Ypage 287).
XPress the mark on coverCinwards in thedirection of the arrow.
XTake coverCoff the opening.
XScrew in the towing eye clockwise to thestop.
Removing the towing eye
XUnscrew and remove the towing eye.
XAttach coverCto the bumper and pressuntil it engages.
XPlace the towing eye in the stowage wellbeneath the cargo compartment floor in thecargo compartment (Ypage 287).
XVehicles with the TIREFIT kit: put back thetire inflation compressor (Ypage 287).
Towing the vehicle with the front
axle raised
Observe the important safety notes when tow-ing your vehicle with the front axle raised(Ypage 298).
Only vehicles without 4MATIC can betowed with the front axle raised.
!Vehicles with 4MATIC must not be towedwith either the front or the rear axle raised,as doing so will damage the transmission.
Vehicles with 4MATIC may either be towedaway with both axles on the ground or be loa-ded up and transported.
!The ignition must be switched off if thevehicle is being towed with the front axle
raised. Otherwise, ESP®may intervene anddamage the brake system.
XOn vehicles with KEYLESS-GO or theKEYLESS-GO start function:you must usethe SmartKey instead of the Start/Stop but-ton (Ypage 126).
XMake sure that the vehicle is stationary.
