Overview of climate control systems
General notes
Observe the settings recommended on the fol-lowing pages. The windows could otherwisefog up.
To prevent the windows from fogging up:
Rswitch off climate control only briefly
Rswitch on air-recirculation mode only briefly
Rswitch on the cooling with air dehumidifica-tion function
Rswitch on the defrost windshield functionbriefly, if required
The air-conditioning system or dual-zone auto-matic climate control regulates the tempera-ture and the humidity of the vehicle interiorand filters undesirable substances from theair.
The air-conditioning system or dual-zone auto-matic climate control can only be operatedwhen the engine is running. Optimum opera-tion is only achieved with the side windowsand panorama roof with power tilt/slidingpanel closed.
If you start the engine using your smartphone,the last selected climate control setting isreactivated (Ypage 84).
The residual heat function can only be activa-ted or deactivated with the ignition switchedoff (Ypage 122).
Always keep the ventilation flaps behind theside trim panel in the cargo compartmentclear (Ypage 108). Otherwise the vehicle willnot be ventilated correctly.
iVentilate the vehicle for a brief period dur-ing warm weather, e.g. using the conveni-ence opening feature (Ypage 84). This willspeed up the cooling process and thedesired interior temperature will be reachedmore quickly.
iThe integrated filter filters out most parti-cles of dust and soot and completely filtersout pollen. It also reduces gaseous pollu-tants and odors. A clogged filter reduces theamount of air supplied to the vehicle inte-rior. For this reason, you should alwaysobserve the interval for replacing the filter,which is specified in the Maintenance Book-let. As it depends on environmental condi-tions, e.g. heavy air pollution, the intervalmay be shorter than stated in the Mainte-nance Booklet.
iIt is possible that under certain circum-stances the residual heat function may beactivated automatically an hour after theSmartKey has been removed in order to drythe automatic climate control. The vehicle isthen ventilated for 30 minutes.

ECO start/stop function
During automatic engine switch-off, the cli-mate control system only operates at areduced capacity. If you require the full cli-mate control output, you can switch off theECO start/stop function by pressing the ECObutton (Ypage 130).

iThe "Windshield defrosting" function auto-matically sets the blower level to the opti-mum defrosting effect. As a result, the air-flow may increase or decrease automaticallyafter thedbutton is pressed.
iYou can adjust the blower level manuallywhile the "Windshield defrosting" function isin operation:

Rear window defroster
General notes
The rear window defroster has a high currentdraw. You should therefore switch it off assoon as the rear window is clear. Otherwise,the rear window defroster switches off auto-matically after several minutes.
If the battery voltage is too low, the rear win-dow defroster may switch off.

Problems with the rear window defroster

Switching air-recirculation mode

General notes
You can deactivate the flow of fresh air ifunpleasant odors are entering the vehicle fromoutside. The air already inside the vehicle willthen be recirculated.
If you switch on air-recirculation mode, thewindows can fog up more quickly, in particularat low temperatures. Only use air-recirculationmode briefly to prevent the windows from fog-ging up.
The operation of air-recirculation mode is thesame for all control panels.

It is possible to make use of the residual heatof the engine to continue heating the vehiclefor approximately 30 minutes after the enginehas been switched off. The heating timedepends on the set interior temperature.
iThe blower will run at a low speed regard-less of the airflow setting.
iIf you activate the residual heat function athigh temperatures, only the ventilation willbe activated. The blower runs at mediumspeed.
iYou cannot use the ventilation to cool thevehicle interior to a temperature lower thanthe outside temperature.

Important safety notes
GWARNING
Very hot or very cold air can flow from the
air vents. This could result in burns or frost-
bite in the immediate vicinity of the air
vents. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that all vehicle occupants always
maintain a sufficient distance to the air out-
lets. If necessary, redirect the airflow to
another area of the vehicle interior.
In order to ensure the direct flow of fresh airthrough the air vents into the vehicle interior,please observe the following notes:
Rkeep the air inlet between the windshieldand the hood free of blockages, such as ice,snow or leaves.
Rnever cover the air vents or air intake grillesin the vehicle interior.
iFor optimal climate control in the vehicle,open the air vents completely and set theadjusters to the central position.

GWARNING
Limbs could be crushed or trapped if the
engine is started unintentionally during ser-
vice or maintenance work. There is a risk of
injury.
Always secure the engine against uninten-
tional starting before carrying out mainte-
nance or repair work.
Make sure that the engine cannot be startedvia your smartphone before carrying out main-tenance or repairs. You can prevent an enginestart via your smartphone, for example, if you:
Rswitch on the hazard warning lamps
Rdo not lock the doors
Ropen the hood
Pulling away
General notes
GWARNING
If the engine speed is above the idling speed
and you engage transmission position:
orF, the vehicle could pull away sud-
denly. There is a risk of an accident.
When engaging transmission position:
orF, always firmly depress the brake
pedal and do not simultaneously accelerate.
Depress the accelerator carefully when pullingaway.
The vehicle locks centrally once you havepulled away. The locking knobs in the doorsdrop down.
You can open the doors from the inside at anytime.
You can also deactivate the automatic lockingfeature (Ypage 199).
Vehicles with automatic transmission:it ispossible to shift the transmission from posi-
tion]to the desired position only if youdepress the brake pedal. Only then can theparking lock be deactivated.
All vehicles (except Mercedes-AMG vehi-cles):if you do not depress the brake pedal,the DIRECT SELECT lever can still be movedbut the parking lock remains engaged.
Mercedes-AMG vehicles:if you do notdepress the brake pedal, the selector lever canstill be moved but the parking lock remainsengaged.
At transmission fluid temperatures below

GWARNING
Fuels are toxic and harmful to health. There
is a risk of injury.
You must avoid fuels coming into contact
with skin, eyes and clothes or being swal-
lowed.
Do not inhale the fuel vapors. Keep children
away from fuels.
Keep doors and windows closed during the
refueling process.
If you or others come into contact with fuel,
observe the following points:
RImmediately rinse the fuel off your skin
with soap and water.
RIf you get fuel into your eyes, immediately
rinse your eyes throughly with clean
water. Seek medical attention immedi-
ately.
RSeek medical attention immediately if fuel
has been swallowed. Do not induce vomit-
ing.
RImmediately change out of clothing which
has come into contact with fuel.
GWARNING
Electrostatic charging can lead to the crea-
tion of sparks and ignite fuel vapor. There is
a risk of fire and explosion.
Touch the metallic body of the vehicle
before you open the fuel filler cap or handle
the pump nozzle. Any possible electrostatic
charge present will in this way be depleted.
Do not get into the vehicle again during the
refueling process. Otherwise, electrostatic
charge could build up again.
!Do not use diesel to refuel vehicles with agasoline engine. Do not switch on the igni-tion if you accidentally refuel with the wrongfuel. Otherwise, the fuel will enter the fuelsystem. Even small amounts of the wrongfuel could result in damage to the fuel sys-tem and the engine. Notify a qualified spe-cialist workshop and have the fuel tank andfuel lines drained completely.
!Overfilling the fuel tank could damage thefuel system.
!Take care not to spill any fuel on paintedsurfaces. You could otherwise damage thepaintwork.
!Use a filter when adding fuel from a fuelcan. The fuel lines and/or the fuel injectionsystem could otherwise be blocked by parti-cles from the fuel can.
Do not get into the vehicle again during therefueling process. Otherwise, electrostaticcharge could build up again.
If you overfill the fuel tank, fuel could sprayout when the fuel pump nozzle is removed.

Refueling
General information
Pay attention to the important safety notes(Ypage 142).
The fuel filler flap is unlocked/locked automat-ically when you unlock/lock the vehicle withthe SmartKey.
