Thesideairbagsystemsupplementsthesafety
beltsandcanhelptoreducetheriskofinjuryto
thedriver'sandfrontpassenger'suppertorsoon
thesideofthevehiclethatisstruckinasidecol-
lision.Theairbagdeploysinsideimpactsandon-
lywhenthevehicleaccelerationregisteredby the
controlunitishighenough.Ifthisrateisbelow
thereferencevalueprogrammedintothecontrol
unit,thesideairbagswillnotbetriggered,even
thoughthecarmaybebadlydamagedasaresult
ofthecollision.Itisnotpossibletodefineanair-
bagtriggeringrangethatwillcovereverypossi-
bleangleofimpact,sincethecircumstanceswill
varyconsiderablybetweenonecollisionandan-

theangleofimpact,vehiclespeed,etc.

airbagswilldeployonlyonceandonlyincertain
kindsofaccidents-yoursafetybeltsarealways
theretoofferprotection.
Vehicledamage,repaircostsoreventhelackof
vehicledamagearenotnecessarilyanindication
ofover-sensitiveorfailedairbagactivation.In
somecollisions,bothfrontandsideairbagsmay
inflate.Remembertoo,thatairbagswilldeploy
onlyonceandonlyincertainkindsofcollisions-
yoursafetybeltsarealwaystheretoofferprotec-
tioninthoseaccidentsinwhichairbagsarenot
supposedtodeployorwhentheyhavealready
deployed.
Thesideairbagsystemwillnotdeploy:

Childrestraintsofthesametypetypicallyhave
differentweightsandsizesanddifferent“foot-
prints”,thesizeandshapeofthebottomofthe
childrestraintthatsitsontheseat,whenthey
areinstalledonavehicleseat.Thesedifferences
make
itvirtuallyimpossibletocertifycompliance
withtherequirementsforadvancedairbagswith
eachandeverychildrestraintthathaseverbeen
soldinthepastorwillbesoldoverthecourseof
theusefullifeofyourvehicle.
Forthisreason,theUnitedStatesNationalHigh-
wayTrafficSafetyAdministrationhaspublisheda
listofspecifictype,makesandmodelsofchild
