Driving in cold weather
Check your vehicle before the approach of cold weather.
The following advice is worth noting:
• Make sure that the engine coolant (p. 342) contains 50 percent antifreeze. Any othermixture will reduce freeze protection. Thisgives protection against freezing down to–31 °F (–35 °C). The use of "recycled" anti-freeze is not approved by Volvo. Differenttypes of antifreeze must not be mixed.
• Volvo recommends using only genuine Volvoantifreeze in your vehicle's radiator.
• Try to keep the fuel tank well filled – thishelps prevent the formation of condensationin the tank. In addition, in extremely coldweather conditions it is worthwhile to addfuel line de-icer before refueling.
• The viscosity of the engine oil is important.Oil with low viscosity (thinner oil) improvescold-weather starting as well as decreasingfuel consumption while the engine is warm-ing up. Full synthetic 0W-30 oil is recom-mended for driving in areas with sustainedlow temperatures.
• The load placed on the battery is greater dur-ing the winter since the windshield wipers,lighting, etc., are used more often. Moreover,the capacity of the battery decreases as thetemperature drops. In very cold weather, apoorly charged battery can freeze and be damaged. It is therefore advisable to checkthe state of charge more frequently andspray an anti-rust oil on the battery posts.
• Volvo recommends the use of snow tires onall four wheels for winter driving, see Snowtires/studded tires (p. 316).
• To prevent the washer fluid (p. 354)reservoirfrom freezing, add washer solvents contain-ing antifreeze. This is important since dirt isoften splashed on the windshield during win-ter driving, requiring the frequent use of thewashers and wipers. Volvo Washer Solventshould be diluted as follows: Down to 14 °F(–10 °C): 1 part washer solvent and 4 partswater Down to 5 °F (–15 °C): 1 part washersolvent and 3 parts water Down to 0 °F(–18 °C): 1 part washer solvent and 2 partswater Down to –18 °F (–28 °C): 1 partwasher solvent and 1 part water.
• Use Volvo Teflon Lock Spray in the locks.
• Avoid using de-icing sprays as they cancause damage to the locks.
Refueling – fuel requirements
Volvo recommends the use of detergent gaso- line to control engine deposits.
Deposit control gasoline (detergent
additives)
Detergent gasoline is effective in keeping injec- tors and intake valves clean. Consistent use ofdeposit control gasolines will help ensure gooddrivability and fuel economy. If you are not surewhether the gasoline contains deposit controladditives, check with the service station operator.
NOTE
Volvo does not recommend the use of exter- nal fuel injector cleaning systems.
Unleaded fuelEach Volvo has a three-way catalytic converter and must use only unleaded gasoline. U.S. andCanadian regulations require that pumps deliver-ing unleaded gasoline be labeled "UNLEADED".Only these pumps have nozzles which fit yourvehicle's filler inlet. It is unlawful to dispense lea-ded fuel into a vehicle labeled "unleaded gaso-line only". Leaded gasoline damages the three-way catalytic converter and the heated oxygensensor system. Repeated use of leaded gasolinewill lessen the effectiveness of the emission con-trol system (p. 290) and could result in loss ofemission warranty coverage. State and local vehi-

Towing the vehicle Always check with state and local authorities before attempting to tow another vehiclebecause this type of towing is subject to regula-tions regarding maximum towing speed, lengthand type of towing device, lighting, etc.
1. With the remote key fully pressed into theignition slot 15
, press START/STOP ENGINE
for approximately 2 seconds to activate igni- tion mode II.
2. The remote key must remain in the ignition slot16
for the entire time that the vehicle is
being towed.
3. Keep the tow rope taut when the towing vehicle slows down by applying light pressure on the brake pedal. This will help prevent jar-ring movements of the vehicle being towed.
4. Be prepared to apply the brakes to stop the vehicle being towed.

General towing precautions:
• Please check with state and local author- ities before attempting this type of tow-ing, as vehicles being towed are subjectto regulations regarding maximum towingspeed, length and type of towing device,lighting, etc.

• Maximum speed: 50 mph (80 km/h). Do not exceed the maximum allowable tow-ing speed.
• Maximum distance with front wheels onground: 50 miles (80 km).
• The vehicle should only be towed in theforward direction.

Maintenance – owner maintenance
Periodic maintenance requirements and intervals are described in your vehicle's Warranty andService Records Information booklet. The following points can be carried out between the normally scheduled maintenance services.
Owner maintenance
Each time the car is refueled:
• Check the engine oil level.
• Clean the windshield, windshield wipers, headlights, and taillights.
Monthly:
• Check cold tire pressure in all tires. Inspect the tires for wear.
• Check that engine coolant and other fluidlevels are between the indicated "min" and"max" markings.
• Clean interior glass surfaces with a glasscleaner and soft paper towels.
• Wipe driver information displays with a softcloth.
• Visually inspect battery terminals for corro-sion. Corrosion may indicate a loose terminalconnector, or a battery near the end of itsuseful service life. Consult your Volvo retailerfor additional information.
As needed:
Wash the car, including the undercarriage, to reduce wear that can be caused by a buildup of dirt, and corrosion that can be caused by salt res-idues. Clean leaves and twigs from air intake vents at the base of the windshield, and from other placeswhere they may collect.

Onboard Diagnostic System OBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. It stores diagnosticinformation about your vehicle's emission con-trols. It can light the Check Engine light (MIL) if itdetects an emission control "fault." A "fault" is acomponent or system that is not performingwithin an expected range. A fault may be perma-nent or temporary. OBD II will store a messageabout any fault.
Emission inspection readiness
How do states use OBD II for emission inspections?
Many states connect a computer directly to a vehicle's OBD II system. The inspector can thenread "faults." In some states, this type of inspec-tion has replaced the tailpipe emission test.
How can my vehicle fail OBD II emission inspection?
Your vehicle can fail OBD II emission inspection for any of the following reasons.
• If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit, yourvehicle may fail inspection.
• If your vehicle's Check Engine light was lit,but went out without any action on your part,OBD II will still have a recorded fault. Yourvehicle may pass or fail, depending on theinspection practices in your area.
• If you had recent service that required dis-connecting the battery, OBD II diagnostic information may be incomplete and "notready" for inspection. A vehicle that is notready may fail inspection.
How can I prepare for my next OBD II
emission inspection?
• If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit – or was lit but went out without service, have yourvehicle diagnosed and, if necessary, servicedby a qualified Volvo technician.
• If you recently had service for a lit CheckEngine light, or if you had service thatrequired disconnecting the battery, a periodof driving is necessary to bring the OBD IIsystem to "ready" for inspection. Two half-hour trips of mixed stop-and-go/highwaydriving are typically needed to allow OBD II toreach readiness. Your Volvo retailer can pro-vide you with more information on planning atrip.
• Maintain your vehicle in accordance with yourvehicle's maintenance schedule.
Booking service and repairs
Connected Service Booking (CSB) makes set- ting up a time for service, maintenance and/orrepairs directly from the vehicle quick and con-venient.
Prerequisites
• The owner (primary driver) must have a valid Volvo ID. See Volvo ID (p. 22) for additionalinformation.
• The vehicle must be connected to the Inter- net using a paired Bluetooth ®
cell phone.

(park) position. If the engine has been run- ning, wait until it has cooled before touchingany components in the engine compartment. The distributor ignition system operates at very high voltages. Special safety precautionsmust be followed to prevent injury. Alwaysturn the ignition off when:
• Replacing distributor ignition components e.g. plugs, coil, etc.
• Do not touch any part of the distributorignition system while the engine is run-ning. This may result in unintended move-ments and body injury.

Engine compartment – washer fluid
Washer fluid helps keep the windshield and headlights clean. During cold weather, the reser-voir should be filled with windshield washer sol-vent containing antifreeze. Use Volvo OriginalWasher Fluid or the equivalent with a recom-mended pH value between 6 and 8.
Location of the washer fluid reservoir
The windshield and headlight washers share a common reservoir. The washer fluid reservoir is located on the driv- er's side of the engine compartment. For capaci-ties, see the printed Owner's Manual. Specification: Use a washer antifreeze recom-

The battery's service life is affected by the num- ber of starts, if it has been discharged, drivingstyle, driving conditions, weather conditions ,etc.
Handling
• Check that the battery cables are correctly connected and tightened.
• Never disconnect the battery when theengine is running (for example, when replac-ing the battery).

Proper battery maintenance can help prolong its service life.
Maintenance
• Use a screw driver to open the caps or cover and a flashlight to inspect the level.
• If necessary, add distilled water. The levelshould never be above the indicator.
• The fluid level should be checked if the bat-tery has been recharged.
• After inspection, be sure the cap over eachbattery cell or the cover is securely in place.
• Check that the battery cables are correctlyconnected and properly tightened.
• Never disconnect the battery when theengine is running, or when the key is in theignition. This could damage the vehicle'selectrical system.
• The battery should be disconnected from thevehicle when a battery charger is useddirectly on the battery.
• To help keep the battery in good condition,the vehicle should be driven for at least 15minutes a week or connected to a chargerwith an automatic charging function.
• If the battery is fully discharged a number oftimes, this may shorten its service life. Keep-ing the battery fully charged helps prolong itsservice life. •
