Locking/unlocking confirmation Settings can be made in the menu system for audible and visual confirmation when the vehiclehas been locked or unlocked. With these func-tions activated, the following will occur when thevehicle is locked/unlocked:
Locking confirmation
• The turn signals flash once, an audible signal sounds and the door mirrors will fold
* in.
Confirmation will only be given when all doors and the trunk are properly closed and locked.
NOTE
If you do not receive confirmation when lock- ing the vehicle, check whether a door or thetrunk is ajar, or if this feature has been turnedoff in the menu.
Unlocking confirmation
• The turn signals will flash twice and the door mirrors will fold
* out.
Making a setting
Different alternatives for locking/unlocking con- firmation can be selected in the menus by press- ing MY CAR on the center console control panel.
• To activate visual confirmation: go to
SettingsCar settingsLight settingsand select Door lock confirmation light
and/or Unlock confirmation light by
pressing OK/MENU .
• To activate audible confirmation: go to

Lock indicator
Lock/alarm indicator light
A flashing indicator light at the base of the wind- shield verifies that the vehicle is locked.

Immobilizer (start inhibitor)
The immobilizer is a start inhibitor that helps pre- vent unauthorized persons from starting theengine. Each of the keys supplied with your vehicle con- tains a coded transponder. The code in the keyis transmitted to an antenna in the ignition slotwhere it is compared to the code stored in thestart inhibitor module. The vehicle will start onlywith a properly coded key. If you misplace a key,take the other keys to a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician for reprogramming asan anti-theft measure. The following messages(which may appear in the instrument panel dis-play) are related to the immobilizer:

Alarm – general information
The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle. The alarm is automatically armed (p. 163) whenever the vehicle is locked with the remotekey. When armed, the alarm continuously monitors a number of points on the vehicle. The followingconditions will trigger the alarm:
• The hood is forced open.
• The trunk is forced open
• A door is forced open.
• The ignition slot is tampered with.
• An attempt is made to start the vehicle with a non-approved key (a key not coded to thecar's ignition).
• The battery is disconnected (while the alarmis armed).
• The siren is disconnected when the alarm isdisarmed.
A message will appear in the information displayif a fault should occur in the alarm system. Con-tact a trained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
NOTE
Do not attempt to repair any of the compo- nents in the alarm system yourself. This couldaffect the insurance policy on the vehicle.

Alarm indicator
The status of the alarm system is indicated by the red indicator light on the dashboard (seeillustration):
• Indicator light off: the alarm is not armed (p. 163)

Some U.S. and Canadian gasolines contain an octane enhancing additive called methyl-cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl(MMT). If such fuels are used, your EmissionControl System performance may be affected,and the Check Engine Light (malfunctionindicator light) located on your instrumentpanel may light. If this occurs, please returnyour vehicle to a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician for service.
Gasoline containing alcohol and ethers, "Oxygenated fuels"
Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing "oxygenates" which are usually alcohols orethers. In some areas, state or local laws requirethat the service pump be marked indicating useof alcohols or ethers. However, there are areas inwhich the pumps are unmarked. If you are notsure whether there is alcohol or ethers in thegasoline you buy, check with the service stationoperator. To meet seasonal air quality standards,some areas require the use of "oxygenated" fuel. Volvo allows the use of the following "oxygen- ated" fuels; however, the octane ratings (p. 278)listed must still be met.
Alcohol – Ethanol
Fuels containing up to 10% ethanol by volume may be used. Ethanol may also be referred to asEthyl alcohol, or "Gasohol". Ethers – MTBE: Fuels containing up to 15% MTBE may be used.
MethanolDo not use gasolines containing methanol(methyl alcohol, wood alcohol). This practice canresult in vehicle performance deterioration andcan damage critical parts in the fuel system. Suchdamage may not be covered under the NewVehicle Limited Warranty.
Refueling – octane rating Volvo recommends premium fuel for best per- formance, but using 87 octane

or above will
not affect engine reliability.

Tires – storage and ageWhen storing complete wheels (tires mounted on rims), they should be suspended off the flooror placed on their sides on the floor.
New Tires
Remember that tires are perishable goods. As of 2000, the manufacturing week and year (Depart-ment of Transportation (DOT) stamp) will be indi-cated with 4 digits (e.g., 1513 means that the tireillustrated was manufactured during week 15 of2013).
Tire ageTires degrade over time, even when they are not being used. It is recommended that tires gener-ally be replaced after 6 years of normal service.Heat caused by hot climates, frequent high load-ing conditions or Ultra Violet (U.V.) exposure can accelerate the aging process. The temporary spare

should also be replaced at 6-year inter-
vals, even if it has never been used. A tire's age can be determined by the DOT stamp on the sidewall (see the illustration). A tire with e.g., visible cracks or discoloration should be replaced immediately.
Storing wheels and tiresWhen storing completes wheels (tires mountedon rims), they should be suspended off the flooror placed on their sides on the floor. Tires not mounted on rims should be stored on their sides or standing upright, but should not besuspended.
CAUTION
Tires should preferably be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, and should never be stored inclose proximity to solvents, gasoline, oils, etc.

• The wheel and tire sizes for your Volvo are specified to meet stringent stabilityand handling requirements. Unapprovedwheel/tire size combinations can nega-tively affect your vehicle's stability andhandling.

Tires – tread wear indicator The tires have wear indicator strips running across or parallel to the tread.

The letters TWI are printed on the side of the tire.
When approximately 1/16" (1.6 mm) is left on the tread, these strips become visible and indi-cate that the tire should be replaced. Tires withless than 1/16" (1.6 mm) tread offer very poortraction. When replacing worn tires, it is recommended that the tire be identical in type (radial) and sizeas the one being replaced. Using a tire of thesame make (manufacturer) will prevent alterationof the driving characteristics of the vehicle.

Tires – tire economy
A smooth driving style and correct inflation pres- sure can help prolong the tires' service life.
• Maintain correct tire pressure. The tire infla- tion table, see the tire inflation decal on thedriver's door opening.
• Avoid fast starts, hard braking and tirescreeching.
• Tire wear increases with speed.
• Correct front wheel alignment is very impor-tant.
• Unbalanced wheels impair tire economy anddriving comfort.
• Tires must maintain the same direction ofrotation throughout their lifetime.
• When replacing tires, the tires with the mosttread should be mounted on the rear wheelsto reduce the chance of oversteer duringhard braking.
• Hitting curbs or potholes can damage thetires and/or wheels permanently.

system that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale (
) when one or more of your tires is signifi-
cantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pressure telltale illuminates, you should stopand check your tires as soon as possible, andinflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated tire cau- ses the tire to overheat and can lead to tire fail-ure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiencyand tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle'shandling and stopping ability. Please note that atire pressure monitoring system is not a substi-tute for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driv-er's responsibility to maintain correct tire pres-sure, even if under-inflation has not reached thelevel to trigger illumination of the system's lowtire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when thesystem is not operating properly. The monitoringsystem's malfunction indicator is combined withthe low tire pressure telltale. When the system detects a malfunction, the tell- tale will flash for approximately one minute andthen remain continuously illuminated. Thissequence will continue upon subsequent vehiclestart-ups as long as the malfunction exists. Whenthe malfunction indicator is illuminated, the sys-tem may not be able to detect or signal low tirepressure as intended. System malfunctions may occur for a variety ofreasons, including the installation of replacementor alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle thatprevent the tire pressure monitoring system fromfunctioning properly. Always check the system's malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels onyour vehicle to ensure that the replacement oralternate tires and wheels allow the system tocontinue to function properly.
NOTE
The system indicates low tire pressure but does not replace normal tire maintenance. Forinformation on correct tire pressure, pleaserefer to the tire inflation decal on the driver'sdoor opening or consult your Volvo retailer.
WARNING
Incorrect inflation pressure could lead to tire failure, resulting in a loss of control of thevehicle.

Tire Monitor - introduction Tire Monitor uses the rotational speed of the tires in combination with signal analysis of theABS sensor signals to determine if they areproperly inflated.
When a tire is under-inflated, its diameter (and consequently also its rotational speed) changes.By comparing the individual tires with each otherit is possible to determine if one or more tires areunder inflated. When low inflation pressure is detected or if the system is not functioning properly, Tire Monitorwill light up the tire pressure warning light (
) (also referred to as a telltale) in the
instrument panel and will display one of several messages in the text window, for example:

NOTE
If a malfunction occurs in the system, the tire pressure warning light will flash for approxi-mately 1 minute and then remain illuminated.

Maintenance – owner maintenance
Periodic maintenance requirements and intervals are described in your vehicle's Warranty andService Records Information booklet. The following points can be carried out between the normally scheduled maintenance services.
Owner maintenance
Each time the car is refueled:
• Check the engine oil level.
• Clean the windshield, windshield wipers, headlights, and taillights.
Monthly:
• Check cold tire pressure in all tires. Inspect the tires for wear.
• Check that engine coolant and other fluidlevels are between the indicated "min" and"max" markings.
• Clean interior glass surfaces with a glasscleaner and soft paper towels.
• Wipe driver information displays with a softcloth.
• Visually inspect battery terminals for corro-sion. Corrosion may indicate a loose terminalconnector, or a battery near the end of itsuseful service life. Consult your Volvo retailerfor additional information.
As needed:
Wash the car, including the undercarriage, to reduce wear that can be caused by a buildup of dirt, and corrosion that can be caused by salt res-idues. Clean leaves and twigs from air intake vents at the base of the windshield, and from other placeswhere they may collect.

Battery – maintenance
Proper battery maintenance can help prolong its service life.
Maintenance
• Use a screw driver to open the caps or cover and a flashlight to inspect the level.
• If necessary, add distilled water. The levelshould never be above the indicator.
• The fluid level should be checked if the bat-tery has been recharged.
• After inspection, be sure the cap over eachbattery cell or the cover is securely in place.
• Check that the battery cables are correctlyconnected and properly tightened.
• Never disconnect the battery when theengine is running, or when the key is in theignition. This could damage the vehicle'selectrical system.
• The battery should be disconnected from thevehicle when a battery charger is useddirectly on the battery.
• To help keep the battery in good condition,the vehicle should be driven for at least 15minutes a week or connected to a chargerwith an automatic charging function.
• If the battery is fully discharged a number oftimes, this may shorten its service life. Keep-ing the battery fully charged helps prolong itsservice life. •
The service life of a battery is affected byfactors such as driving conditions and cli-mate. Extreme cold may also furtherdecrease the battery
