its, thereby returning the engine to a normal condition. Be sure to use a MitsubishiMotors Genuine cleani

Filling the fuel tank
WA R N I N GWhen handling fuel, comply with the safety regulations displayed by garages and filling stations.
 Gasoline is highly flammable and explo- sive. You could be burned, seriouslyinjured or killed when handling it. Whenrefueling your vehicle,
always turn the
engine off and keep
away from flames,
sparks, and smoking materials. Alwayshandle fuel in well-ventilated outdoor areas. Before removing the fuel tank filler cap, be sure to get rid of your body’s static electricity by touching a metal part of thecar or fuel pump. Any
static electricity on
your body could create a spark that ignites fuel vapor. Perform the whole
refueling process
(opening the fuel tank filler door, remov-ing the fuel tank filler cap, etc.) by your- self; do not let any other person near the fuel tank filler. If you allowed a person tohelp you and that person was carrying static electricity,
fuel vapor could be
ignited. Do not move away from the fuel tank filler until refueling is fi
nished. If you moved
away and did something
else (for example,
sitting on a seat) part-way through the refueling process, you could pick up afresh charge of st
atic electricity.
Be careful not to inhale fuel vapor. Fuel contains toxic substances. Keep the doors and wi
ndows closed while
refueling the vehicle. If they were open, fuel vapor could get into the cabin.WA R N I N G

After several attempts

that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditi
oning blower and rear
window defogger, are turned off.
2. While depressing the brake pedal {contin- uously variable transmission (CVT)} orthe clutch pedal (manual transaxle), press the accelerator peda
l halfway and hold it
there, then crank the engine. Release theaccelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts. 3. If the engine still wi
ll not start, the engine
could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal (CVT) or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), push the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then press theengine switch to crank the engine. If the engine does not start after 5 to 6 seconds, push the engine switch to stop crankingthe engine, and release the accelerator pedal. Put the operation mode in OFF. Wait a few seconds, and then press theengine switch to cr
ank the engine again
while depressing the brake pedal (CVT) or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), butdo not push the accelerator pedal. If the engine fails to start, repeat these proce- dures. If the engine sti

NOTE
 After the engine has not started for a while, the brake pedal effort needed to start the engine may become grea
ter. If this occurs,
depress the brake pedal more firmly than usual.NOTE
 For vehicles equipped with a manual trans- axle, the engine will not start unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed (Clutch inter- lock). This is a safety feature.

could be flooded with too much gasoline.While depressing the brake pedal (CVT) or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), push the accelerator pedal all the waydown and hold it there, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 seconds. Return the igni- tion switch to the “OFF” position andrelease the accelerator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds while depressing the brake pedal (CVT) or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), but do not push theaccelerator pedal. Release the ignition switch if the engine starts. If the engine fails to start, repeat these procedures. Ifthe engine still will
not start, contact your
local Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choi
ce for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -4 °F (-20 °C) or lower, it may not be possible to start from a standstill even with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE)position. This phenomenon occurs because the trans- axle has not warmed up sufficiently; it does
not indicate a problem.
If this occurs, place
the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) positionand let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transaxle will wa
rm up, and you will be
able to start normally.Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.

Press the clutch pedal all the way down and shift into 1st or “R” (Reverse) position. Then gradually release the clutch pedal while depressing the accelerator pedal.

Your vehicle is equipped with power brakesfor more braking force with less brake pedaleffort. Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the power assist is not beingused. If the power assist is not being used, the effort needed to press the brake pedal is greater.If you should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes will still work.
If the power brake unit or either of the two brake hydraulic systems stops working prop-erly, the rest of the brake system will still work, but the vehicle will not slow down as quickly.You will know this has happened if you find you need to press the brake down farther, or harder when slowing down or stopping, or ifthe brake warning light and the warning dis- play in the multi-information display come on. Have the brake system repaired at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice immediately.
When the CVT makes no speed change

The brake assist system
is a device assisting
drivers who cannot depress the brake pedalfirmly such as in em
ergency stop situations
and provides greater braking force.
If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied
with more force than
usual.
• On vehicles with ma
nual transaxle, the
gearshift lever is in the following position.[When starting an uphi
ll slope forwards.]
The gearshift lever is in any position other than “R” (Reverse). (The hill start assist will operate, even if thegearshift lever is in the “N” (Neutral) posi- tion.) [When starting an uphill
slope backwards.]
The gearshift lever is in the “R” (Reverse) position. (The hill start assist
will not operate when
the gearshift lever is in the “N” (Neutral) position.) • On vehicles with CVT,
the selector lever is
in any position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). • The vehicle is comple
tely stationary, with
the brake pedal depressed. • The parking brake is released.  The hill start assist wi
ll not operate if the
accelerator pedal is
depressed before the
brake pedal is released.  The hill start assist also operates when reversing on an uphill slope.  When the hill start a
ssist is activated, you
may feel the operating sound or vibrationfrom under the body. This is a normal result of the hill start assist operation, and does not indicate a problem.NOTE

CAUTIONThe brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise
braking force greater
than its capacity. Make
sure to always keep a
sufficient distance be
tween your vehicle and
a vehicle in front of you without relying toomuch on the brake assist system.NOTE
 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released.To stop its operation, completely remove your foot from the brake pedal.  When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressed brake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in smallmotions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steering wheel vibrate. This occurs when the brakeassist system is ope
rating normally and does
not indicate faulty
operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal.  When the anti-lock brake system warning light is illuminated, th
e brake assist system is
not functioning.
