Parking with the engine run-
ning
Never leave the engine running while you
take a short sleep/rest. Also, never leave the engine running in a closed or poorly ventila-
ted place.
WARNINGl Leaving the engine running risks injury
or death from accidentally moving the
gearshift lever (with M/T) or the selector
lever (with A/T) or the accumulation of
toxic exhaust fumes on the passenger
compartment.Where you parkWARNINGl Do not park your vehicle in areas where
combustible materials such as dry grass
or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could occur.

switch for about 30 seconds.CAUTIONl It is possible to retract and extend the mir-
rors by hand. After retracting a mirror using
the mirror retractor switch, however, you should extend it by using the switch again,
not by hand. If you extended the mirror by
hand after retracting it using the switch, it would not properly lock in position. As a re-
sult, it could move because of the wind or
vibration while you are driving, taking away your rearward visibility.NOTEl Be careful not to get your hands trapped
while a mirror is moving.NOTEl If you move a mirror by hand or it moves af-
ter hitting a person or object, you may not beable to return it to its original position using
the mirror retractor switch. If this happens,
push the mirror retractor switch to place the mirror in its retracted position and then push
the switch again to return the mirror to its original position.
l When freezing has occurred and mirrors fail
to operate as intended, please refrain from repeated pushing of the retractor switch as
this action can result in burn-out of the mir- ror motor circuits.

“D” DRIVE
This position is used for most city and high-
way driving. The transmission will automati- cally change its gear depending on road and
driving conditions.
CAUTIONl To prevent transmission damage, never shift
into the “D” (DRIVE) position from the “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in
motion.Sport mode
E00603902681
Whether the vehicle is stationary or in mo-
tion, sports mode is selected by gently push-ing the selector lever from the “D” (DRIVE)
position into the manual gate (A).
To return to “D” range operation, gently push
the selector lever back into the main gate (B).
In sports mode, gear shifts can be made rap- idly simply by moving the selector leverbackward and forward. For vehicles equippedwith the shift paddles, shift paddles at the
steering wheel can also be used to perform
gearshift. In contrast to a manual transmis-
sion, the sports mode allows gear shifts with the accelerator pedal depressed.
NOTEl If your vehicle is equipped with shift pad-
dles, you can shift into sports mode with
shift paddles when the selector lever is in the main gate as well. Also, you can return to
the “D” range operation in any of following ways.
When returning to “D” range operation, the selector lever position display will change to
“D” (DRIVE) position.
• Pull the + (SHIFT UP) side shift paddle
forward (towards the driver) for over 2
seconds.
• Stop the vehicle.
• Push the selector lever from the “D”
(DRIVE) position into the manual gate
(A) and push the selector lever back into the main gate (B).
+ (SHIFT UP)
The transmission shifts up by one gear with
each operation.
- (SHIFT DOWN)
The transmission shifts down by one gear
with each operation.
CAUTIONl In sports mode, the driver must execute up-
ward shifts in accordance with prevailing road conditions, taking care to keep the en-
gine speed below the red zone.
l Repeated continuous operation of the selec-
tor lever or the shift paddles will continuous-ly switch shift position.
l For vehicles equipped with the shift paddles,
do not use the left- and right-hand shift pad- dles at the same time. Doing so could cause
a shift of gear ratio that you do not expect.NOTEl Only the 5 forward gears can be selected. To
reverse or park the vehicle, move the selec-
tor lever to the “R” (Reverse) or “P” (Park)
position as required.

measures. • Check the brake system and, if neces-
sary, have it serviced.
• Check the engine, transmission, trans-
fer, and differential oil or grease level and turbidity. If the oil or grease is
milky, it indicates water contamina-
tion. Replace it with new oil or grease.
• Grease the propeller shaft.
• Check the inside of the vehicle. If in-
gress of water is found, dry the carpetetc.

Tyres and wheels
Since the driving torque can be applied to the 4 wheels, the performance of the vehiclewhen operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly af-
fected by the condition of the tyres.
Pay close attention to the tyres.
l Install specified tyres on all wheels. Re-
fer to “Tyres and wheels” on page 11-15.
l Be sure to the appropriate tyre inflation
pressure according to no cargo or cargo.
Refer to “Tyre inflation pressures” on
page 10-12.
l Be sure to fit all 4 tyres and wheels of
the same size and type.
When replacement of any of the tyres or wheels is necessary, replace all of them.
l All tyres should be rotated whenever the
wear difference between the front and
rear tyres is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expec-
ted if there is a difference in wear between tyres. Refer to “Tyre rotation” on page 10-13.
l Check the tyre inflation pressure regular-
ly.
CAUTIONl Always use tyres of the same size, same
type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Using the tyres which dif-
fer in size, type, brands or the degree of wear or the inappropriate tyre inflation pres-
sure, will increase the differential oil tem- perature and may be impossible to shift the transfer, resulting in possible damage to the
driving system. Further, the drive train will be subjected to excessive loading, possibly
leading to oil leakage, component seizure, or
other serious faults.
Towing
If towing is necessary, we recommend you to
have it done by your MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service Point or a
commercial tow truck service.
In the following cases, transport the vehicle
using a tow truck.
l The engine runs but the vehicle does not
move or abnormal noise is produced.
l Inspection of the vehicle’s underside re-
veals that oil or some other fluid is leak- ing.
Cautions on handling of 4-wheel drive vehicles
6-52OKTE18E1Starting and driving6
Only when you cannot receive a towing serv-ice from a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point or commercial tow truck service, tow your vehicle carefully in accord-ance with the instructions given in “Towing”
on page 8-23.CAUTIONl Transport the vehicle with the driving
wheels on a carriage (Type C or D) as illus- trated.
Never try to tow with the front or rear
wheels on the ground (Type A or B) as illus-
trated.
This could result in damage to the drivetrain,
or unstable towing.
Jacking up a 4-wheel drive ve-
hicle
WARNINGl Do not crank the engine while jacking up
the vehicle.
The tyre on the ground may turn and the
vehicle may roll off the jack.Braking
E00607003065
All the parts of the brake system are critical
to safety. We recommend you to have the ve- hicle checked at regular intervals according
to the service booklet.
CAUTIONl Avoid driving habits that cause heavy brak-
ing and never “ride” the brakes by resting
your foot on the brake pedal while driving.
It causes brake overheating and fade.
Brake system
The service brake is divided into two brake
circuits. And your vehicle is equipped with
power brakes. If one brake circuit fails, the other is available to stop the vehicle. If you
should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes will still work. In these situations,
even if the brake pedal moves down to the very end of its possible stroke or resists being
depressed, keep depressing the brake pedal
down harder and further than usual; stop
driving as soon as possible and have the brake system repaired.
WARNINGl Do not turn off the engine while your ve-
hicle is in motion. If you turn off the engine while driving,
the power assistance for the braking sys-
tem will stop working and your brakes will not work effectively.
l If the power assist is lost or if either brake
hydraulic system stops working properly,
have your vehicle checked immediately.
Braking

Warning lamp
The brake warning lamp illuminates to indi-cate a fault in the braking system. Refer to
“Brake warning lamp” on page 5-15.
When brakes are wet
Check the brake system while driving at a
low speed immediately after starting, espe- cially when the brakes are wet, to confirmthey work normally.
A film of water can be formed on the brake
discs or brake drums and prevent normal braking after driving in heavy rain or through
large puddles, or after the vehicle is washed.
If this occurs, dry the brakes out by driving
slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal.
When driving downhill
It is important to take advantage of the en- gine braking by shifting to a lower shift posi-
tion while driving on steep downhill roads in
order to prevent the brakes from overheating.
WARNINGl Do not leave any objects near the brake
pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; do- ing so could prevent the full pedal stroke
that would be necessary in an emergency. Make sure that the pedal can be operated freely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.
Brake pads and linings
l Avoid hard braking situations.
New brakes need to be broken-in by
moderate use for the first 200 km (124 mph).
l The disc brakes are provided with a
warning device which emits a shrieking metallic sound while braking if the brake
pads have reached their wear limit. If you hear this sound, have the brake padsreplaced.
WARNINGl Driving with worn brake pads will make
it harder to stop, and can cause an acci-
dent.Hill start assist
E00628001396
The hill start assist makes it easy to start off on a steep uphill slope by preventing the ve-
hicle from moving backwards. It keeps the
braking force for approximately 2 seconds when you move your foot from the brake
pedal to the accelerator pedal.CAUTIONl Do not overly rely on the hill start assist to
prevent backwards movement of the vehicle. Under certain circumstances, even when hill
start assist is activated, the vehicle may
move backwards if the brake pedal is not sufficiently depressed, if the vehicle is heav-
ily loaded, if the road is very steep or slip- pery or if the vehicle tows a trailer, etc.
l The hill start assist is not designed to keep
the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopes for more than 2 seconds.
l When facing uphill, do not rely on using the
hill start assist to maintain a stopped position as an alternative to depressing the brake ped-
al.
Doing so could result in an accident.
l Do not turn the ignition switch to the
“LOCK” or “ACC” position or the operation
mode in ACC or OFF while the hill start as- sist is operating. The hill start assist couldstop operating, which could result in an acci-
dent.
