WARNINGlIf any of the check results are not normal,
the red lamp illuminates (for approxi- mately 5 seconds) and the buzzer sounds 3times. In this case, there is a possible fail-
ure in the system. Have the system inspec- ted by a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Au-
thorized Service Point immediately.
6. When the green lamp extinguishes, the
test mode is completed.
If the vehicle breaks down

If the vehicle breaks down on the road, moveit to the shoulder and use the hazard warning
flashers and/or the warning triangle etc.

If the engine stops/fails
Vehicle operation and control are affected if
the engine stops. Before moving the vehicle to a safe area, be aware of the following:
l The brake booster becomes inoperative
and the pedal effort will increase. Press
down the brake pedal harder than usual.
l Since the power steering system is no
longer operative, the steering wheel feels heavy when turning it.

If the operation mode cannot be changed to OFF, perform the following procedure. 1. Move the selector lever to the “P”
(PARK) position, and then change the operation mode to OFF. (For vehicles with A/T)

If the engine cannot be started because thebattery is weak or dead, the battery from an-other vehicle can be used with jumper cables to start the engine.
WARNINGl To start the engine using jumper cables
connected from another vehicle, perform
the correct procedures according to the instruction below. Incorrect procedures could result in a fire or explosion or dam-
age to the vehicles.
l Keep sparks, cigarettes and flames away
from the battery because the battery may produce an explosion.CAUTIONl Do not attempt to start the engine by pulling
or pushing the vehicle.
It could damage your vehicle.
l Check the other vehicle. It must have a 12-
volt battery.
If the other system isn’t 12-volt, shorting can
damage both vehicles.
l Use the proper cables suitable for the battery
size to prevent overheating of the cables.
l Check the jumper cables for damage and
corrosion before use.
l Always wear protective eye goggles when
working near the battery.
l Keep the battery out of the reach of children.

Get the vehicles close enough so the
jumper cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles aren’t touching each other.
2. Turn off all lamps, heater and other elec-
trical loads.

3.Set the parking brake firmly on each ve-
hicle. Put an automatic transmission in
“P” (PARK) or a manual transmission in
“N” (Neutral). Stop the engine.WARNINGl Turn off the ignition on both vehicles be-
forehand. Make sure that the cables or
your clothes cannot be caught by the fan or drive belt. Personal injury could result.
4. Make sure battery electrolyte is at the
proper level.
Refer to “Battery” on page 10-10.
WARNINGl If electrolyte fluid is not visible, or ap-
pears to be frozen, Do Not Attempt Jump
Starting!
A battery might rupture or explode if the temperature is below the freezing point orif it is not filled to the proper level.
l Electrolyte is corrosive diluted sulphuric
acid.
If electrolyte (battery acid) comes into
contact with your hands, eyes, clothes and the painted surface of your vehicle, it
should be thoroughly flushed with water. If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them with water immediately and thoroughly,
and get prompt medical attention.5. Connect one end of one jumper cable
to the positive (+) terminal of the dis-
charged battery (A), and the other end
to the positive (+) terminal of the
booster battery (B).
Connect one end of the other jumper ca-
ble
to the negative ( −) terminal of the
booster battery (B), and the other end
to the engine block of the vehicle with
the discharged battery at the point far- thest from the battery.
NOTEl Open the terminal cover before connecting
the jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal
of the battery.
(Refer to “Battery” on page 10-10.)WARNINGl Make sure that the connection is made
to the appointed position (shown in the il-
lustration). If the connection is made di-
rectly to the negative ( −) side of the bat-
tery, the inflammable gases generated
from the battery might catch fire and ex-
plode.
l When connecting the jumper cables, do
not connect the positive (+) cable to the
negative ( −) terminal. Otherwise sparks
might cause explosion of the battery.CAUTIONl Take care not to get the jumper cable caught
in the cooling fan or other rotating part in
the engine compartment.
6. Start the engine in the vehicle which has
the booster battery, let the engine idle a
few minutes, then start the engine in the vehicle with the discharged battery.
CAUTIONl Keep the engine of the vehicle giving assis-
tance running.

7. After the engine is started, disconnect
the cables in the reverse order and keep
the engine running for several minutes.
NOTEl If the vehicle is put in motion without fully
charging the battery, it might cause the loss
of the smooth engine operation and the anti- lock brake warning lamp to illuminate.

When the engine is overheating, “” will

If this occurs, take the following corrective measures: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place.
2. Check whether steam is coming from the
engine compartment.

compartment]
With the engine still running, raise the
bonnet to ventilate the engine compart-
ment.NOTEl For vehicles equipped with the Auto Stop &
Go (AS&G) system, press the “Auto Stop &Go (AS&G) OFF” switch to deactivate theAuto Stop & Go (AS&G) system before stopping the vehicle.

[If steam is coming from the engine
compartment]
Stop the engine, and when the steam
stops, raise the bonnet to ventilate the engine compartment. Restart the engine.
WARNINGl Do not open the bonnet while steam is
coming from the engine compartment. It
could cause steam or hot water to spurt out, causing burns. Hot water could spurt
out even when there is no steam coming out, and some parts will be very hot. Be
very careful when opening the bonnet.
l Be careful of hot steam, which could be
blowing off the reserve tank cap.WARNINGl Do not attempt to remove the radiator
cap while the engine is hot.
3. Confirm that the cooling fan (A) is turn-
ing.
[If the cooling fan is turning]
After the high coolant temperature warn- ing has gone off, stop the engine.
[If the cooling fan is not turning]

WARNINGl Be careful not to get your hands or clothes
caught in the cooling fan.4. Check the coolant level in the reserve
tank (B).
5. Add coolant to the radiator and/or re-
serve tank if necessary (refer to the
“Maintenance” section).
WARNINGl Make sure that the engine has cooled
down before removing the radiator cap (C), because hot steam or boiling water
otherwise will gush from the filler port and may scald you.CAUTIONl Do not add coolant while the engine is hot.
Suddenly adding cold coolant could damage the engine. Wait for the engine to cool
down, then add coolant a little at a time.6. Examine the radiator hoses for coolant
leakage and the drive belt for looseness
or damage.

ing system or drive belt, we recommend

as described below if the fuel supply is ex- hausted during travel.
Pump the hand pump (A) at the top of the fuel filter until the hand pump becomes stiff.Then try again to start the engine.

Before changing a tyre, first stop your vehi- cle in a safe, flat location. 1. Park the vehicle on level and stable
ground, free of loose pebbles, etc.
2. Set the parking brake firmly.
3. On vehicles with manual transmission,
turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK”
position or put the operation mode in
OFF, and move the gearshift lever to the
“R” (Reverse) position.
On vehicles with automatic transmis- sion, move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and turn the ignitionswitch to the “LOCK” position or put
the operation mode in OFF.
4. Turn on the hazard warning flashers and
set up a warning triangle, flashing signal
lamp, etc., at an adequate distance from
the vehicle, and have all your passengers
leave the vehicle.
5. To prevent the vehicle from rolling
when jacking up the vehicle, placechocks or blocks (A) at the tyre that is
diagonally opposite from the tyre (B)
you are changing.WARNINGl Be sure to apply chocks or blocks to the
correct tyre when jacking up the vehicle.If the vehicle moves while jacked up, the
jack could slip out of position, leading to
an accident.NOTEl The chocks shown in the illustration do not
come with your vehicle. It is recommended
that you keep one in the vehicle for use if needed.
l If chocks are not available, use stones or any
other objects that are large enough to hold the wheel in position.
6. Get the jack, jack handle and wheel nut
wrench ready.

Spare wheel information

The spare wheel is stored under the floor of
the cargo bed.
Check the air pressure of the spare tyre fre-
quently and make sure it is ready for emer- gency use at any time.
Maintaining the spare wheel at the highest
specified air pressure will ensure that it can always be used under any conditions (city/ high-speed driving, varying load weight,
etc.).
CAUTIONl The pressure should be periodically checked
and maintained at the specified pressure while the tyre is stowed.
Driving with an insufficient tyre pressure
can lead to an accident. If you have no choice but to drive with an insufficient tyre
pressure, keep your speed down and inflate the tyre to the correct pressure as soon as
possible. (Refer to “Tyre inflation pressures”

1. Loosen the wheel nuts a quarter turn
with the wheel nut wrench. Do not re- move the wheel nuts yet.
2. Place the jack under one of the jacking
points shown in the illustration. Use the jacking point closest to the tyre you wish
to change.
A- Front jacking point

WARNINGl Set the jack only at the positions shown
here. If the jack is set at a wrong position, it could dent your vehicle or the jack
might fall over and cause personal injury.
l Do not use the jack on a tilted or soft sur-
face. Otherwise, the jack might slip and cause personal injury. Always use the jack on a flat, hard surface. Before setting
the jack, make sure there are no sand or pebbles under the jack base.NOTEl When jacking up the rear of the vehicle, turn
the tip of the jack so that the grooved portion
(C) properly meets the designated point.
3. Using the jack handle, turn the release
valve (D) clockwise until it stops.

4.Insert the jack handle in the bracket of
the jack and hook the notch (E) on the
jack handle end to the claw (F) of the
bracket.
5. Move the jack handle up and down to
raise the ram until just before the jack
contacts the jacking point of the vehicle.
Ensure that the jack will properly con- tact the vehicle jacking point.
Move the jack handle up and down to raise the vehicle.NOTEl This jack is a 2 stage expansion type.WARNINGlStop jacking up the vehicle as soon as the
tyre is raised off the ground. It is danger-
ous to raise the vehicle any higher.WARNINGl Do not get under your vehicle while using
the jack.
l Do not bump the raised vehicle or leave it
sitting on the jack for a long time. Both
are very dangerous.
l Do not use a jack except the one that
came with your vehicle.
l The jack should not be used for any pur-
pose other than to change a tyre.
l No one should be in your vehicle when us-
ing the jack.
l Do not start or run the engine while your
vehicle is on the jack.
l Do not turn the raised wheel. The tyres
still on the ground could turn and make your vehicle fall off the jack.
6. Remove the wheel nuts with the wheel
nut wrench, then take the wheel off.
CAUTIONl Handle the wheel carefully when changing
the tyre, to avoid scratching the wheel sur- face.
7. Clean out any mud, etc. on the hub sur-
face (G), hub bolts (H) or in the installa- tion holes (I) in the wheel, and then
mount the spare wheel.
WARNINGl Mount the spare wheel with the valve
stem (J) facing outboard. If you cannot see the valve stem (J), you have installed the wheel backwards.

wheel installed backwards can cause vehi-
cle damage and result in an accident.

8.Turn the wheel nuts clockwise by hand
to initially tighten them.
[Type 1: On vehicles with steel wheels]
Temporarily tighten the wheel nuts by hand until the tapered parts of the wheel nuts make light contact with the seats of the wheel holes and the wheel is not
loose.
[Type 2: On vehicles with aluminium wheels]
Temporarily tighten the wheel nuts by
hand until the flange parts of the wheel nuts make light contact with the wheel
and the wheel is not loose.NOTEl Flange nuts can be temporarily used on the
steel spare wheel as shown in the illustra- tion, but return to the original wheel and tyre
as soon as possible.CAUTIONl Never apply oil to either the wheel bolts or
the nuts, or they will tighten too much.NOTEl If all 4 aluminium wheels are changed to
steel wheels. e. g. when fitting winter tyres,
use tapered nuts.
9. Put the notch (K) provided on the jack
handle end on the valve (L) of the jack.
Using the jack handle, turn the release valve anticlockwise slowly to lower thevehicle until the tyre touches the ground.
WARNINGl Be sure to open the release valve slowly. If
it is opened quickly, the vehicle will drop
abruptly and the jack may come out of
position, causing a serious accident.
10. Tighten the nuts crisscross in 2 or 3
steps until each nut has been tightened securely.
