However, you can add to the future perfor- mance and economy of your vehicle by observing the follow
ing precautions during
the first 300 miles (500 km).Drive your vehicle at moderate speeds during the break-in period.  Avoid revving the engine.  Avoid rough driving such as sudden starts, sudden acceleration, prolonged high- speed driving and sudden braking. These actions would have a detrimental effect onthe engine and lead to increased fuel andoil consumption; this could ultimately result in the malfunction of engine com- ponents. Be particularly careful to avoidfull acceleration while in low shift posi- tion (low gears).  Do not overload the vehicle. Stay within the seating capacity. Refer to “Cargo load precautions” on page 6-10. Refrain from towing a trailer or other vehicle. Refer to “Trailer towing” on page 6-11.

2. While depressing the brake pedal, press the accelerator pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after theengine starts. 3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline.While depressing the brake pedal, push the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then crank the engine for5 to 6 seconds. Return the ignition switchto the “OFF” and release the accelerator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds whiledepressing the brake pedal, but do not push the accelerator pedal. Release the ignition switch if the engine starts. If theengine fails to start, repeat these proce- dures. If the engine st

When the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible tostart from a standstill even with the selector
lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE) position. This occurs because the transaxle has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate aproblem. If this occurs, place the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position and let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes.The transaxle will warm up, and you will be able to start normally. If driving through water is unavoidable, use the following procedure: Check the depth of the water and the terrain before attempting to drive through it. Drive

After operating the vehicle in rough road con- ditions, be sure to perform the following inspection and maintenance procedures:  Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc.
 Carefully wash the vehicle with water. Drive the vehicle slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal in order to dry out the brakes. If the brakes still do notfunction properly, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice as soon as possible tohave the brakes checked.  Remove the insects, dried grass, etc. clog- ging the radiator core. After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle and differential oil. If the oil or grease is milky or cloudy because of water contamination, it mustbe replaced with new oil.  Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found, dry the carpet etc. Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing, have it drained at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice.

vehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires. Pay close attention to the tires. Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” on page 11-7. Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type. When it is necessary to replace any of thetires or wheels, replace all four. All tires should be rotated before the wear difference between the front and rear tires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-17.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.

Overuse of the brake can cause weakening, resulting in poor brake response and prema- ture wear of the brake pads.When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by downshifting.
CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, type, and brand that have no wear differences. Using tires of different size, type, brands or degree of wear, will increase the differential oil tem- perature and result in possible damage to thedriving system. For a safer and more enjoyable trip, always check for the following:  Before starting the vehicle, make certain that you and all passengers are seated and wearing their seat belts properly (with children in the rear seat, in appropriaterestraints), and that all the doors and the liftgate are locked.  Move the driver’s seat as far backward as possible, while keeping good visibility, and good control of the steering wheel, brakes, accelerator, and controls. Checkthe instrument panel indicators and multi- information display for any possible prob- lem. Similarly, the front passenger seat should also be moved as far back as possible.  Make sure that infants and small children are properly restrained in accordance with all laws and regulations.
Check these by selecting the defroster mode, and set the blower switch on high. You shouldbe able to feel the air blowing against the windshield. Refer to “Defrosting or defogging (wind-shield, door windows)” on page 7-13, 7-22. Check all the tires for heavy tread wear or uneven wear patterns. Look for stones, nails,glass, or other objects stuck in the tread. Look for any tread cuts or sidewall cracks. Check the wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires(including spare tire) for proper pressure. Replace your tires before they are heavily worn out.As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, there is a risk of damage to the tire inflation pressure sensorswhen the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, only, be performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Have someone watch while you turn all the exterior lights on and off. Also check the turn
signal indicators and high-beam indicators on the instrument panel. Check the ground under the vehicle after parking overnight, for fuel, water, oil, or other leaks. Make sure all the fluid levels are correct. Also, if you can smell fuel, you needto find out why immediately and have itfixed.
